Best Practise with R09

Hi, I ran out of the Aculux Leon gave me  ;D And the Infosol that I got from my local shop and found myself in Waterloo yesterday.  I popped into Silverprint and bought 500ml of R09.

Now ... The Massive Dev Chart seems to differ from what the bottle says with regards to times and processes ...

What are the waters top tips, I have a roll of the cheap AFX we al got from Photographica that I've shot in an old Welta Weltix I've just got working, mostly urban test shots and I like high contrast ...


Ideas ?

I have just started using R09 and I devd a roll of apx from photographica in it going by the massive dev chart and felt the shots were quite underdeveloped. I then dev'd a roll of fp4 from my Rb67 going by the bottle times and was much happier with the results. Was pretty disappointed in the MDC tbh :-p however don't take my word for it. I'm sure some more experienced R09 users will give you more advice

are you chaps only scanning the results?  I've found the MDC times seem to work well if you are planning to print from the negs - bu bear in mind they are just user submitted results.  What works for one printing process wont necessarily be great for another.

P.s. I think the mdc times seem to be for lower contrast. If you like higher contrast I would go for bottle times. But that's just from my very limited experience as I said

Don't know the stock you're shooting, but I've found that stand developing Tri-X in the R09 gives a lot of grain and pretty high contrast.  (1:100 for one hour)

on stand developing; I mostly took a half stand on 1:50 for half an hour, agitating a bit at start, middle and end. worked good enough for me on a bunch of different films. :)

interesting. I'm no fan of kodak bw films but I'm gonna try some next week in caffenol.
