Shanghai 100
« on: September 12, 2018, 09:11:56 PM »
It's not chunky grain....or reticulation...it's total bleed-through the backing paper. Shanghai 100 film, shot in my favorite Holga dunked in Delta recipe caffenol for 8 minutes. If you like an artistic? mess, then this film might be for you. P.S., I didn't cover the little red window on the back of the camera. Phhffft!

The other photo is from my friend and fellow filmwaster Erin. she used the same Shanghai film in her Bronica e RTSi with no crazy bleedthough. So we are perplexed as to how I got big time bleedthrough and she did not. is it because I didn't cover my red window and she didn't have a window to cover? It is from ink on the backing paper making some kind of chemical fog by outgassing on the film...anyone have any ideas?

I'm not certain the batches of film were the same, so that probably complicates things...

If it was the window it would only affect where the window is located, not over the entire film like that.  I would guess a bad batch of backing paper.  Even Kodak has been having problems with backing paper ink leaving marks like that.

I was thinking it could be related to either pressure and heat... but in this case it didn't exactly form a diamond.
I'm sure it wasn't just light seeping through... the pattern is too uniform across the frame.

I don't know what happened here, and I'm sorry it happened to you Becky, but gee I like your image anyway.  :-)  It's just so cool!  (and I agree with the others, this couldn't be from the window only)

Thanks everyone.
Yes, after looking at it and thinking more about it, it is not the red window.
I kind of like it, but wouldn't want it to happen all the time.
It's all part of the adventure of using film!!!!
Onward!

A thing that would be fun though is it they started producing "high texture film" and regular emulsion... And most of all label it clearly on the package...
