You basically just need a good connection.
One thing that's possible is to stream just the audio. That way you get more out of the available bandwidth.
I did a video conference with Skype last Friday and apart from the video stalling like crazy, the audio was not that bad.

That is 100% prerecorded (separately) and multitracked. The reason that the sound sucks is because they're all recording on their cellphones.

Ok, that was INCREDIBLE. I honestly don't understand how they synced 50 players like that (although I do have a slight suspicion that they added some sort of backing track starting at 2:25, because everything amps up incredibly at that point [and where's the snare drummer playing nice solid hits? the guy in the top left corner is still playing pianissimo]). Joan Jett sounded horrible and there were only 4 of them

Agreed. Incredible. MVP goes to the first timpani player for best moves. In other music news, I recently pre-orderd the upcoming Nick Lowe EP. Plus, I got my new audio interface for my computer and am going to start making music again. Even tuned my guitar and bass.

Right now I'm learning KiCad because I want to build my own fuzz pedal. Once I know the software, I can pretty much design anything that I want.

I'm starting with the Bazz Fuss circuit as it's pretty simple. Then I'll go from there.

It's weird ... I'm a techie and can write PHP and Javascript, but musical effect programming has eluded me. I tried the Line6 developer model, and gave up and sold it after like 5 minutes

I've watched people program MaxMSP and I can't figure it out

Maybe now is the time to try to dive in again? $:-\$

Check in the open source world, you might find something you like.
I know LMMS is pretty darn powerful. It supports VST's and a bunch of stuff.

But on the DIY effects front, I tried with a breadboard and stuff I have at home and somehow managed only to produce a pretty glorious sound of silence...
I'll have to work some more on that fuzz... Right now I'm just substituting various parts I scavenged and crossing my fingers that it works and not start a small fire

I can also work with electronics, no problem. I can breadboard up an effects pedal and solder it all together. I've completely rewired guitars, basses, etc. Funny thing, though, is that I have never worked with brass, which is my main instrument. Still take it to the shop for even the most minor repairs

While you're here, I thought I'd share this. It's a first time out using a phone to record my playing, after some 30 months with the four-string thing, attempting to channel Ric Grech's bass lines in Willie Dixon's Young Fashioned Ways, as played on 'Muddy Waters: The London Sessions' from so, so long ago. I saw Grech a couple of times with Traffic during his all too short career. But then it moves to something I heard on an Anderton's Music promo video which came across as a very cool segment to stitch onto the first part.

The bass is a medium-scale Chowny through a Blackstar U60. It's a bit weird how the act of recording affects the playing. I'm usually smoother on this - I need to be more patient but I'm happy enough to get here after two years+ of playing.

Full disclosure: I worked for this company for a couple of years. They have quite questionable personnel and business practices (case in point: I told them my mother had cancer so I'd have to miss a few days of work to be with her at the hospital, and they fired me. it was the week before Christmas). They frequently get accused of upsampling their products, which may be more negligence than actual malice, but given their other practices one can't really tell.

I sometimes think I'm completely out of touch with the current music scene and finding someone like Tori Handsley who has been around for a while, but I'd never previously heard of, just confirms that.

Her new (and maybe only) album was released a few days ago and is described on Bandcamp as "An innovative release from U.K. artist, producer and curator Tori Handsley takes a punk approach to jazz."

I'm definitely out of touch with the current music scene but this time of the year I break out the Christmas albums. I'm always looking for interesting ones like the Motown Christmas albums I got last year and the James Brown album I got a few years ago with the classic "Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto". I just found out Twisted Sister did a Christmas album, I was ready to pull the trigger on that one but my wife knocked some sense into me. This is my find for this year which is actually a fairly current album having been released in 2015.
