A redscale scanning question
« on: July 31, 2014, 09:09:58 PM »
This is not a "how" question, more of a "WTF" question  ;)

I got some redscale processed. I usually just get negs but forgot to mention that this time so I got a CD and prints. The CD and prints were insanely red. OK I know I am shooting redscale, so I know I should expect a red tint! But the REDNESS of these was rather unusual as I was shooting this at such a low ISO that other colours should be present as well.

As it came off the CD:

Applying the "Auto Colour" in Photoshop:

So I scanned them on the Espon, using both the Espon and the Silverfast software, WITHOUT ANY COLOUR CORRECTION, and they came our exactly how I was expecting them to:
Silverfast:

Epson:

SO WHAT IS THE QUESTION AND WHY AM I COMPLAINING THAT MY SCANNER IS SCANNING IMAGES THAT MAKE ME HAPPY????
I just am startled that the Noritsu scanner would be seeing them as SO RED. Any ideas? One that I have is that film is upsidedown in the Noritsu scanner as the emulsion is flipped in redscale film and this could be kicking is 'auto' colour adjustment out of whack. Any other ideas???

PS: Please feel free to say "Do NOT buy this bike!!!"

Ok, DON'T BUY THIS BIKE!
There's too many things wrong with it. It's not comfortable. It's not practical to go and do some grocery shopping with it. You can't get bags to put your camera gear on it. And you get to use it only a few months a year. Plates and insurance cost an arm and a leg. But most of all, you know how Italian stuff makes you happy? Well you definitely don't want that. Being miserable is so much more economical  ::)

As for the redscale, I think I have an answer.
The Noritsu scanner determines the film type and frame position by reading the barcode on the edge of the film. Since it's reading the barcode upside down, who knows what type of film it was thinking was actually there.

Wait, is that why you are "gsgary"??? That is an evil suggestion!!!!! It is particularly evil because most of my brain knows I am too old and live in the wrong part of the world for a Monster, but most of my brain thinks something like a GS is a perfectly reasonable 'compromise' haha. So you get evil bonus points for suggesting something a bit more practical - that still has the Ducati sound, torque etc. I am glad I am broke right now haha

Haha thanks for the reminder of how that bike would make me too happy for only a few months of our Canadian year ;-)

And great hypotheses for the noritsu!! I bet that is the reason. Its almost like an inverted scan of if it scanned it as positive film.

But it's not Italian!
Japanese make machines of impeccable quality and smart design... But Italians make machines for passion and love.
This is like comparing a Yamaha scooter to a Vespa. The first might be reliable, but everyone who had a Vespa talks fondly of it like if it was something special... For me that's more important in a machine than anything else. I want it to stir emotions!

I want mine to be reliable when I'm riding to the Russian boarder in Norway then to Nordkapp and then down the Arctic Highway 6000 miles in 3 weeks

That's what I've read when I've looked into it though the amount of red will vary with the type of film and the ISO you shoot it at.

You had this done at Shoppers? If so give Sandy a warning, you can ask for her to process things, and she can sometimes temper the crazy colours. We forgot to mention we were fine with weird colours when we dropped off some Lomochrome and colour correcting the scans drove poor Sandy nuts! For what it is worth I actually like when I get the crazy reds.

am happy with a japanese honda silverwing maxi scoot! Heck I'm fine with a small taiwan 50cc kym. I've had my share of issues with Piaggio, Aprilia, puch and other associated companies.

Hi mike. Sandy did not so it and it was one of the gals that did it, so I can't think they tried to correct it. I bet it was what Francois said.

Francois, it is that ridiculous sound they only a Ducati makes when idling that makes my knees weak. I am best just to try to ignore this and walk on by haha.

did you get the files mirrored or not? If you got them mirrored then their noritsu read the barcode and scanned as how it was set up for that film.
But hey, from my experience epsons autocorrecting makes even cross processed film look normal compared to how the lab scans. Lomo fans can switch labs depending on how their particular scanner interprets their xpro rolls.

Oh, and no comment on the two wheelers ;)

Speaking of Ducati, has any ever used the cameras they designed? I see them pop on ebay for a small fortune. I've wondered if they were worth the pound of flesh that people ask for them.

I've been told that it's a bad idea to buy anything that won't allow you to take your Grandma out for a ride...  :o
