Graffiti photos, anyone?
« on: November 18, 2013, 03:26:58 PM »
Let's see yours! Color or B&W, gear details or no, whatever you like. Here's a few of mine for starters.

FED-2, FED 50/3.5, Kentmere 100:

FED-2, I-26M, Tri-X:

Canon P, Canon 50/1.5, Kentmere 100:

Here are few old ones, first is, I think, an Olympus om2 taken in Portobello Road, don't know who the lady is, or even if that is actually Graffiti or meant to be there. The other two are a Lomo LCA, Leamington Spa, 2003.

Some nice examples here.  But many many tags all over the world imho are extremely boring, not to say brainless, always the same and screw up everything. Here's one of these brainless tags, in my town you can find it everywhere. This is one of the very few places where it makes sense. The house near the main staition is abandoned and waiting to be exploited by real estate gamblers.

Some good photography on this thread and some interesting shots.  However, whilst some of the "graffiti" might be witty / amusing and some of it is vaguely artistic, am I the only one that regards it as "criminal damage"?

Maybe I'm just an old fuddy-duddy but I would cheerfully prosecute any would-be "Wanksy" (or whatever his name is) and have them lick the wall clean if they did that on the side of my house.

Hey, I'm with you, though my solution to personal property damage would be more likely to involve blunt force trauma (I'm not terribly creative...). But when it's out in the wild it can make for interesting photographs, and it seems to be an accepted part of the urban landscape.

It seems an appropriate time to post this one:

Not that I agree with the sentiment. Except when I do.  :P

It certainly is technically 'criminal damage', and for the tools who just want to paint the same old cliched tags for their own sake, then I'm a fellow fuddy-duddy. These are people who don't even have the creativity to rebel in a new and interesting way! They're not doing anything new, and they are even copying the tags poorly. I'd have no problem sentencing them to a lashing or two.

Sometimes, though, I really think that grafitti is fascinating and can really push the boundaries of what is considered 'art' and make us think of the role of public art. Sometimes there are artists who are not only skillful with the painting itself, but are also mindful of context and medium, and that can be thought-provoking.

Of course, if someone were to provoke thought it this way on the side of MY house, there would also be some lawsuit provoking happening on my end ;)

Agreed. In fact, I was almost wanting to join in and paint something colourful on the Cadillacs buried in the dirt at the Cadillac Ranch on Route 66 when we were there last month. The owner has agreed to people going and creating their "art" and that's much to be admired.  I've also seen walls / gable ends where the owners have sanctioned the local "yoofs" to paint to their hearts' content.  Great; but not where it's done without the express permission of the building owner.
