Just thought I'd start something completely OT simply for the fun of it.
It's a place where we can share some musical oddities we just discovered and shameless plugs for our favorite bands.
So, lets start this off.
This was a Google Home suggestion that had me going WTF in a good way.
All Pink Floyd fans remember the song Brain Damage from their album The Dark Side of the Moon.
Well I just discovered a "remix" of some sorts that just blew me away. It's by a small Texas band called the Austin Lounge Lizards. And what a remix it is!
They first shortened it up from the 8-9 minute original length to a mere 2:30 min. and then, not to make it weird enough, they play it as a bluegrass!
Just take a listen and be amazed.

I'll play!
I'm a big fan of Bluegrass so need to share my favorite version of Rocket Man.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=forqmom3YuY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=forqmom3YuY)
Once you hear it...you'll never hear it the same so you are warned....
that banjo player...mercy!
-
Woah! I need to catch my breath after that!
But it fits right in my love of remixes... discover something new every day.
A bit like this Disco remix of Comfortably Numb by the Scissor Sisters... I never thought something like that would be possible but it seems like it is!

College music major here, I'll play too! Radiohead's cover of Oasis/"Wonderwall" is fun in its own way, but Brad Mehldau's version takes the cake: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHiwry1J6OU (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHiwry1J6OU) - the bass plays a repeating pattern that doesn't match up exactly with the melody (it shifts as the song goes along) yet still sounds good in every iteration. Pretty cool.

Have you watched Puddles Pity Party yet?

perhaps something a little more... analogue?

I've never been particularly interested in bluegrass but the Rocket Man version by Iron Horse is fantastic. The banjo player hast quite some stamina and the lead singer's voice is great. Thanks for sharing! :)

Just wanted to let you know, Becky, that this post got me interested in Bluegrass and was the reason I picked up a mandolin (I used to play the violin/viola for more than 10 years as a kid and this has really helped me learn the mandolin very quickly). By now my mandolin and I get along really well and my wife and I started playing Bluegrass together (she started playing the banjo). :) What do we learn of this? Crazy things happen when you're on the Filmwasters forum. :)

Here is something I discovered by accident a little while back.
Has any of you ever dreamed that John Lennon was kidnapped by time traveling space aliens during The Beatles' psychedelic era and brought to 2018 to record a track before returning to the correct time period without anyone ever noticing?
Well, if this sounds a bit far out, it's because the following link is just that.
It's a collaboration between Sean Lennon of the Plastic Ono Band and Les Claypool, the genius bassman behind Primus.
Here's one of their best tracks if you want that psychedelic vibe.

I just recently discovered Rosalía, currently a pop megastar but before that a singer of flamenco. Her flamenco album from a couple years ago, Los Ángeles, is startlingly good. A live perfotmance of De Plata

This one's for Bowie fans.
No, he didn't sing "Enter Sandman" before Metallica did. But after listening to this, you'll definitely be scratching your head (and singing for a few days)
https://youtu.be/V1Wn9j4sQB8

Are people aware of the band "Public Service Broadcasting", who take previously existing audio and build music around it?
Their second album "The Race For Space" contained this Apollo 11 themed song (https://youtu.be/BHIo6qwJarI) which for me is one of their best.
-
Hey! That's very cool and I had never heard of them! I'm putting this one on my star party playlist rotation.

and if you like that, then here's the bagpipe, metal, cover of the Power Rangers theme
https://youtu.be/imjM7MuBrMs
and if I haven't now lost you completely, you might be interested to know Archy plays electronic bagpipes which I'd never heard of before.
-
I must admit that the Public Service Broadcasting video was quite interesting.
As for the bagpipes... I always thought the only thing you were allowed to play on those was Auld Lang Sang? :-\
-
Rather impressed by the Bowie/Metallica tribute, especially played at 3/4 speed as recommended in the comments. The bluegrass cover of Rocket Man is indeed very good, though it cannot beat this, the greatest cover of that song (and perhaps any song) that will ever be recorded: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hARDXYz2io (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hARDXYz2io)

for all the fans of the music of Chicago.....check this out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_torOTK5qc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_torOTK5qc)
they do other covers from 70-80's bands...so it's a rather large rabbit hole to follow....

They also did an hilarious version of the theme song for The good, the bad and the ugly.

A recent find for me, out of Seattle, The True Loves. Describing themselves as a funk and soul group, I'd add jazz into that somewhere.
Here's a link that will drop you into the middle of a performance they gave for KEXP. https://youtu.be/I2njMBxlnmM?t=785

I'm a bit late to the thread and don't have any recommendations but as I am a massive jazz fan (95% of my listening, 5% soul/blues /funk) this has been a a real interesting sideline so thanks everyone for opening my eyes and ears just a tiny bit

I've listened to jazz for years. I think it started with Oscar Peterson, then Dave Brubeck, probably back in the 70s. My latest find is Joey Alexander (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP9GKAbvDxLBqCcEaw4HDiw) who is just an amazing kid.
Another fairly recent find is GoGo Penguin (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-2EEGGKW0UFQN1sfz3Q34A). Maybe not everybody's taste.

Nice!! Lately I've been binging on Nitin Sawhney (eg, https://open.spotify.com/album/113ourW7An6FwZnC4gRYlz (https://open.spotify.com/album/113ourW7An6FwZnC4gRYlz)) and this sounds like his earlier, jazzy stuff. It's juuuuuuust groove-oriented enough that I don't mind the jazz elements, but if it were even slightly more straight-ahead, I'd hate it ;D (for comparison, I LOATHE The Bad Plus)
-
I've never been a huge jazz fan, but like many in the province I reserve a sweet spot for UZEB. They used to do a type of fusion jazz that was typically "Montreal". Their guitarist even lives in the same city as I do!
They were very high energy and played very tight. Here's one of their tracks: 60, rue des lombards https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f65mwrFrqY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f65mwrFrqY)
Not the type of jazz you listen to before going to bed.

I heard something interesting on the radio the other day, Shazzammed it and it turned out to be a piece called Photography - written by Errollyn Wallen. It's modern English string music, so you might think worlds apart from some of the other content suggested on this thread, but then a banjo, guitar or ukulele are all string instruments too.
There's even a jellybean animated video to accompany it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roapcMRiYfc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roapcMRiYfc)
By the way, if you want to hear interesting music that you probably haven't heard before then, if you can get it, listen to NightTracks on BBCRadio3 - amazing stuff being played there.
-
NightTracks on BBC Radio 3 is OK, but I always feel it's never quite as adventurous as the old Late Junction show which used to run Tue-Wed-Thu until it was demoted to just one show on Friday late last year.
That was the programme where sometimes you'd hear something and think "What the heck is this? It's awful!" and next night hear something which made you think "What the heck is this? It's absolutely fantastic!"
I mean, "A Sound" by Nicole Mitchell was not probably something I'd have sought out but listening to it last year blew me away with its sheer energy.
https://youtu.be/9dphT4GMPUE
The Thursday night "NightTracks: Archive Remix" sequence often uses a 'radio tuning' motif between tracks, which reminds me of the days of my youth when I'd lie under the covers with my radio tuning slowly from one end of the dial to the other on each waveband, just to see what I could find.
-
David, the jellybeans were mesmerizing, makes me want to do a jellybean animation on Super 8.
This is two rare videos of Jimmy Hendrix playing acoustic guitar. Both obviously shot on film the first half is very high quality shot in a studio, ‘Hear My Train Comin’ on 12 string. The second half is ‘Hound Dog’, looks like it was shot at a party but the quality isn’t bad.
https://youtu.be/P701paKEMXs (https://youtu.be/P701paKEMXs)
The other end of the Blues spectrum ‘Brushy One String, Chicken in the Corn’.

Talking of rabbit holes, well I was, and as we've had a few links to strings and things, here's a rabbit hole that I went down a while ago...
Not sure how I found this first one but I've been a Philip Glass fan for a long time.
https://youtu.be/GdvD3sJh1M0 Philip Glass "Closing" Bang on a Can.
Which lead me to this
https://youtu.be/hV2-zFh3tAU Lavinia Meijer plays Philip Glass
Then to this
https://youtu.be/kaAu8gUPzSw Lavinia Meijer Divenire Ludovico Einaudi
Then to this, which I had to buy.
https://youtu.be/O-HsW142T5g Ludovico Einaudi - Nuvole Bianche with Alessia Tondo
If you don't like Glass or Einaudi, or going down rabbit holes, you might skip these.

I'm thinking "Ganga". A band name should be short, memorable, and relatively easy to pronounce. There are of course exceptions to the rule, but I want to give myself as much of a leg up as possible ;D Still entertaining other suggestions!
[edit]WAIT. Ganga is already a band name (from Denmark) :( The search continues.

Have you thought of using two words that nobody would normally put together in the same Google search?
That's how Vampire Weekend came up with their name.
That way you're guaranteed that people who are looking for your band won't have to sift through junk results.

Maybe there's something to work with there?

You basically just need a good connection.
One thing that's possible is to stream just the audio. That way you get more out of the available bandwidth.
I did a video conference with Skype last Friday and apart from the video stalling like crazy, the audio was not that bad.

That is 100% prerecorded (separately) and multitracked. The reason that the sound sucks is because they're all recording on their cellphones.

Ok, that was INCREDIBLE. I honestly don't understand how they synced 50 players like that (although I do have a slight suspicion that they added some sort of backing track starting at 2:25, because everything amps up incredibly at that point [and where's the snare drummer playing nice solid hits? the guy in the top left corner is still playing pianissimo]). Joan Jett sounded horrible and there were only 4 of them :D

Right now I'm learning KiCad because I want to build my own fuzz pedal. Once I know the software, I can pretty much design anything that I want.

That's about the coolest thing I've read all day!
-
If you want to give it a try, the program is open source.
I'm starting with the Bazz Fuss circuit as it's pretty simple. Then I'll go from there.
I hope that I have everything I need at home to build it.
-
It's weird ... I'm a techie and can write PHP and Javascript, but musical effect programming has eluded me. I tried the Line6 developer model, and gave up and sold it after like 5 minutes ;D I've watched people program MaxMSP and I can't figure it out :D Maybe now is the time to try to dive in again? :-\
-
Check in the open source world, you might find something you like.
I know LMMS is pretty darn powerful. It supports VST's and a bunch of stuff.
But on the DIY effects front, I tried with a breadboard and stuff I have at home and somehow managed only to produce a pretty glorious sound of silence...
I'll have to work some more on that fuzz... Right now I'm just substituting various parts I scavenged and crossing my fingers that it works and not start a small fire ;D
-
I can also work with electronics, no problem. I can breadboard up an effects pedal and solder it all together. I've completely rewired guitars, basses, etc. Funny thing, though, is that I have never worked with brass, which is my main instrument. Still take it to the shop for even the most minor repairs ;D
sound of silence...
Hey, it worked for Simon & Garfunkel .... ???

While you're here, I thought I'd share this. It's a first time out using a phone to record my playing, after some 30 months with the four-string thing, attempting to channel Ric Grech's bass lines in Willie Dixon's Young Fashioned Ways, as played on 'Muddy Waters: The London Sessions' from so, so long ago. I saw Grech a couple of times with Traffic during his all too short career. But then it moves to something I heard on an Anderton's Music promo video which came across as a very cool segment to stitch onto the first part.
Looks like I can't share the Flickr video so you'll have to follow the link to the page itself.
The bass is a medium-scale Chowny through a Blackstar U60. It's a bit weird how the act of recording affects the playing. I'm usually smoother on this - I need to be more patient but I'm happy enough to get here after two years+ of playing.

Hi Sandeha,
thanks for sharing, highly appreciated! I for myself being a completely newbie learning the e-guitar for about 10 month and my progress is really slow. But I love to dream about all that beautiful Jazz and Blues notes that are waiting for me.

Thanks for posting that, Christian. I didn't know of him, but ****, he's good. I'll probably never take that direction as I have zero thumb action. I'm a long time fan of Jack Casady and only discovered this little clip yesterday - I'm now mentally planning a wee duet with a pal here that will run along these lines ...
However, it's only on FB ... https://www.facebook.com/jack.casady.5/videos/10216070479771490/ (https://www.facebook.com/jack.casady.5/videos/10216070479771490/)

I missed the earlier Fiona Apple boats, only vaguely aware of her and her music. But her latest has received so much hype that I had to stop and pay attention. I'm sold. Favorites so far include these two.

I've been aware of Fiona Apple, but I never got the hype, either then or now. I suppose I'll have to check out this latest one though, just so I can talk intelligently about it to all the people who are bound to ask me if I like it.

Ok, so I'm halfway through, and although it started out kinda slow and wtf-y, I do like Rack of His and Newspaper.
More play-by-play posts coming up ;D

For Her is some awesome NOLA-style acapella jamz. I think this album is starting to grow on me.

Newspaper is also a fave of mine.
I'm trying to figure out what's going on. It reminds me of my favorite photography. The shimmering brilliance, the graininess, the lyrical gutpunches

Have you thought of using two words that nobody would normally put together in the same Google search?
That's how Vampire Weekend came up with their name.
That way you're guaranteed that people who are looking for your band won't have to sift through junk results.
EDIT:
I was brushing my teeth this morning and the words Swami Fluid popped into my mind...
Maybe there's something to work with there?
Without even reading this post, I finally came up with a name ;D and it kind of fits Francois' criteria: Saraswati Trading Company. Now that that's done, I can concentrate on actually releasing the music :D
Album is now out!!! https://saraswatitradingcompany.bandcamp.com/

Where to buy FLAC downloads???
That's the question. Any recommendations? I use 7Digital (https://uk.7digital.com/) but they don't always have FLAC versions available. I also use Bandcamp but not all artists are available. So I'm looking for other, reputable, sources.
-
Well, seems I'm the only one buying FLAC downloads.
So how do you buy your music? Maybe I should be looking at something else.
-
Full disclosure: I worked for this company for a couple of years. They have quite questionable personnel and business practices (case in point: I told them my mother had cancer so I'd have to miss a few days of work to be with her at the hospital, and they fired me. it was the week before Christmas). They frequently get accused of upsampling their products, which may be more negligence than actual malice, but given their other practices one can't really tell.
So with that glowing review, here they are: https://www.hdtracks.com/ (https://www.hdtracks.com/)
Does Tidal offer flac downloads? How about a service that offers wav/aiff downloads, would you be able to convert those after downloading? (I don't know of any store that offers wav/aiff ... maybe iTunes?)
-
Thanks for that Satish. I did a bit of research on them and that led me to another - Qobuz. So that gives me another two to look at.

I follow Emily Barker (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCK8pRIdG27av0yk7SrgIq7A) on YouTube. Each Monday she does a coffee and vinyl video. Today's featured an album by Lambchop (https://www.youtube.com/user/lambchopisaband). I'm now hooked. Try this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAi7-XKp8-k)as an example and, as it happens, the picture used is quite fitting for this forum.

On a totally opposite register, I was just suggested this by the Youtube algorithm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF5mf4LV7Jw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF5mf4LV7Jw)
The song is When is the future? by VNV Nation. For those who like the sound of electronica and the beauty of Tokyo's Shinjuku district entirely filmed in B&W, this one's for you.

About time we had some new music mentioned I think.
I sometimes think I'm completely out of touch with the current music scene and finding someone like Tori Handsley who has been around for a while, but I'd never previously heard of, just confirms that.
Her new (and maybe only) album was released a few days ago and is described on Bandcamp as "An innovative release from U.K. artist, producer and curator Tori Handsley takes a punk approach to jazz."
The full album can be previewed on Bandcamp at https://torihandsley.bandcamp.com/album/as-we-stand. I got to track three before buying it.

I'm definitely out of touch with the current music scene but this time of the year I break out the Christmas albums. I'm always looking for interesting ones like the Motown Christmas albums I got last year and the James Brown album I got a few years ago with the classic "Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto". I just found out Twisted Sister did a Christmas album, I was ready to pull the trigger on that one but my wife knocked some sense into me. This is my find for this year which is actually a fairly current album having been released in 2015.

Sometimes someone appears on the radar and you wonder how you've never heard of them. That happened to me with Kaz Hawkins. Here she's doing an Etta James number (who's name was actually Hawkins as it happens).

If the thread can start with Blue grass butchering Pink Floyd, I dont feel out of place for pointing you to Dread Zeppelin. The Led Zepplin reggae covers band fronted by the Elvis Impersonator named Tortelvis. They got their 15 minutes of fame back in the late 80's.

There sure was a lot of crazy stuff going on in the 90's!
Some of it managed to morph and survive, like The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Here's one from them before their guitarist died from an overdose.

I finally found a band that plays rock consistently right up my alley; All Them Witches!
Anyone else listened to them before? Or anything similar?? :)

I'd forgotten about this thread. I'll throw in a few semi-recent discoveries:
Pamplamoose. I'm not quite sure how to describe them, but they're good.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f45N9P2xTRo
Leo Pellegrino (Lucky Chops/Too Many Zooz) is a very energetic sax player from NYC (do you know him, Satish?). Hell of a showman, too. This is from the BBC Proms a few years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krLYZmPRtnc&t=212s
And another classic to revisit, just because. The Green Hornet theme by Al Hirt, performed by Tero Lindberg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yBxQXombCw

Bump!
There's a lot of famous cover versions of classics (e.g. Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watch Tower (Bob Dylan)) but there's lots of less well known ones too.

Mine?
Tangerine Dream - Hotel California (The Eagles) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3RpDb4hgBA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3RpDb4hgBA)

I use Ublock Origin on Firefox.
I personally am quite fond of the Toronto cover band Cybertronic Spree.
They made a pretty good version of Sweet's Ballroom Blitz (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljcgE-yl7rU)
and Heart's Barracuda (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTTT0iarzI8)
There's also Antony Vincent that did a cover of Metallica's Enter Sandman in the style of David Bowie during his Lets Dance period (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1Wn9j4sQB8) (ear worm warning)
And there's Justin Johnson who converts anything into Blues, including The Beatle's Come Together (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DE-0hnx5bY)

good to see this thread finding some new life...
Can't link at the moment, but I'll give a couple of suggestions.
Katie Pruitt's covers of Neil Young's Ohio and After the goldrush.
Another Neil Young classic, I might have mentioned before, but it deserves the attention... The Dave Matthews Band & Warren Haynes live rendition of Cortez the Killer is an absolute monster.
And finally, search youtube for Joss Stone covering Dusty's Son of a Preacher Man
-
Listening to these in my coffee break.
Cybertronic Spree. Hmm. Doesn't help that I remember the original Ballroom Blitz but Barracuda was OK. I guess making videos in their bedroom would have been an interesting project.
Antony Vincent. Why?
Justin Johnson. I'll be listening to more of him.
Katie Pruitt. Nice find. Not sure I would buy the album but I will listen to more of her. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81_iDuxGBJk&list=LL&index=2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81_iDuxGBJk&list=LL&index=2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bTWi89QkXc&list=LL&index=3 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bTWi89QkXc&list=LL&index=3)
Warren Haynes. Superb. Have to watch it in full when I have more time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYrD2SthaMU&list=LL&index=1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYrD2SthaMU&list=LL&index=1)
Joss Stone. Never been a great fan of either her or the song but enjoyed it anyway. The one time I really enjoyed Joss Stone was her rendition of People Get Ready at Ronnie Scott's with Jeff Beck but that might have something to do with the band - Jeff Beck, Tal Wilkenfeld, Vinnie Colaiuta and Jason Rebello. Great line up.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4N5o3GIGsY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4N5o3GIGsY) or if you want the complete concert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoQHnzHrqgE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoQHnzHrqgE)
Just as well we don't all like the same things. There would be just a very few artists making a huge amount of money.
Coffee break over - time for lunch.
-
And there's Justin Johnson who converts anything into Blues, including The Beatle's Come Together (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DE-0hnx5bY)
He does a great Smoke on the Water https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUVOg78QOrE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUVOg78QOrE)
-
Antony Vincent. Why?
Just for the sheer weirdness of it all :)
Besides, he really sounds an awful lot like Bowie on this one.
If you want to get your psychedelic vibe on, there's always Pink Floyd's Astronomy Domine.
First by The Claypool Lennon Delirium (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n93sunrgNvE)
And then in a more heavy metal version by Quebec's very own VoiVod (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1lZFdGXCiM)

Katie Pruitt. Nice find. Not sure I would buy the album
Changed my mind - bought it.

You know, it's time like this that I miss going to HMV.

I’m not recommending music here unless you have children. My wife recently heard this song, Three Little Fishes, and had a flashback to her childhood. She had a plastic child’s record player and these Red Raven magic mirror movie records. She tells me she wants them for her birthday, she was dead serious, so I set out looking for them. I found a stack of the records with the mirror carousel on eBay so I ordered it. Of course, the song she wanted was not in that stack and I couldn’t find it. Eventually, almost 2 months after her birthday, the only copy I could find was on Discogs, the seller wanted a lot for it. I guess this is a rare one. I could easily get it on a regular record but not the magic mirror record with the little movie printed on the label. Of course I broke down and got it.
Once I had the records and the mirror carousel I discovered that the carousel doesn’t fit on my RCA Victor phonograph. It has the tall post for stacking multiple records, the carousel needs a short post. These records are 78 rpm so a lot of modern record players won’t work. Luckily I found an old plastic Mercury phonograph that plays 33, 45 and 78 rpm. It was only $15 and it’s in mint condition.
I just uploaded a video of it. Unfortunately YouTube’s compression messes it up a little but you can still see the movie in the carousel.
https://youtu.be/p5Ul1qHZmBU (https://youtu.be/p5Ul1qHZmBU)
-
I've never seen anything like that!
It was a pretty good gimmick to have a zootrope printed on the record.
I remember a few years ago there was a set of Star Wars records that came out with a holographic animation on them. It was of a 3D tie-fighter spinning around. Pretty neat trick.
Which makes me think about something totally unrelated. When George Lucas wrote Star Wars, he probably had a lot of trouble putting on a tie... hence he became a tie-fighter ::)
This morning I was looking at a set of photos taken on some Lomo Metropolis which for some reason made me think about the old band The Church. Here's their take on Metropolis (https://youtu.be/96YYp98ye9o) and yes, it's another earworm warning ;)
-
Katie Pruitt. Nice find. Not sure I would buy the album
Changed my mind - bought it.
I can't put my finger on who she reminds me of... was thinking Courtney Barnett, but I'm not so sure. That might just be the young female singer/songwriter angle.
I've had "expectations" and "grace has a gun" on my spotify playlist for a while... she has a great vocal, and I really like the tonality of the guitar. Last time I was in HMV I picked up the album and wandered around with it for a while before putting it down and walking out with nothing... takes a lot to part me from my hard-earned nowadays... maybe next time :)
Managed to score tickets for Peter Frampton at the Albert Hall in November, which has got me going back and revisiting Humble Pie.
-
Is HMV still open in the UK?
-
Is HMV still open in the UK?
Apparently, yes. But It's years since I went into one. I buy everything on download, mostly from Bandcamp if it's available there.
-
I know all HMV locations closed down in Canada in 2017.
I personally really miss going to the old downtown Montreal store. The place was super awesome with three floors and metro access.
They had a fairly big section for imports. It was built in the 1990's and I often went there as a teenager.
At some point they moved to another place but it just wasn't the same.
-
At some point they moved to another place but it just wasn't the same.
Similar story around here. Branch closures all over. My closest is Canterbury, and that's recently downsized from a huge two floor corner location to a much smaller unit nearby.
Vastly reduced stock levels (and choice). Probably more space given over to vinyl and t-shirts than CDs now... Amazon must be laughing their t*ts off..!
-
I'm surprised anyone buys CDs these days given the ease with which downloads can be bought and with hi-res downloads available too. These days I typically buy 16-bit Flac downloads. I'm probably fooling myself thinking I can hear the difference, with my old ears, between MP3s and Flacs but I think I can. I wouldn't bother with 24-bit Flacs though. I guess it's just a convenience thing.
I sold most of my CDs years ago - just keeping a few I couldn't replace with downloads - and sold all my vinyl sometime before that.
-
Yeah, while there does seem to be a thing for vinyl and even cassette these days CDs haven't got 'old' enough for a revival?
Been a year or two since i was in a HMV and even then it was a pale shadow of former shops and mostly full of random tat (oh how I loathe 'Funko Pops'). Don't think it's there now but not been that way for a while as I've had no reason to.
There was also a big thing recently about one of the big HMVs on Oxford Street is now one of those dodgy 'American Candy Store' shops connected to tax scams and counterfeit merchandise.
I didn't want to throw out my CDs entirely, but what I did was bought storage cases where each 'page' holds eight CDs (four each side), and transferred all my CDs into two of those which take up a tiny fraction of the space. The CD boxes got thrown out. All the music is on the Mac and I set up a Raspberry Pi Zero W and Hifiberry DAC hooked up to my old stereo speakers so I play music through those speakers rather than through the teeny Mac speakers.
The only CDs I've actually bought recently have been stuff I couldn't get as data, often stuff imported from Japan when I had the disposable income!
-
Most of my CD's came from garage sales and charity shops. I figured that at .50$-1$ a disk, it's cheaper than a digital download and I get to look at the case cover.
The only thing annoying is that the remote on my CD player gave-up the ghost, so I have to press the buttons on the machine...
-
Bump.
Just a few of my latest finds. What did we do before YouTube?
Weyes Blood (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFtRq6t3jOo&list=LL&index=12)

After more than two years of cancelations and reschedules, finally got to see Bon Iver at Wembley Arena last week.
Well worth the wait. Not a fan of Taylor Swift, but the place went bananas when she made a surprise guest appearance to sing "Exile".
Also just ordered a live double album by The Dead South, who I've been watching on YouTube...
-
"Woke up this morning with a wine glass in my hand,
Who's wine? what wine? where the hell did I dine?
Must have been a dream, I don't believe where I've been"
Royal Albert Hall... that's where, to see the incomparable Peter Frampton on his final tour.
Due to health issues, he has to perform seated, but boy, can he still play.
Support was a new outfit called "Cardinal Black" - good guitar work and soulful vocal - worth a second listen in the opinion of your humble (pie?) correspondent.
-
Still kicking this old thread occasionally...
Now if there were any French Canadians amongst us :-) they might be able to explain why this guy calls himself Tire le coyote (Pull the Coyote?).
I'm a fan of Alexandra Stréliski in case you're wondering.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Whb5JOkUNt4
-
I must admit that she is a good player. Personally I'm not a big fan of Tire Le Coyote (it's actually more like shoot the coyote with a rifle).
I don't know if he took his name from the animal or from the coyote in western movies, which is the common name for the bad guy in French.
You might like Les Coyboys Fringants though. They are more folk pop in the traditional Quebec style.
Here's one of their best: Les Étoiles Filantes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InCeVCGtHak)
And as a bonus you get to see the nostalgic side of Montreal...
-
I just got this in my suggestions and it's... how can I say... interesting.
Korean Beatles anyone?
A little band called HOA, very fab four influenced with a clip inspired by the original.
https://youtu.be/YqG2ytfXG9c?si=arOCrZiXsSptn4pL

Francois' mention of folk reminded me of a French "maritime folk" outfit I stumbled upon at the Faversham Hop Festival a few years ago.
So I looked them up on youtube and found a few offerings
Sur Les Docks. Really got the crowd jumping.
https://youtu.be/OD0KOzegET0
Enjoy ;D

Somehow they remind me a lot of Soldat Louis (https://youtu.be/Upg_3ExpTNE?si=9ioigD94VHxXqaOP)
(I just hope I won't get stuck with this one after hearing the first three notes... it's an ear worm.
But back in high school, there were a lot of the kids who were fans of Bérurier Noir (https://youtu.be/f1u2B26V99g?si=CbnTNAHGJKbJFZQO)
Not my type as I was more into American and British music at the time.
Haven't heard this stuff in ages!
