just a reminder that World Pinhole Day is this month
April 29
http://www.pinholeday.org/ (http://www.pinholeday.org/)
-
I can't forget, I'm organizing a free workshop/shooting event in New York City:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/eventDetails.jsp/id/1221 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/eventDetails.jsp/id/1221)
So far we have 89 people signed up & I'm expecting it to be a fun day. We're having Tom Persinger from F295 coming in to join us, and it's sponsored by Ilford. They'll have some 4x5 Harman Titan Pinholes there and we're hoping that maybe the 8x10 will make an appearance (keep your fingers and toes crossed!)
There is still room for more pinholers, so please click on the link to reserve a spot for yourself & join us!
Cheers!
-
Just bumping this up as a reminder since pinhole day is rapidly approaching!
I'll be out with my Harman Titan and some converted Altoids tins.
Can't wait.
How about you???
-
As the weather looks pants for Sunday, I've got a back up plan.
Looking forward to taking part.
-
waether seems dull here for the day. that'll give long nice exposures ;D
-
Count me in. Last year I presented a 6x18ish image that I had taken with a 6x12 camera... an accidental partial double exposure but I liked it.
-
I have a roll of Pan F and a pinhole cap for my Arax 88 ... Now, I just need to find the time :)
-
I'm going to be at London Hackspace taking pinhole photos and probably trying to turn our accidental camera obscura in the darkroom into a giant pinhole camera with a 25mm/1inch hole in the wall (we can watch the trains go by upside down on the wall ;D)
Might document/video bits to submit to a future FW video podcast?
I finally finished building the pinhole camera I started making about 5 years ago too and ran a test roll through it last week. Hopefully have fixed the broken parts of it and have to finish up the next test roll today to dev and check.
-
Heather, I'd love to see your creation!
:)
It would be cool to see a video of the train running upside down in your accidental camera obscura too! :)
-
Might document/video bits to submit to a future FW video podcast?
that would be superb - thanks Heather.
-
Becky...
I'm gonna drop a shot methinks...
Time to dust off the Goose...
Thanks for the heads up...

There are still a few spots in our FREE event at the B&H EVent Space here in New York (see the link above). Ilford will be here with the Harman Titan Pinhole, and may give out some film samples, and Tom Persinger from f295 will be leading the class and the photo walk. Sign up!
-
Damn. Need time to build one. Got hold of some 9x12 cm film holders but I think I just take a 6x9 back for a mamiya press and improvise something.
I got all these wonderful ideas but as much ability to realize them as a drunk snail.
-
It would be cool to see a video of the train running upside down in your accidental camera obscura too! :)
I've tried repeatedly to video it but there's just not enough light for the camera (and it's a f1.8 d-cam, too). I can just about do long enough exposures to capture the image circle
http://www.flickr.com/photos/fishies_go_pook/6838881596/# (http://www.flickr.com/photos/fishies_go_pook/6838881596/#) (link cuz it's crummy d-word)
Have spent forever calculating the correct exposure for it... hopefully should only be 20-ish seconds for a paper negative.
Apparently the "ideal" size for the depth of the room is 2mm but that'd make the exposure time nearly a whole hour (!)
-
Looks like the weather may be nice this year - complete opposite to the storm for last year's WWPD!
-
Looks pretty bad for us...
-
Looks like it's going to be lovely here :-) Shall take out my DIY pinhole for the day!
-
It's supposed to pouring it down all day in the Broxbourne area. Was going to go out on the bike.....might take some pinhole still lifes instead.
-
One terrible mess later I got myself a 6x9 pinhole. Or well. a strange contraption in front of a mamiya press standard. Hopefully it'll work without to much fuss. No shutter or lens cap. Gonna go for the finger and darkslide rutine.
-
Just posting a couple of D-I-Y pinhole sites.
You can build a camera Saturday and then shoot it Sunday on pinhole day.

Have fun everyone!

Got my 4X5 ready and holders loaded with paper. Looks like partly cloudy here which is good, helps cut down on the extreme contrast of paper. This is exciting and will be my first World Pinhole Day entry.
-
Too dark to do the darkroom pinhole camera. Have figured out the metering for today would be in the range of 8+ minutes when I was figuring on 21-30seconds the other day (It's a *really* dark day here in London today). Will try to take some pictures of shells and stuff at home and save the pinhole darkroom camera for a brighter day (also a day where I'll have more help on hand).
-
give it some time Heather - the sun has just come out here after 3 days of constant rain. It should be with you soon as it's clearing from the south.
I'm loading my DDSs as I type (well, straight after anyway) and heading out!
-
the sun has just come out here after 3 days of constant rain. It should be with you soon as it's clearing from the south.
It's still chucking it down in Broxbourne! Just finishing developing my Mexican film and will then take some still lifes with my Holga pinhole.
-
HAd to come inside. Sun too hot today [if you stay out of the wind ] :-)
Shot two rolls of GP3 this morning. Developed and drying now!
-
It's still chucking it down in Broxbourne!
It's a small world, I was born in Broxbourne lived there till I was 7, happy days ;D
The weather's been terrible here, gale force winds all day, so had an idea for some inside shots, film is currently drying, hope to scan some in later.
-
My pinhole image has been submitted!! Had to get up pretty early to get the right image..Using my "king Leo" pinhole camera..and here is the image I submitted...
-
I've got my shots! tried the camera from sandeha with a red filter on. I'll see if I can get it at least developed today :)
-
I'm honoured, indeed.
The flood in the streets has abated but the winds are still high and cloud cover continuous. Bloody Wales. I'm having a beer instead.
-
I abandoned my original idea. Did a meter reading this morning and it would have been 15 minutes exposure at least and I didn't feel like standing in the rain trying to stop the camera blowing away for that long. So I shot my desk instead. 1 hour exposure on Fomapan 100. 15 minutes in RO9 1+50.
-
Love this Peter! what camera is that on your desk?
-
It's a Canon EE17 half frame. It has several problems and may not work again. I have two more so was hoping to make at least one good one from them.
-
Ha, Peter - while you were posting I've done almost the same, my own workspace. The beer was the stimulus ... drying now.
-
Peter R -lovely shot...and your desk is much much tidier than mine!
Matt Davis - it is a small world! I've been here almost 4 years & love it.
Trying to balance, developing & scanning holiday shots, taking some still lifes and getting the dinner ready before Mrs B gets back from her soap making course. :-[ She ain't going to be pleased!
-
we've had lovely cloudy and blue skies since about 2:30. I took a trip down to the Romney Marsh ... my negs are drying now, they are looking great so far. Cant wait to scan them.
-
Just home from our Pinhole Day event at B&H in NYC. We had 114 people signed up for it but only 41 people showed up. The ones who didn't show really missed out. We had Tom Persinger from f295 do a class before we went out to shoot, and a rep from Ilford was there with the Harman Titan Pinhole (one thing he mentioned, that I don't know if you all know about is, they are going to be coming out with interchangeable cones for it soon, which will allow you to change the focal length), and he handed out sample film. Gary Moyer was also there as a participant, and was also really helpful to those using the Holga pinhole. After the class we went out to Bryant Park. We had a bunch of pinhole cameras in use, including Leonardo loaded with Fujiroid that anyone could take turns using. And participants will be able to upload their results to our Flickr group to be eligible to win a $50 gift card.
All in all, a fun day!
-
Gosh, sounds like you had it sorted out over the water.
Here, it was wonderful weather 8) sun all day. Shot a couple of rolls of GP3 and posted my WWPD snap here[ http://www.pinholeday.org/gallery/2012/index.php?id=510 (http://www.pinholeday.org/gallery/2012/index.php?id=510) ] .Apparently it will show at some time.
Still, have another on my blog here http://boxesbellows.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/good-marriage.html (http://boxesbellows.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/good-marriage.html)
-
sounds like everyone had a great day of pinhole!
Mine was done with a converted Holga and some expired Kodak Supra 100 souped in colorwater.
-
My initial offering - taken using a Holga 120 mod, Ilford PanF and developed in LC29 (about 3 mins exposure)

About as dull as the weather outside, and way underexposed ... :-\

-
Probably because my morning rehearsal was cancelled, I found some time this evening to make a pinhole photo. I sent this off to WWPD. The hardest part was holding still for the ninety-second exposure.
Tri-x, Rodinal and a Graphic monorail view camera with a 6x9cm roll film back and a Pinhole Resource micro-drilled pinhole sheet taped to a lens board. Another piece of gaffer's tape served as the shutter.
-
dang! some nice shots from you all. specially liking andreas and dianes~
double dang! my shots turned out all underexposed. miscalculated film/sun/filter :P I'll be sure to put up something though~
but I had fun visiting a group of people that had a pinhole workshop and I was really taken with this shot:
he used a tin can and I dunno if those are reflections or extra pinholes through the lid of the thing? too cool though~
I'm glad he uploaded it :) here's the link to it on pinholeday.com http://www.pinholeday.org/gallery/2012/index.php?id=421&Country=Sweden (http://www.pinholeday.org/gallery/2012/index.php?id=421&Country=Sweden)

Here's one off my roll shot on WWPD. This year I used a Holga 120WPC, since last year's device (a Century Graphic) is now in someone else's hands. Surprisingly enough, I got 6 usable shots off it, and the only light leak was through the one place it was supposed to leak!
Civic Square, Wellington, NZ.
(http://i.minus.com/j39NrONwcmoaI.jpg) (http://minus.com/l39NrONwcmoaI)
Exposure was arounf 15 seconds, film Fomapan 100 developed in PC-TEA 1+50.

Fabulous set Leon! Unfortunately I was cooped up in a meeting at a village hall all day yesterday (you know where Leon...) but did manage to get out about 7pm when the sun eventually came out, I now have to wait until I get the film back and scan them.

Wow, some really great stuff here. And Leon, those are gorgeous! Are those with the Harman Titan Pinhole?

Love it!
I think it's my fav of all that you've ever done! :)

Fantastic shots :)
Here's one from my P-Sharan pinhole.

awesome shots leon! Lots of pinhole lovers on this forum.
I have a question. I took my little plastic toy pinhole out and never got the fill capturing medium expososed and there was very hard vignetting around the edges. To the point where you could just see the circle with an image inside of it.
Is my hole too small? too big? I dont have any needles that i would know their exact diameter so i ended up just poking the smallest hole i could in my foil. When looking through the camera with the shutter open you can see light coming through the hole, but maybe its just too small? I still want nice sharp (for a pinhole at least) pinhole images though.
I'll post up some examples if asked tonight.
-
Leon, Those are gorgeous!!!!
Didn't have a ton of time so I went the instant route and took a quick walk and did a few with the pinholga.
Not really thriller with either of these, but hey I got into the pinhole spirit :)

Unlikely to be to do with the size of the pinhole. It's more likely something between the pinhole and the film. Putting up a shot inside the back of the camera might help. Or it could be something in front of the camera. Do you have a hood fitted to it?
-
Are you sure you didn't accidentally leave the lens on there Leon :P - they are wonderfully "crisp" for pinholes - gorgeous.
Now, I'm going to resist the temptation to buy a Titan, and get round to affixing one of my pinholes to the front of the MPP. Except I could be tempted by a Titan in a format larger than 4x5, 'cos I don't have anything capable of shooting larger than 4x5. Yes. I think that justification could work ;D
-
Paul - this is a common phenomenon with the Titan. We've been having a bit of a discussion about it on the Flickr titan group.
The negs seem to be really sharp in web display. I can assure you that they are not so sharp in real-life, and are obviously pinhole-esque. I have no idea why they always look so sharp online - I only apply the same amount of sharpening as I do for my lens-based 5x4 scans. I wonder if it's about how little they are enlarged for screen viewing? maybe? I don't really understand all that technical stuff. All I can say is that a print from my lens 5x4 negs is ubersharp and clear, whereas the same size print from a harman titan neg is very soft and diffuse - nicely though, yet they look very similar in web display.
I think people are starting to think we are all over sharpening them, but we're not :-\
-
Flickr has a tendancy to sharpen the crap out of your images. It has to do with the type of algorithm that flickr uses to scale down your images. Ive actually seen the sharpening effects of flicker widen my DOF on images by a considerable amount.

-
Peter, im not using a hood or anything like that. I do notice that the shutter does protrude out around the lens a bit. Could it be that i was underexposing? I'll post up an image tonight when i get home.
Leon if you want me to make a new thread so im not clogging up this one let me know.
-
I know the pinhole size does have a lot to do with sharpness. While a lens in focus will make an infinitely small point of light on the film, the pinhole projects a series of pinhole sized dots on the surface. Since there is no optics, there can me no reduction or enlargement.
I just did a calculation and the pinhole on the Titan is actually on the small side. For the 72mm cone, the calculations say it would need to be 0.378mm wide. But they went for a 0.35mm wide hole instead, something that would have been adequate for a 61mm cone (the smaller the cone, the smaller the hole). That's probably a big part of how sharp it really looks.
-
You could always hand hold the Titan (a bit like Magnus' boat), this would achieve a softer look ;)
-
I just did a calculation and the pinhole on the Titan is actually on the small side.
In practice, I'm not sure how much difference is makes. I use a .4mm and can change the focal length from 75mm to 150mm on my camera but I don't see any real difference in sharpness whatever focal length I use. Might be more noticeable with smaller negs that need more enlargement but with 5x4 I don't think it's so critical.
-
Enlargement does play a huge role in it. I don't think pinhole negatives are "really" made for enlarging. It just all comes down to the human eye and the number of DPI we can see and so on...
-
Damn Leon, can you take a bad picture?..lol Had a great time with the B&H crew and Tom P. Here is a quick shot I took on the way to Bryant Park
-
Cool shot Gary!
What camera did you use...was that homemade?
:)
-
Thanks Beck, thats the Holga 120 WPC shot with the 6x12 mask
-
photos just keep on rolling in here, fun! :)
here's mine, shot with the superwide pinhole camera a la lynch(!)
it's a cat- and selfportrait double~
-
that's cool, like the Cheshire cat almost! ;D
-
I took the tin can pinhole that Diane gave me and put it on the front bumper of my car and shot the row of houses across the street. Weird white smear there near the top--I guess it's from the reflection of the sun in that window.
-
cool shot terry! I like the angle~
-
Thanks Jonas. It was a 4x5 sheet in a Pirouline tin, so the neg was curved and that distorted the shape of the image. I like it too. (Thanks Diane!)
-
Your welcome Terry! I love this..distortion is my favorite part of pinhole!
-
Just scanned in the shots from last Sunday.
Stayed inside it was way to wet & windy to go out.
First one is me doing the washing up.
Then us both having lunch.
Thats all I could come up with in the end.
Zero 2000, FP4 @ 50 ISO
Dev'd in Kodak D76.
-
Here's a couple of pinholes taken last Sunday on WWPHD. The day was so crappy weatherwise that I didn't think I get any. Both were taken about half a mile from where I live.
Zero 2000 and both on Ektar... decided the first one looked better in B&W

I like the B&W too Paul!
Everyone really made some nice pinholes! Very good day!!!
Diane does make good pinholes! I also have one of her little tin box pinholes and it's a sweetie!
:)

I finally developed my WPD images. Fuji Reala 100, Holga WPC (modified by me) and Rollei Digibase C-41 kit:
