Film summary page?
« on: January 21, 2016, 04:00:00 AM »
Hello

Just an idea and can't find anything like this online, but it would be very useful to have a page that describes all the available film. Sounds too onerous?

Am thinking a google doc or similar.

I could write about my very limited experience with:

Kodak ColourPlus 200
Agfa Vista 400
Ilford XP2

I'd like to learn more about cheap film by Fuji, like their C200.

Outside of a specialized technical document written by the people who design and produce the film, I think it's too subjective to be useful. Everyone has their own preferences, and more confusing, their own evaluation criteria. It's fine to write about it, but the idea that some sort of comprehensive database of useful information - as opposed to just a bunch of opinions - could be created is extremely optimistic at best.

Better to spend you time buying some of the film you want to know about and shooting it yourself.
Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.

If you look through the old posts on the forum, skorj had made a chart like that.

Agreed. If there is a piece of equipment or a type of film I am interested in, I head on over to Flickr and look for a group dedicated to it (there probably is one). Then I look at photos and check out the technical info if any. I also look through the discussions to see if people love it, hate it, have recurring problems, have work-arounds, etc. The community is the database and google is the index (<search-term> site:flickr.com). Assembling information all on one page (or even one site) is a thing of the past. When you are talking about something like photo film, the topic is too vast to contain. Fortunately, we also have a good community here that is not too uptight to answer the same questions time and again or direct people to the answers.

Actually this website is great and just what I was after. http://curatingcuteness.com look at the film guide. She has a wide variety of film shots she has taken.

The Lomography community tags by film type also. That might be a better bet to see how the film looks in different people's hands.
