Beer - London: Who's Up For Some?
« on: April 04, 2016, 08:05:23 PM »
It seems like an eternity since we had an evening meet-up in London. The last one was in the depths of the winter and the weather didn't help tempt many of us out...and, those of us who were there learned the lesson that we need to book a table if we intend to eat as well as quaff.

Few of us live in the centre of London and we usually need a little time to organise things. Therefore, to allow a bit of time to plan ahead, what about meeting up one evening during the week commencing 25th April?

Venue - I suggest our adopted "home" at the Globe on corner of Moorgate and London Wall as it's easy to find, right next to a tube station and the beer and food is great.

All are welcome.

If you'd like to attend, please register your interest below and say which, if any, night(s) you can't make.  Obviously, the intention is to be as inclusive as possible but the evening when most can attend will be the winner...!!

Hope a goodly number are able to attend.  We'll make a call on Friday 15th April.

I can see this getting complicated already - as it stands I can make any day except Tuesday.

Mondays and Tuesdays are the only days I can make.

Nigel: of course it's going to be complicated  ;)

So far, Monday is the day.  What could be simpler?

It'd be great if Monday was workable for those who haven't been able to respond yet.....

Have one for me!  All I generally get is wine or hard cider.  I work as an Associate Winemaker at local winery and generally can have more wine (or cider) than I can possible drink.
I was born with nothing and have manged to keep most of it.

I'm hopefully working in London that week.
So I say tentatively I'll make it and put some faces to the names I see so regularly.

Okay then, that's that settled:

Monday 25th April 2016
Venue: The Globe: http://www.nicholsonspubs.co.uk/restaurants/london/theglobemoorgatelondon
Time: Anytime after 6pm?

Incidentally, if anyone's up for a quick photo-wander in the City from 5pm onwards, please PM me or register interest here.  Meet on Leadenhall Street outside Lloyd's as that's an easy stroll to Moorgate in time for the beer..... :o

Sadly, I'm going to have to bow out of this meet up as a hastily rescheduled band rehearsal now has me driving from South London to Colchester for the evening to work on my tinnitus.

Boo!

I hope you have a great evening; sorry to bail at such short notice.

That's a bit of a bugger, eh?  Still, there's 3, maybe 4, of us who are likely to be there (possibly + Lara).  Enough for a quorum!  ;)

When / where are you playing next, Ed? Do you allow "Ross Halfin wannabes" into your practice / recording sessions / gigs? I only live a few miles down the road from Colchester and I've been looking for an opportunity to shoot a band or two without having to scrap it out with the bouncers....

Paul, the Colchester connection is very much a one-off I'm afraid. We'd normally be rehearsing in London somewhere, but we ended up in Colchester because it's closer to London than Ipswich....which is where half of the band will be that week.

No worries. Maybe catch a gig sometime.

All.

Looks like Irv B and I might be getting together around 5pm near Crosswall / Lloyd's Avenue (EC3) with a view to sauntering over to The Globe by 6:30pm-ish.  Any takers, meet outside a pub called The Cheshire Cheese under the railway arch where Crosswall meets Crutched Friars / Llody's Avenue around 5:15pm.  PM me if you want my mobile number.

Otherwise, hope to see you all at The Globe around 6:30

Regards, Paul.

Sorry guys, I'm not going to make it either!

I'd planned ahead and arranged a meeting in Pall Mall so I could hang around and get there in time for the photo walk. However I now have to be in Taunton tomorrow morning!  :o So I'm going to have to drive down tonight - the best laid plans and all that!

Have a great time and a beer for me! See you at Photographica!

Sorry to hear that, Nigel. Photographica's not far away.....

So, that leaves Jon Butler, David (Zapsnaps), Irv B, myself and, hopefully, Charles Binns.  Any others who can make it are always welcome.  We'll be at The Globe by 18:30 - probably stood outside but, if not, I'm the big bloke with the (very) grey crew cut / glasses and a black Billingham Haldley slung over my shoulder....

Rather late now - sorry, I've been travelling - but we had a good chat over a beer the other night.

I mentioned two travel writers who took cracking snaps & was asked to put their names up here.

They are Sir Wilfred Thesiger  https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=wilfred+thesiger&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=951&site=webhp&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwizn8CyndfMAhUhIsAKHdB8DV0QiR4IhgE

and Bruce Chatwin  https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=bruce+chatwin&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=951&site=webhp&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwiU_Zr0ndfMAhVFFMAKHcH-DJsQiR4IhgE

For my money, Sir Wil was a classic old school travel writer, who just happened to lug a Leica with him on his travels, to record things for his own benefit, rather than to publish. Chatwin took OK B&W photos, but for me they were pretty unexceptional. Then he discovered colour and his style and way of seeing changed, literally, after the first roll of film. I think his colour work is as outstanding in its way, as Thesiger's was classical, decades before. Both are well worth reading, as well as looking at the pretty pictures.

What? For all that cash, the M7 doesn't take years/kilos off the sitter?! Perhaps it needs a service. Or more likely, I need to diet more aggressively. Or drink less beer. That might have something to do with it.

It's probably the photographer at fault.  Not you or the camera.  If he was worth his salt you and Irv would look like George Clooney and Jamie Foxx in that picture. ;)
