Black and White Photography Magazine
« on: November 08, 2007, 01:33:58 PM »
Oh dear. In the first main article and I am met by a special box entitled "Top Tips for Better Black and White" and some rather uninspiring images. P. 50 and in walks a 1980's glamour shot. I know it's early days and someone new wants to make a mark, but let's hope it doesn't degenerate into the guff you get in other mags.

The advert for the Canon on the inside cover made me howl, and not in an amusing way: 'I gaze at the sunset with the woman I love and think F8 at 1/250. You know when you're ready'. For what? A trip to couple counselling?

Half the December issue seems to have been (badly) written by the new editor - including the "advertising feature" - and liberally sprinkled with dodgy shots of models. The "Art of Seeing" feature in particular is a cavalcade of cliches and camera-club-lite instructions for what a photograph "should be" complete with appalling examples, all written with all the grace and elan of a 14 year old's English homework.

Oooooh, I was just about to send in my subscription renewal. But since there's a new editor, I think I'll wait to see this new issue first. I won't be interested anymore if it just becomes like other photography magazines: Which is-- a masturbatory aid for middle-aged men whose wives won't let them buy Playboy.

Thanks!

Andrea.

I agree that things don't look so good - they didn't even get Andrew Sanderson's picci right!. The Editor [on APUG] says the December issue will be good - less of the ad feature perhaps, pages in the right order and everything. I certainly hope so otherwise I shall be urging Ailsa to start something new. Again

blimey, ive not had chnace for a proper read just yet, on flip side the gallery (albeit) 2 shots by John Conn are good, as is the  stuff by dan wood, micheal hoppen  & josef Hoflehner.

need to read the articles...or not as the case may be.

I use to have a fair daily commute and ended up subscribing to AP as it filled a day,   I recently stopped that as it just got ridiculous, nothing creative, artistic or worth reading...please dont tell me B&W is going the same way......

It may take them a while to get their shit together... Or, they may just start a slow slide into oblivion. Still, if they are retitling `Loaded - Black and White`, they'll be sure to make a mint. Skj.

I've been reading this mag for the last three or four years, and even though i hate making comments like this, I'm not a major fan of the new editor either...

Obviously, it is a big change and they will need some time to sort stuff out, but i do hope they develop this new direction of theirs carefully...

having worked in the publishing industry, it can be pretty sad when new editors/management take over. the trend is usually 'more modern, cleaner look, out with the old, etc.'. i can see very much the focus on digital increasing and film being pushed back. people get paid to look at the market and wherever the money is, that's usually where magazines head...just to end up blending in with the rest of the similar mags.

So that's why I haven't bought a single magazine in the last 6 months!!!

Francois - I know what you mean! This is actually one of two magazines i actually buy now.  (The other being BJP...)

I agree, the magazine has to follow the money - i don't blame them at all, i even remember when they first introduced it into the mag - the problem is that it could degenerate into a bunch of stuff about digital that you could probably find on the net anyway, although i imagine that will take a while...

I hope it stays true to film...
