Fellow Travellers: What Brought You Here?
« on: March 15, 2012, 12:44:41 AM »
When we started FW 6+ years ago we had no idea whether anyone else would want to use it and we certainly didn't have any clue that it would still be going strong this far down the line. This week I came across an old email thread from 2005 where the 5 of us were discussing whether or not to even include a forum as part of the website we were planning to set up....and one of us wrote something to the effect of, "well, even if no-one else joins in, the 5 of us could use the forum instead of emailing each other all the time." Indeed.

Anyway, when we finally did launch the site we sent emails to everyone we knew who we thought might be interested and sat back to see if anyone fancied playing. A ton of people signed up in the first few weeks and...........well, with some very notable exceptions that's the last we heard of most of them  :D  BTW, I can't tell you how pleased I am that some of you have stuck around since we kicked things off; thanks! What is just as cool though, is the trickle of 'real' people who signed up and joined in. Numbers-wise, the active membership has stayed around where we like it (not too many to be impersonal, but easily enough to keep things fresh and interesting), but the personnel is constantly shifting and while we'd love it if some people had stayed for longer, we're really excited that new people join every week.

So here's the question: how on earth did all of you talented, erudite and extremely attractive people find us?

Toycamera.com, Skorj and a magazine called lightleaks. Because we were all on tc.com, and Skorj was starting up the idea of lightleaks and I volunteered to do the design. I showed up here because of Mark, but i don't remember the specifics. Been here 6 years next month, though looks like my first post was on June 16, 2006, about a File magazine toy camera contest.

It was also because of the Toycamera.com... saw the link somewhere in there (or some indication can't remember) and found interesting, it's been 3 years... :)

I think I followed moominsean and mijonju via the Interwebs and Flickr and lurked for a while, then cross-posted some stuff about Rapid cartridges maybe two years ago? Then dove in.

All you lurkers, don't be afraid! :)

OH, and I left iTunes cooking overnight one Friday and my daughter and I watched all the video podcasts back-to-back one wonderful Saturday morning, then I listened to the podcasts during my morning commute, then I dove in.

I can remember the process but not the specifics.

Having been a member of a number of wesites / forums since the early noughties, I'd become very disspirited with all of them as they had become almost "digital evangelist" sites and extremely cliquey. Despite being very interested in the new digital medium, I was never going to move away from film. Consequently, I started to rebel in my own little way and divorced myself from those sites / forums full of the easily pleased and started  to look for ones that had "film" at the core and a spark of originality.

I think APUG and THIAPS were a couple I looked at most regularly. However, for my taste and interests, APUG was way too demanding in its insistence on analaog (sic) processing from start to finish. Their site / their rules, so move on. I have developed a lot film down the years and will do so again. However, I doubt I'll ever have a darkroom. APUG is still interesting in an encylopaedic sort of way but I doubt it's a bunch of people I could ever hang out with.

Then I saw mention of "Filmwasters" (can't remember where - maybe APUG) and thought, let's see what that's about...... This place keeps me sane.

Started listening to the Film Photography Podcast, can't remember when, but they mentioned the podcasts, so watched them all.

Then lurked here for a while, decided that everyone seemed to be normal so joined in.....

I think I came here very early on, dropped off and then came back.  I'm not sure, but it could've been that man Sandeha's fault the second time. Or Ed.

Discovered Filmwasters through a link on a friends website ( 2007 ), wasted some weeks by following/ reading the forum and asked if i could be a member too. Specially love the postcardexchanges and collaborations. Visiting the website almost every day and still like it......

Great answers so far. Keep 'em coming.

decided that everyone seemed to be normal so joined in.....

:D ;D Indeed! It's not always the case with photography forums, but I'm glad we passed the test.

This reminds me of something Miller told me recently about how he'd been down at Trafalgar Square a couple of years ago for the "I'm a photographer, not a terrorist" protest at the same time as me, Leon and Salvo and I'd said to him in a forum post, "You should have got in touch and met up with us..." (or something along those lines). Now, we've long since been classed as "No need to avoid" by Miller too, but at the time his reaction was "Why the hell would I want to do that?"  :D I sometimes forget that a bit of wary circling is a sensible thing to begin with.

I think I had heard vague rumours of a rather interesting and friendly photography forum but hadn't put 2 and 2 together until I did a wet plate course last year and Carl Radford recommended FW.  I had dabbled in a couple of LF photography forums before then but didn't really feel at home as I am untechnical and female.  Did I just say that?  Oh well.  I like it here though :-)

I lurked on and off for a couple of years having already known Susan online for many years, I tend to lurk on things mostly. It was only after getting to know Diane somewhere else and realising she was here too that I decided to sign up properly  ;D

Google brought me here initially. I was working in Qatar and was bored, bored, bored and idly searching for info on something or other. I found what I wanted here and then started reading lots of the old posts. I lurked for a while. Learned a lot.

After the brief period of lurking I saw that this place isn't full of all the usual trolling, cliques, lens testing, photos of lawn furniture, brick walls and graveyard ornaments, 'my camera is considerably better than yours' arguments, bad advice, ill-informed nitwits, brand snobbery, petty squabbling, offers of cheap medication or power-crazed admins. It is full of friendly people who are happy to share good photography and advice without getting bogged down in all the irrelevant tripe. So I joined.

This place is contrary to all the laws of internet- how can it exist in such a fantastic form?- I feel like I should start a thread titled "are Summicrons sharper than Summiluxes?" or "What is the best camera?" to restore the natural order of things  :P

I think for me it was a combo of things.

Stumbling onto Sean's blog via TC.com (and seeing a few happy familiar faces)
Googling a variety of hack ideas (and finding the forum)
googling a variety of cameras that i wanted (and finding the reviews)

Like everyone else I lurked for a while.

Pretty sure I arrived via seans blog where I would have been reading about polaroid info of some kind, had a look around here and stayed. .

have since read (and where possible contributed) to many interesting articles,  viewed countless great pics, and swopped, sold and acquired a number of cameras... great stuff :-)

Ed, you beat me to it....!! A hint of "Harry Enfield" in that statement  ;)

I would DEFINITELY buy one - if made in my size - 'cos I am "considerably larger than you...."

I think I search for analog photography podcasts on iTunes. Yours was the most fun and I somehow found the forum and stuck around. I've been a member in other forums too. But I've since abandoned them all because FW is just so much more laid back and everybody is nice. Which is a rare thing to find on the Internet.

Stumbled across the FW forum by searching tips on Polaroid Land Camera 195. Then found out the fantastic podcasts.
I have to say the name "Filmwasters" is super eyecatching for us film users!  ::)

Wow, two people (at least so far) came here because I suggested it!! That is wonderful!! and they have become friends..the very best part!!   my story is this....
several years ago, 5 or 6 maybe, I had started purchasing the Black & White Photography Magazine..out of the U.K....( I absolutely adore that magazine BTW)..and I saw an article about Damion..well, I rushed to my computer and started doing searches for him and it brought me to this site or I just followed a link he had in the article..The best move I ever made..To think of all the friends I have made..even traveling out of the country to meet up..Really and truly the high light of last year was getting to meet up with some of you!!

So, do I get a prize for the best entry here?..or maybe that prize is just being involved with so many wonderful people!!

What memories this brings back!

I too came here through the Toycamera site. Many years ago, I had joined the toycamera site. I stumbled onto it while doing some research on the Holga (which is in itself a very long story). Problem was that at that time, they were very single minded on what a toy camera was. While I was more interested in the lo-fi aesthetics, for them, a picture that was not taken with a Holga or a Diana simply wasn't a good picture. I tried to join the club and tried as hard as I could to locally source a Holga... but it just wasn't available locally.

Then, Leon (who had a gazillion posts on the forum) announced that they were starting a new site called Filmwasters. I lurked around a bit and then decided to join. For a while, I was keeping up with both sites. But as toycamera became stale and plagued with some internal fights, I decided to definitely jump boat and use Filmwasters as my primary social network. I'm glad I did since I never found a site so open and plain simple to live with around the web.

What I liked mostly is the lack of "gear segregation" present. I could do both high-fi with my Nikon, Lo-fi with a Vivitar. And it was all OK. And now, after oh-so many years, I'm still here. Funny thing is, thinking back, I never even posted an introduction tread! Also, I used to post those almost multi-page messages. Now, I tend to keep things a bit more simple and concise.... Oh well, I'm drifting now.

I think I found Filmwasters through the podcasts on iTunes. I like the informal, non-judgemental vibe to this community that's disappointingly rare in photo forums. Joining Filmwasters has gone hand-in-hand with my exploring analogue photography & printing. Also this is the only site where I'll actually post a photo I've made.

I was a lurker for quite some time, I think I did follow moominsean from Flickr also.

Ever since I got into film big time a few years ago, I have been looking for a place that's just about the photos on film, without all the gear or fine-art snobbery.  And this is one place where I read every post because of that.

What bought me here?  the drugs, I think

My mummy gave me too much Calpol in the 60s...One minute I'm in my cot tripping out to Purple Haze, the next thing I know I'm 46, the X factor is on the box, I've got a plastic camera in my hand and my underpants on my head.

Where did it all go wrong?

My apologies, you two !!  ;)

First there was Photonet, then Nelsonfoto, and then a little time with Apug as I was trying to shoehorn myself back into British culture.  And then a prod in this direction following an Apug meet.

Ironically, while 'waste' is in the title, there isn't really anywhere else you can find so many ideas on sustainable photography.

Mmmm, Sandeha, that road to ruin sounds vaguely familiar.

Photonet was where I found Nelson, and possibly apug [where one discusses the chemical formula of sepia toner etc]and rangefinders [where one discusses which lens you would use on  a trip to NewYork or wherever] before being 'invited' here. I think, possibly.

ja, ja, in my case it was Skorj´s review of the Polaroid 600se. I signed up to thank for the great review and photos, which by the way convinced me to buy the Polaroid 195 that I still own. Then some time lapsed since I became active in the forum and have never stopped visiting it. I have no facebook, no tweeter.. no nothing. Filmwasters is the only online place where I feel comfortable and surrounded by friends  ;D

Odd that.

Then a chance meeting via "Foodwasters" ... Led me here and and I've been hoarding ever since ...

I was surfing the net on some film related topics.  Being new (again) to film photography, I have a lot of questions.  Somehow, my search found this forum.  The name struck me as funny as well.  Since it's 100% film related, I thought I could learn a lot here.  I haven't posted a lot since I spent the last year in South Korea and was away from my cameras.  Now that I'm back I'll be here a bit more often. I was able to shoot a few rolls of 120 this weekend.  :D

it was probably while re-browsing an old Black & White Photography Magazine, one of Ailsa's, and/or APUG that I thought about visiting this site.

I'm still here but mainly watching these days, lot of good photography here.

Pretty sure I saw a mention in B&WPM as well.

I have no facebook, no tweeter.. no nothing. Filmwasters is the only online place where I feel comfortable and surrounded by friends

Well, that's saying something! Makes it worth while... Thanks all, as I've often wondered about how we've lasted and kept so many people interested for so long. Skj.

No idea!
If anyone knows, I'd love to know who to blame :-)

In my case I blame you - you showed me the way. In fact I blame you for many things (re-introduction to film, L'Eroica, Tandems, toy cameras)  ;)

I may have to report you to the moderators for this!!!! I'm not sure many will know what L'Eroica is and may jump to conclusions. And as for tandems.... Islanders, Eh??? :-)
