I'm new here, and this is my first post!

Like many I was at toycamera.com, which is sadly all but mothballed.
Otherwise, I'm a longtime lurker, and not much into scanning unfortunately (I like me prints!). That said, I'm trying to get better, and here's a place I keep a few shots
http://grotonbridgefilms.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

BTW I'm also a filmmaker, shooting super-8. Here's my latest film, running around USA festivals:

Very happy to be here, seems like a great group!

I think I found the podcast first on itunes, then came to the site after a listen.

I first found the site via toycamera.com and thought that it was a really tightly knit forum so I let it stay. at the same time I started looking around for a good film based community with many too big, too niched and some outright weird haha.

so after noticing the link on more and more sites that I freqvented I started listening and became a fan of the podcast. I still love those round table discussions, atleast it lives on in some way here in the forum :)

so yeah, I came back.. lurked to get a feel of things and after seeing that others joined as well I jumped on and I haven't looked back since! I used to lurk and post a bit on many forums but I think I found the place that fits me best. -much love, guys n gals!<3 haha~

edit: I think the biggest resason why I picked this as my main place for internet photo chatter is that I feel seen here. that just makes me fluffy and warm inside  :-* hehe :-*

edit2: welcome erik! :)

I think I first saw the filmwasters forum after seeing Skorj or moominsean pictures somewhere (flickr?).
Also found it quite unlike any other forum and decided to stick around after lurking for a while.

The weekend threads are pretty good too :)

I can't remember how I found this place, but I'm glad I did. This place has been a great respite from all the digital evangelists who feel the need to school me.

This has been a really fun thread and a geuinely funny read. Some laugh-out-loud comments, some great insights and some really useful feedback. Thanks for taking the time.

Just to let everyone know....Diane is actually on commission, so beware of her spiel. She can be very persuasive.

Jonas: I'm happy to do a podcast every couple of weeks if you're willing to edit it  :D

Andrea: What's the answer to the question? Which RF do you take to New York? I've always wanted to know.

charles binns: To be honest, mate; it actually sounds like things have started to go right for you.

With his "leftfield good looks" phrase, Phil wins the award for the most elegantly back-handed compliment I've ever read. Bravo sir. You are a true gent.

Doughnuts/donuts? No-one mentioned sugary baked goods to me when we started the site.

Don Brice.

I knew him back in the old country. We were having a beer and I was telling him of my move to London, he asked me what I was going to do photographically.

I told him I had lost my soul to the commercial satan and needed to get it back. I needed to find a camera club that wasn't a camera club, I needed to find a group who were talented, brave, non judgemental, non pretentious, non cliquey, had a wide portfolio of skills to share, had opinions worth listening to and would listen to others opinions without shouting them down. A group who could find a plastic camera as fascinating as a Linoff or Sinar.

Well we couldn't find any of that so he sent me here

 ;)

I am still here so something must have worked out  :D

I would nearly volunteer (dusty skills from a former career) but I have hillbilly bandwidth and I think it would still be two months between podcasts. Unless we used envelopes.

So sorry Andrea and Phil! You know us Americans. Can't find the Boondocks with both hands.

Therefore:
  • I am now the Bumpkin on the Board
  • Andrea and Phil are the only voting members of the "Find the Farmer" game

Andrea, Phil: where can I find the U.K. farmer with the most entertaining regional dialect and the least indoor plumbing? Bonus points if the regional dialect is either entirely vowels or lacks vowels altogether.

(I have to mention, I was on a train and some guy got on around Eskmeals and his dialect broke my brain in two. I'm pretty sure he had reduced English to only N, S, P, T and "ah". I could understand everyone else on the train, everyone else on the train could understand him, he could understand me, but I only understood about one word in fifteen of his and I said a lot of, "Oh, really?" and leaned on my wife, who picked up about one word in twelve and could reply, "Really? No toast?" We still call him the guy who spoke the Op Language.)

Hey, Jack. I'm  sure the various regions of the UK would all point the finger at different places, so, I will be tactful and say something like, Belgium ;D

Do we have any Belgians? If so I meant a different place.

Well, if stuck in a rut, you can always replace them with New-Foundlanders. They speak with such an accent that when interviewed, national television has to subtitle English into English... They have their own time zone that is not one hour later but only 30 minutes late... they're the source of jokes from the rest of the country... and they even have a town called... D**** (I did want to keep this safe for work so I put a link to their Wikipedia page)

And since I don't think anybody out there is member of Filmwasters, I'll call this perfect fodder :)

Erik

Welcome Eric! Filmmakers astound me as to their dedication. A friend at school had some 8mm taken by his father in the days up to, and after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. His mother standing outside the base hospital, then some grabs of the aftermath. Straight off their reels, they had a raw appeal that has always fascinated me.

With digital editing suites, and no need to copy, splice, or be worried about your source material it is a wonder more people do not indulge in real film making. You can still buy numerous types of 8mm over the counter in Japan, and I often see glorious, multilensed, 8mm kits in velvet lined boxes for sale here too.

One day... One day too perhaps we can add a section like Photo Essays, for filmwasting movie makers to showcase their work. When I retire and need another project perhaps. Look forward to more regardless!

For me, like many others, it was through Skorj/Kuroneko - probably UER -> his flickr -> somehow finding my way here.
That, or his 600SE review. I got a hold of one a few years ago and was ravenous for information about it.

Exposed! Good to see though! That 600SE review has taken years to get where it is now, mainly due to many other's contributions too. Skj.

Another newcomer waving hands here. Hello everyone!

This is my second attempt to register. First time I was told I am a dirty spammer which did upset me a bit. But it got me to re-install my computer and change my passwords which is a good thing to do I guess. Anyway, I was a keen user of RF cameras before someone handed me a Holga. Then I became interested in pinholes and saw Leon's 4x5 video which I think ultimately led me to your door.

I'm happy to be here, it seems like a lot of fun.

Welcome, Mab. I'm very sorry about the hiccup you experienced during the sign up process. This site (like many others) comes under constant attack from spammers and the like, so we do our best to try and keep them from getting onto the forum. Because the admins here don't run the site on a full time basis, we have to rely on automated processes a certain amount and this means that occasionally people will be mistakenly identified as spammers and their registration rejected.

Thank you for persevering and I hope your time on FW will be rewarding and fun.

This reminds me of something Miller told me recently about how he'd been down at Trafalgar Square a couple of years ago for the "I'm a photographer, not a terrorist" protest at the same time as me, Leon and Salvo and I'd said to him in a forum post, "You should have got in touch and met up with us..." (or something along those lines). Now, we've long since been classed as "No need to avoid" by Miller too, but at the time his reaction was "Why the hell would I want to do that?"   I sometimes forget that a bit of wary circling is a sensible thing to begin with.

LOL... Yeah, I found FW when I Googled something about going down to the demo as the feds had pulled me up and given me some terrorist propaganda as well as writing me some notice.

After I got back I added to the post and well, here I am still...  ED: To be honest in the beginning I was never gonna hang around but you of all people made the difference...... LOL

I think I found the forum through pinhole photography, but not sure how ...

The values and attitudes embodied by the forum are endearing, the clubby, in-jokey tone of many of the posts perhaps less so. Still, love the philosophy, so I'll stick around in my low-key, semi-lurking fashion.

I've never thought that our larking around could be seen like that, so sorry if we've offended you Peter.  I guess we'd be happier if the comment was just about a jokey tone ... the "clubby" and "in" portions are quite worrying. I've not really seen that side of the forum myself.

We definitely don't want to be all apuggy and serious, but we clearly haven't got the balance right.

Feedback is appreciated in any form, so thanks for sharing that with us, Artobest.

Leon, I don't honestly think this about balance, offending people, or getting things right (or wrong). We do what we do (be it endearing or otherwise) and we've ended up the way we've ended up. The tone of any discussion changes along with the seasons, the issue under discussion, the membership at the time, the FWers taking part in the specific discussion and so on.

I think on this specific thread there's absolutely no way of avoiding an 'insider' vibe and possibly something of a self-congratulatory tone, but certainly that's not the case with all posts.

If Artobest, Peter (?), is happy to drop by occasionally and participate in a low key manner, that's great.

I agree with Ed. If you have a group that communicate on a regular basis  it might feel exclusive and 'clubby' to a new person or someone that just lurks, but, I really don't see that as how we are.

I love the fact that there is no friction here. It is really the most relaxed forum I have ever been part of - I'd be off in a flash if it wasn't. I guess it's a bit like becoming a local at a boozer, the more you pop in and join in the more you feel as if you have a handle on the personalities and what is being discussed.

Peter, I hope you hang around and join in. We are all rather nice albeit a little odd ;D

You know artobest (can we just call you Peter?), the in-joking is never meant to make anyone feel awkward. Everyone is welcome to join in the conversation. The humor is there mostly to break the seriousness of some threads. I personally know I have a big responsibility in a lot of the leg-pulling. But I also bring a lot of somewhat hard to find information... a sometimes hard act to balance.
That's a bit the nature of the forum. No matter how new to film photography or how experienced. No matter is the questions are hard or easy. No matter if you come here for the camaraderie or for learning new stuff. Everyone is welcome and gets greeted with open arms.

So, feel free to jump in the conversation when you feel comfortable. Just don't get deterred by the humor.

We can offer you a virtual pint if you want to join in the conversation but don't know how  ;)

the clubby, in-jokey tone of many of the posts perhaps less so.

Well i suppose once a bunch of folks get comfortable in a place, everything isn't always so serious. Inside jokes are inevitable when a group has been communicating awhile, but i never see an unwelcoming atittude towards new members. But everyone is different, some are dry, some are hokey, etc. everyone has different needs from a place like this. I guess the trade off of not having flame wars on the forum is a lighter mood overall.

Think carefully before you answer this one, Sean....but am I dry or am I hokey?

Please don't apologise. In my clumsy way I was trying to say that, to me, it can sometimes feel like arriving late to a party where everyone else knows each other really well. Yes, awkward, perhaps - at least, for someone like me - but far from offensive or actively hostile.

I did half-lurk-hang-around a bit at the toycamera.com forum in the early-to-late Middle Ages, and when I checked back on that place in more recent times, it was gone, burnt and razed by some unknown tribe of Naffers. So I decided to look elsewhere and lo, filmwasters.com! Here was the old teenyboppers, like Leon Taylor, Ed Wenn, Astrobeck, moominsean and skorj and a lot of other splendid characters. So I decided to join in a bit. :)

Knaster ... did you have an alternative moniker back in the medieval depths?

Welcome nonetheless! Great to have you here.
