Was quite good.

Glad to see some film used, and he appreciated the difference between rattling through pixels and thinking about film.

Is it a series does anyone know? The title read "....fashion" suggesting other episodes.

I liked the bit where Rankin said he felt he was more of - what was it? - a 'bouncing rabbit' than a 'faun'...
He did seem to value film which was nice to see - even though I guess it won't become a regular thing for him (not sure, didn't see it all, fortunately there are a few repeats coming up looks like)..
I thought it was great when they got the original model back for the Helmut Newton shot.

This is my first post, I should say 'hello'! - I finally got round to registering and am pleased to be here.
As far as film goes, I'm working almost exclusively just now in 120, b&w, printing in my own darkroom.

yep, enjoyed it too. I liked the bit with David Bailey the most probably and the Helmut Newton re-shoot.
IMHO the original were more interesting (at least for me), maybe because they already so well fixed in our memory? Probably not easy or correct to compare anyway.
I did not like much his re-shoot of Avedon's elephants and model, somehow for me he did not capture the "spirit".
Nice program though. Not sure whether a series, I think BBC4 are having a fashion themed week covering different aspects.

Yes, I agree the results didn't come that near - didn't see the Avedon one but thought one or two were mildly embarrassingly not like the originals - fun to watch though.

ive just watched this, thought it was very good, didnt think much of rankins repro's but i guess it was an impossible task- trying to duplicate an original moment, all his looked very staged....which they were.

good programme though!

well worth a watch if you can find.

I didn't think much of him. What a first class DICK. But, if you're going to be good at your game (and I've never heard of him), then you need a bit of attitude I suppose.

The recreations were ghastly or didn't add anything, but I suspect they were just an excuse to engage with icons and talk about history and the role of the photographs - this though was done very well. Recommended viewing.

The assistants made me laugh - fancy having people to load up your film and wind the film on for you! I've been looking for ways to involve the family in my photography...

Finally watched it. Thanks for the Youtube link suckerpunch.

It was an interesting programme, thought the guy was ok really after expecting the worst after what I read here. They chose very good photographers I thought and it was amusing. Good to see the analogue gear in use

Yes, the winding on of the Rollei was a bit of overkill.

Maybe this is the government getting people back to work and lifting us all out of the credit crunch. I'd imagined the great public works being roads and rail, not film advancing. Ho hum, you live and learn.

Just to bring back up an old thread, if some still want to view the show which is not available as a torrent, I found it on various file sharing sites.

On Rapidshare and SendSpace, they are the same files. On Upload Jockey, they have been split into smaller chunks. The files contain a total of 48 RAR files which need to be decompressed into a single 701mb file. Don't ask why they did it that way... but the file is good quality just like on TV.

I watched a repeat of this last night and really enjoyed it. I feel the title is a bit misleading, though - to say that the photographs changed fashion is a bit inaccurate, don't you think? I'd say they were more led by the fashion/zeitgeist/whatever - not that that detracts from the power of the photographs Rankin chose to attempt to replicate.

I thought his Guy Bourdain effort was pants, but quite liked the Bailey one. Perhaps that worked because Bailey was there on the scene and they already knew each other?

...still irks me he had assistants to wind the camera & pull the pola test prints outs. Although they had a somewhat cushier number than Capa's assistants, i understand he got through 14 "winders" during the d day landings alone.
