"Where are we going?" the kid asked. "Out." I replied. "Out where?" he pressed as only a kid can. "Out there." I pointed out to the open water as I started the engine of the boat.
"Why?"
"Why what?"
"Why are we going out there?"
"To pay homage to Fluminian."
"What's a Fluminian?"
"Not what, who. Fluminian is a who."
"OK, then who, who is Fluminian."
"He's a photographer that takes a lot of pictures of boats on the water."
"So what did you buy from him?"
"Huh?"
"You said you had to pay him something."
"I said pay homage. That means to show respect by a public display. I like his pictures, so I want to take a picture of this boats bow against the water to show my respect for the images he produces."
We motored out to sea, watching the small waves crest and fall, the fluid dynamics of the undulating water keeping time with the motors thrumming. Eventually the kid bored of watching the water.
"What's this chain for?" he asked.
"Don't mess with that chain. Just ignore it."
"But what does it do?"
"It attaches to a plug at the bottom of the boat. You pull it and the boat will flood and sink."
"Oh, that's good" he grinned mischieviously. Then he pulled the chain. He was still laughing as the boat faded from view as it sank to the bottom of the sea.
The little bastard.
