Just thought I'd start something completely OT simply for the fun of it.
It's a place where we can share some musical oddities we just discovered and shameless plugs for our favorite bands.

So, lets start this off.
This was a Google Home suggestion that had me going WTF in a good way.
All Pink Floyd fans remember the song Brain Damage from their album The Dark Side of the Moon.
Well I just discovered a "remix" of some sorts that just blew me away. It's by a small Texas band called the Austin Lounge Lizards. And what a remix it is!
They first shortened it up from the 8-9 minute original length to a mere 2:30 min. and then, not to make it weird enough, they play it as a bluegrass!

College music major here, I'll play too! Radiohead's cover of Oasis/"Wonderwall" is fun in its own way, but Brad Mehldau's version takes the cake: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHiwry1J6OU - the bass plays a repeating pattern that doesn't match up exactly with the melody (it shifts as the song goes along) yet still sounds good in every iteration. Pretty cool.

I've never been particularly interested in bluegrass but the Rocket Man version by Iron Horse is fantastic. The banjo player hast quite some stamina and the lead singer's voice is great. Thanks for sharing!

Just wanted to let you know, Becky, that this post got me interested in Bluegrass and was the reason I picked up a mandolin (I used to play the violin/viola for more than 10 years as a kid and this has really helped me learn the mandolin very quickly). I'm a bit late to the thread and don't have any recommendations but as I am a massive jazz fan (95% of my listening, 5% soul/blues /funk) this has been a a real interesting sideline so thanks everyone for opening my eyes and ears just a tiny bit

I've listened to jazz for years. I think it started with Oscar Peterson, then Dave Brubeck, probably back in the 70s. My latest find is Joey Alexander who is just an amazing kid.

Another fairly recent find is GoGo Penguin. Maybe not everybody's taste.

Nice!! Lately I've been binging on Nitin Sawhney (eg, https://open.spotify.com/album/113ourW7An6FwZnC4gRYlz) and this sounds like his earlier, jazzy stuff. It's juuuuuuust groove-oriented enough that I don't mind the jazz elements, but if it were even slightly more straight-ahead, I'd hate it

I've never been a huge jazz fan, but like many in the province I reserve a sweet spot for UZEB. They used to do a type of fusion jazz that was typically "Montreal". Their guitarist even lives in the same city as I do!

I heard something interesting on the radio the other day, Shazzammed it and it turned out to be a piece called Photography - written by Errollyn Wallen. It's modern English string music, so you might think worlds apart from some of the other content suggested on this thread, but then a banjo, guitar or ukulele are all string instruments too.

NightTracks on BBC Radio 3 is OK, but I always feel it's never quite as adventurous as the old Late Junction show which used to run Tue-Wed-Thu until it was demoted to just one show on Friday late last year.
That was the programme where sometimes you'd hear something and think "What the heck is this? It's awful!" and next night hear something which made you think "What the heck is this? It's absolutely fantastic!"
I mean, "A Sound" by Nicole Mitchell was not probably something I'd have sought out but listening to it last year blew me away with its sheer energy.

The Thursday night "NightTracks: Archive Remix" sequence often uses a 'radio tuning' motif between tracks, which reminds me of the days of my youth when I'd lie under the covers with my radio tuning slowly from one end of the dial to the other on each waveband, just to see what I could find.

This is two rare videos of Jimmy Hendrix playing acoustic guitar. Both obviously shot on film the first half is very high quality shot in a studio, ‘Hear My Train Comin’ on 12 string. The second half is ‘Hound Dog’, looks like it was shot at a party but the quality isn’t bad.

I'm thinking "Ganga". A band name should be short, memorable, and relatively easy to pronounce. There are of course exceptions to the rule, but I want to give myself as much of a leg up as possible

Have you thought of using two words that nobody would normally put together in the same Google search?
That's how Vampire Weekend came up with their name.
That way you're guaranteed that people who are looking for your band won't have to sift through junk results.

I was brushing my teeth this morning and the words Swami Fluid popped into my mind...
Maybe there's something to work with there?

Without even reading this post, I finally came up with a name

and it kind of fits Francois' criteria: Saraswati Trading Company. Now that that's done, I can concentrate on actually releasing the music
