I have a question. I took my little plastic toy pinhole out and never got the fill capturing medium expososed and there was very hard vignetting around the edges. To the point where you could just see the circle with an image inside of it.

Is my hole too small? too big? I dont have any needles that i would know their exact diameter so i ended up just poking the smallest hole i could in my foil. When looking through the camera with the shutter open you can see light coming through the hole, but maybe its just too small? I still want nice sharp (for a pinhole at least) pinhole images though.

I'll post up some examples if asked tonight.

Didn't have a ton of time so I went the instant route and took a quick walk and did a few with the pinholga.

Not really thriller with either of these, but hey I got into the pinhole spirit

Unlikely to be to do with the size of the pinhole. It's more likely something between the pinhole and the film. Putting up a shot inside the back of the camera might help. Or it could be something in front of the camera. Do you have a hood fitted to it?

- they are wonderfully "crisp" for pinholes - gorgeous.

Now, I'm going to resist the temptation to buy a Titan, and get round to affixing one of my pinholes to the front of the MPP. Except I could be tempted by a Titan in a format larger than 4x5, 'cos I don't have anything capable of shooting larger than 4x5. Yes. I think that justification could work

Paul - this is a common phenomenon with the Titan. We've been having a bit of a discussion about it on the Flickr titan group.

The negs seem to be really sharp in web display. I can assure you that they are not so sharp in real-life, and are obviously pinhole-esque. I have no idea why they always look so sharp online - I only apply the same amount of sharpening as I do for my lens-based 5x4 scans. I wonder if it's about how little they are enlarged for screen viewing? maybe? I don't really understand all that technical stuff. All I can say is that a print from my lens 5x4 negs is ubersharp and clear, whereas the same size print from a harman titan neg is very soft and diffuse - nicely though, yet they look very similar in web display.

I think people are starting to think we are all over sharpening them, but we're not $:-\$

Flickr has a tendancy to sharpen the crap out of your images. It has to do with the type of algorithm that flickr uses to scale down your images. Ive actually seen the sharpening effects of flicker widen my DOF on images by a considerable amount.

Peter, im not using a hood or anything like that. I do notice that the shutter does protrude out around the lens a bit. Could it be that i was underexposing? I'll post up an image tonight when i get home.

I know the pinhole size does have a lot to do with sharpness. While a lens in focus will make an infinitely small point of light on the film, the pinhole projects a series of pinhole sized dots on the surface. Since there is no optics, there can me no reduction or enlargement.

I just did a calculation and the pinhole on the Titan is actually on the small side. For the 72mm cone, the calculations say it would need to be 0.378mm wide. But they went for a 0.35mm wide hole instead, something that would have been adequate for a 61mm cone (the smaller the cone, the smaller the hole). That's probably a big part of how sharp it really looks.

In practice, I'm not sure how much difference is makes. I use a .4mm and can change the focal length from 75mm to 150mm on my camera but I don't see any real difference in sharpness whatever focal length I use. Might be more noticeable with smaller negs that need more enlargement but with 5x4 I don't think it's so critical.

Enlargement does play a huge role in it. I don't think pinhole negatives are "really" made for enlarging. It just all comes down to the human eye and the number of DPI we can see and so on...

I took the tin can pinhole that Diane gave me and put it on the front bumper of my car and shot the row of houses across the street. Weird white smear there near the top--I guess it's from the reflection of the sun in that window.

Thanks Jonas. It was a 4x5 sheet in a Pirouline tin, so the neg was curved and that distorted the shape of the image. I like it too. (Thanks Diane!)

Just scanned in the shots from last Sunday.
Stayed inside it was way to wet & windy to go out.

First one is me doing the washing up.
Then us both having lunch.
Thats all I could come up with in the end.

Here's a couple of pinholes taken last Sunday on WWPHD. The day was so crappy weatherwise that I didn't think I get any. Both were taken about half a mile from where I live.

Zero 2000 and both on Ektar... decided the first one looked better in B&W
