Ferrania P30 -- I like it!
« on: February 03, 2020, 11:28:56 PM »
About 10 days ago I got an email from the Film Photography Project store alerting me to the fact that they had Ferrania P30 back in stock. I jumped on that (just two rolls) because I missed out earlier. I should've got more than two rolls because they're sold out again. Anyway, I read a bit about it and decided a nice overcast Sunday was a good day to shoot.

Kiev 2a with Jupiter 3 lens. Shot at box speed 80 ASA and developed in HC-110 1+63 for 12 minutes, per the instructions on the Ferrania site. I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out. This film is my new infatuation (figures it's hard to get).

I love the blacks, I like the overall tonality, which I think is aided quite a bit by the fine grain. Very nice film. I read that some people felt the shadows get blocked up but I don't find that to be the case. I think the pretty dilute HC-110 might help because I've found with other films the more I dilute HC-110 the less contrast I get, even when adding time, so I can see that it could get too contrasty with blocked up shadows if using more normal concentrations and times. Also, the negs looked beautiful and the scans needed very little tweaking at all post.

I've found my medium-slow speed B&W -- if I can find it.

I totally agree with you Peter, I enjoyed shooting the Alpha P30.  I'm holding out for 120 format on the new stuff.  I have way too much bulk 35mm black and white film to justify buying any more right now, Panatomic-X, Tri-X and PanF 50.  When I shot it I metered it at ISO 25 and developed it in beer, that's where I got my best results.

I must admit that the tonal distribution is quite nice. Much nicer than the offerings by other better known companies.

Film is the vinyl record of photography.

Kiev 2a with Jupiter 3 lens.

Nice results!  I think P30 pairs nicely with vintage glass, giving it more contrast and a fine grain too.

Good point, Jeff. The Jupiter 3 is fairly low contrast with Tri-X (which is fine for portraits) but with the P30 it sings.

Dave Bias was on the Analog Talk podcast released today and he said they're getting very close with 120 size. I love this news.  :-)

I need to keep watching for that announcement, I bet their first batch doesn't last very long.

Me too. I’ve got a Yashicamat that’s on standby.  🙂
