Topic: What camera is this?

The BBC recently updated their weather web page and this appeared. I keep looking at it but still haven't been able to figure it out. That looks like an M42 lens - I think?

My first impulse was to say "it's an Olympus" because the bottom plate reminded me of my Olympus 35RC very much (the piece that's "cut out" as well as the opening mechanism; see http://www.kenrockwell.com/olympus/35rc.htm). However, when I looked at the Olympus OMs, none of them seems to fit the bottom plate. I'm at a loss here. Now I'm as curious as you are about which model and make it is.

EDIT: The design reminds me of a beginning to mid eighties SLR like the Canon AE-1.

Wow, spot on! That was quick, that must be some sort of Filmwasters record. I don't feel too bad for not getting it now, I don't think I've ever clapped eyes on one.

I have a konica t2 autoreflex in a cupboard. I'll take it out and check if we have a confirmation

Case solved, misery out.  Seriously, this was a fun, if short-lived thread.

Somewhat less seriously:  It’s no wonder that Konica had to stop making SLRs.  What were they thinking, designing out the red battery-check button in the T3?

On the T3 the battery check button is built-in with the shutter locking switch. When the camera is off, you just press the lock button to the "even more off" position to check the batteries.

But the bad thing is that they take those annoying mercury cells. I tried using wein cells instead but the meter definitely knows the difference and the exposure is several stops off.

That's very odd. The difference between a mercury cell and a Weincell is 0,04-0,1 V if I remember correctly. Are you sure that the meter doesn't just need a recalibration? I've had great results with 675 hearing aid cells (zinc air) in a number of camera that originally needed mercury cells. No need to spend much money on Weincells, some aluminium foil and the 675 work really well.

No, the meter is fine, it's just that sensitive to voltage. When I got the camera it had some Mercury cells and exposure was spot on. When the batteries died, it some wein cells for it. Since they are slightly thicker than the original cells, I had to Dremel out a bit of the battery cover. And when I used them, exposure was completely off. When those cells died, I got some more but this time have them more time to breathe before putting them in. Same result. And when these died, I managed to find some mercury cells in an old camera store. I put them in the camera and the exposure was back to normal....

If I ever get around to fixing the few issues it has (the exposure counter needs a drop of oil) I might try and make an adapter for silver cells and recalibrate the whole thing....
