Filmwasters Logo: Use At Will
« on: November 16, 2007, 02:57:17 PM »
Those amongst you who have listened to the recent Filmwasters netcast will know what this is all about. For those who don't...well you could alwasy go and listen to the show yourselves  :)

Here?s the tasty Filmwasters.com merch design (courtesy of Sean Rohde and Skorj) that we discussed. Use it for t-shirts, stickers etc. either on your own or in collbaoration with your fave Print on Demand (PoD) provider (CafePress, Printfection, Zazzle, Spreadshirt, etc). Upload this design, and have it applied to anything of your choice. Fun for you, and no profit for the Filmwasters, just those pesky PoD people if you go that route.

Please be aware that any re-sale for profit of products featuring this logo will be frowned upon from a great height. Filmwasters isn't about making money; it's about fun and creativity (blah, blah, blah), so feel free to put this logo to good use, but if you're selling it on then make sure you do so at cost price. Thanks

Oh, and be sure to come back here and tell the rest of us what you've done with it and where we can find it.

Yep, saw it on the podcast page.
Thought it was rather funny that you felt the need to say it was safety film :)
I'm pretty sure people don't even know why it was called safety film in the first place!

Somehow, I think it's the perfect time to inundate this post with useless trivia :)
Back in the early days of photography, when the move from glass plates to film started to happen, manufacturers needed a flexible and stable support on which to lay down the emulsion. They settled on using cellulose film. This had the all the required characteristics... except one they didn't anticipate. Cellulose is one of those rare products which, when ignited, can't be put out! Some time later, chemists invented acetate. This proved to be much more stable, thus it was decided to switch from a cellulose base to an acetate base. To indicate this, these films were labeled "safety film" and proved to be a much more coherent choice. Nowadays, all films are "safety film" using either an acetate or polyester base. The only products that I know of which still use cellulose are ping-pong balls and some kitchen sponges... so there isn't any risk of burning down the house by using film :)

I just hope this wasn't another one of my ever slightly boring interludes...

Erm...not sure there's a nice way to say this, so I won't  ;D :D ;) Seriously though, thanks for the history lesson; I'm a big fan of trivia/factoids etc. and when it's photography-related it's even better.

I think the reason 'Safety Film' is included in the design is that Skorj and Sean based it very specifically on an old film box (an old Fuji one maybe?), so I'm guessing 'Safety Film' was written in that position on the original.

I forgot to add that cellulose is an unstable molecule that degrades rapidly if not kept in perfect levels of humidity and temperature...

I kept wondering why green... not realising that Fuji was green...
I know it sounds dumb, but I just didn't make the link :)

Film companies do change their company colors from time to time. Kodak went through 3 or 4 different yellows!

And while going through my stash of really old emulsion, I've found some orange and blue Agfa Ansco Plenachrome (PB20 format, 620 compatible, expired in 1945 )... things change...

I don't know why trivia is so much fun... I'm just starting to figure out why I've sometimes been called the Information  A.T.M. :)

Hey Ed

I took you at your word, but couldn't help messing with the colours a little for this pop-art version. (Hope Skorj and other designers don't mind)
I think I have enough T-shirts to see me through the week now.  :)

Great stuff, Don. Wow! I'm sure Sean and Skj will be OK with it.

 :D

BTW, is there any chance you can either mail me or send me a link to a high res version of your "It's Called Film" design as we'd like to get it linked to from the podcast page.

Might be a good idea. The only problem comes with the onward distribution when they get to the UK and also we'll get hit by Customs because the order value will be high. It's a definite problem though. Don't think there are any good PoD firms in the UK. I think Spreadshirt has a European operation, but their print quality is best described as 'iron on' based on the one example I've seen from a friend.

There must be a PoD in the UK? Surely? Too wet perhaps for the inks to dry?

Zazzle is over the ditch in the Fatherland me thinks. That be closer? Skj.

I'm not sure their is.  I've been looking at PoD for something else recently and there don't seem to be a huge number of UK options for anything like this.  I was actually looking at books where US based outfits the likes of lulu seem to be the only way to get it done at low cost.

Of course it could be done the old fashioned way by getting some screen printing guy to knock up a small batch?  Ed must have some contacts in that arena following all those years of Sink/Big Ray cleaning rags T-shirts.  ;)

Al, as you know my silk-screening days are long behind me, but I think one of my old t-shirt contacts is still at large doing shirts. Not sure about small runs etc., but I'll gerrin touch with him and see what I can do. I honestly don't think there's a PoD option in the UK.

BTW, if you're looking to get a book printed the smart money is on Blurb.com as the quality option.

With the pound so ridiculously strong against the dollar at the moment it would almost certainly be cheaper to get it done in the US, even bearing in mind shipping charges. Customs will probably only start charging if you're receiving three or more shirts.

A friend of mine uses these guys: http://brunettotshirts.com/ but that might be a bit overkill for the sort of small run FW would probably require...

David makes an excellent point re exchange rates. My experience with customs (from back when I bought cameras weekly on evilBay is that the limits are set VERY low indeed before you are liable for charges (+ handling fees + VAT). I think it's either GBP14 or USD40...either way it's risky.

It's a job I've been volunteered for, some family artist watercolours to be put in a book for Christmas.  As it's not photos, lulu looked the best bet with matte paper, and I'm working to a budget, lulu was a fair bit cheaper.  I'm hoping the quality will still be adequate, I've only ever seen one PoD product (a calendar from lulu) and that was OK.  Blurb does look like the best bet for quality photo work.

A couple of useful lulu vs blurb comparison articles for anyone else who's embarking on this for the first time like I am!
