This truly is amazing news...and the results look great. Bob from New55 is clearly my nomination for Photo Hero of 2012  :)

So what's next? I guess more trials to get things rock solid and then the big question...production? I hope he's able to make the leap into mass production.

If you check the new55 blog, it seems like the first objective is to get production to a scale where it would cost no more than $10 per sheet........so it's unlikely to be a mass market product. There's also a "new55" Flickr group. Not a lot on there just yet but it looks interesting.

Incidentally, it appears that it's possible to create a "negative" out of the peel-off bit of the type 55. Anyone ever done this? Do you need a degree in organic chemistry and specialised kit to do it or would a muppet like me stand a fighting chance?

That depends if you're more the Dr. Benson Honeydew or the Beaker type  :P

Well, when I played drums in the band I was in at / after school, my nickname was "Animal" after the hairy dude in the Muppets (not joking, it really was). However, I'm definitely more "Beaker" than "Dr. Bunsen Honeydew" these days.

Is it alright if I dream about The Impossible Project and New55 FILM working together for the good of mankind?

Maybe we should encourage them by nominating them for a Nobel Prize.

hey LD - this is positive/negative film, meaning there's no need to try and "create a negative" as it's part of the whole package. this is why people want their Type 55 back. it comes with a negative and a positive.... like a real negative, not the junky kind you do polaroid transfers with. :) so, no ounce of organic chemistry is necessary. just a bucket and some sodium sulfite to wash the negative. it is the best way to shoot. Brill....I stand corrected  :D

I'm looking forward to being able to get my hands on some of this new film (finances permitting) as the photos I've seen on the New55 blog and Flickr sites have been exceptional. Although I've been shooting film since the early 70s, I'm a relative newbie to "instant" so even a bucket with some sodium sulphite in it sounds pretty exotic!

Thanks for the info.

Paul.

Hi Zoe - thanks for dropping by. it's great to hear that the old peel apart is getting a new lease of life.

Paul (LD) - if you are interested in this stuff, it really is worth taking a look at Zoe's work to see what can be done with it.  She makes amazing pictures with the stuff. We have a guest gallery of Zoe's work here on filmwasters, but you can also look on her website too - http://www.zoewiseman.com Great Stuff :)

Hi Leon.

Yes I'm genuinely interested in the type 55 film. As you know from the Broadstairs trip, I had a few sheets of the original Polaroid stuff given to me and I was very taken with the relative ease of actually using it - compared to the dark slides and sheet film.

As I don't have the facility to process my own negatives, the potential to create a proper negative from type 55 (as well as the original print) is the icing on the cake. If cleaning the neg is as simple as Zoe suggests (a bucket full of dilute sodium sulphite) then I'm definitely up for it - though I doubt it will be cheap. Good things tend not to be...

I had a look at Zoe's website when Paul (M) posted this at the head of the thread and it's been saved as one of my favourites. Stunning work and something from which to take real inspiration.

Cheers. Paul.
