My week/weekend...
A couple of photos from Lithuania. Still getting over jet lag so scanning seems to be a good thing to do with my sleep fuzzy brain !
The main purpose of the trip was to document three sites in and around Vilnius: the Paneriai Masacre site (mass execution site of 100,000 Jews, Poles and Russians [70,000, 20,000 & 10,000 respectively), the main Jewish cemetery in Vilnius (most of which has a sports stadium built on top of now) and a smaller cemetery in the Old Town area of Vilnius.
These two are from the first site (Paneriai Massacre). 7 pits used for executions between 1941 & 43 and one for burning exhumed bodies in '43-'44 to destroy the evidence once it was clear the war was nearing with the defeat of German armies. A color photo of mine can also be seen on the wikpedia site for Paneriai:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PaneriaiThe 1st photo is the burning pit. The second photo is the smallest execution/mass grave pit. Included in that is my spouse walking through that pit to show the human scale.
A project that will likely take a good 5 years to complete and across several eastern european countries. Not cheerful stuff - but necessary. There is surprisingly little comprehensive photo documentation of this type.
P.S. Please Remind me to not use Fomapan for important shots... ;-(
