I personally am quite fond of the Toronto cover band Cybertronic Spree.

Another Neil Young classic, I might have mentioned before, but it deserves the attention... The Dave Matthews Band & Warren Haynes live rendition of Cortez the Killer is an absolute monster.

Joss Stone. Never been a great fan of either her or the song but enjoyed it anyway. The one time I really enjoyed Joss Stone was her rendition of People Get Ready at Ronnie Scott's with Jeff Beck but that might have something to do with the band - Jeff Beck, Tal Wilkenfeld, Vinnie Colaiuta and Jason Rebello. Great line up.

I’m not recommending music here unless you have children. My wife recently heard this song, Three Little Fishes, and had a flashback to her childhood. She had a plastic child’s record player and these Red Raven magic mirror movie records. She tells me she wants them for her birthday, she was dead serious, so I set out looking for them. I found a stack of the records with the mirror carousel on eBay so I ordered it. Of course, the song she wanted was not in that stack and I couldn’t find it. Eventually, almost 2 months after her birthday, the only copy I could find was on Discogs, the seller wanted a lot for it. I guess this is a rare one. I could easily get it on a regular record but not the magic mirror record with the little movie printed on the label. Of course I broke down and got it.

Once I had the records and the mirror carousel I discovered that the carousel doesn’t fit on my RCA Victor phonograph. It has the tall post for stacking multiple records, the carousel needs a short post. These records are 78 rpm so a lot of modern record players won’t work. Luckily I found an old plastic Mercury phonograph that plays 33, 45 and 78 rpm. It was only $15 and it’s in mint condition.

I just uploaded a video of it. Unfortunately YouTube’s compression messes it up a little but you can still see the movie in the carousel.

I've never seen anything like that!
It was a pretty good gimmick to have a zootrope printed on the record.
I remember a few years ago there was a set of Star Wars records that came out with a holographic animation on them. It was of a 3D tie-fighter spinning around. Pretty neat trick.

Which makes me think about something totally unrelated. When George Lucas wrote Star Wars, he probably had a lot of trouble putting on a tie... hence he became a tie-fighter

I can't put my finger on who she reminds me of... was thinking Courtney Barnett, but I'm not so sure. That might just be the young female singer/songwriter angle.
I've had "expectations" and "grace has a gun" on my spotify playlist for a while... she has a great vocal, and I really like the tonality of the guitar. Last time I was in HMV I picked up the album and wandered around with it for a while before putting it down and walking out with nothing... takes a lot to part me from my hard-earned nowadays... maybe next time

Managed to score tickets for Peter Frampton at the Albert Hall in November, which has got me going back and revisiting Humble Pie.

Apparently, yes. But It's years since I went into one. I buy everything on download, mostly from Bandcamp if it's available there.

I know all HMV locations closed down in Canada in 2017.
I personally really miss going to the old downtown Montreal store. The place was super awesome with three floors and metro access.
They had a fairly big section for imports. It was built in the 1990's and I often went there as a teenager.
At some point they moved to another place but it just wasn't the same.

Similar story around here. Branch closures all over. My closest is Canterbury, and that's recently downsized from a huge two floor corner location to a much smaller unit nearby.
Vastly reduced stock levels (and choice). Probably more space given over to vinyl and t-shirts than CDs now... Amazon must be laughing their t*ts off..!

I'm surprised anyone buys CDs these days given the ease with which downloads can be bought and with hi-res downloads available too. These days I typically buy 16-bit Flac downloads. I'm probably fooling myself thinking I can hear the difference, with my old ears, between MP3s and Flacs but I think I can. I wouldn't bother with 24-bit Flacs though. I guess it's just a convenience thing.

I sold most of my CDs years ago - just keeping a few I couldn't replace with downloads - and sold all my vinyl sometime before that.

Yeah, while there does seem to be a thing for vinyl and even cassette these days CDs haven't got 'old' enough for a revival?

Been a year or two since i was in a HMV and even then it was a pale shadow of former shops and mostly full of random tat (oh how I loathe 'Funko Pops'). Don't think it's there now but not been that way for a while as I've had no reason to.
There was also a big thing recently about one of the big HMVs on Oxford Street is now one of those dodgy 'American Candy Store' shops connected to tax scams and counterfeit merchandise.

I didn't want to throw out my CDs entirely, but what I did was bought storage cases where each 'page' holds eight CDs (four each side), and transferred all my CDs into two of those which take up a tiny fraction of the space. The CD boxes got thrown out. All the music is on the Mac and I set up a Raspberry Pi Zero W and Hifiberry DAC hooked up to my old stereo speakers so I play music through those speakers rather than through the teeny Mac speakers.

The only CDs I've actually bought recently have been stuff I couldn't get as data, often stuff imported from Japan when I had the disposable income!

Most of my CD's came from garage sales and charity shops. I figured that at .50$-1$ a disk, it's cheaper than a digital download and I get to look at the case cover.
The only thing annoying is that the remote on my CD player gave-up the ghost, so I have to press the buttons on the machine...

After more than two years of cancelations and reschedules, finally got to see Bon Iver at Wembley Arena last week.
Well worth the wait. Not a fan of Taylor Swift, but the place went bananas when she made a surprise guest appearance to sing "Exile".

Also just ordered a live double album by The Dead South, who I've been watching on YouTube...

Due to health issues, he has to perform seated, but boy, can he still play.

I must admit that she is a good player. Personally I'm not a big fan of Tire Le Coyote (it's actually more like shoot the coyote with a rifle).
I don't know if he took his name from the animal or from the coyote in western movies, which is the common name for the bad guy in French.

You might like Les Coyboys Fringants though. They are more folk pop in the traditional Quebec style.
