Bulk loading headaches
« on: September 17, 2015, 09:45:20 PM »
For the last few months I really got into bulk  loading since it comes out more economical and I feel better pocket wise when I shoot at random.

Today I learned one thing this is the second time it's  happened the first one  happened on my Olympus OM 1 and out today on my Leica m6. I learned instead of using Magic Tape or scotch tape I should use gaffers tape since it stronger and it won't snap. On the om1, I successfully retreated my film and developed it and it came out fine. But on the m6  I had  more difficult time since the tape stuck to the shutter curtain and I have no choice but to open the changing bag to remove the tape without damaging the curtain. Now I'm not sure if any of my exposures are going to come out or they're all ruined. I'll find out tonight with a cold beer when I develop it.

I actually use masking tape but I make sure the tape is on both sides of the film.
It hasn't let me down so far. I also used electrical tape in the same manner.

I'm not sure if I had it on both sides. I rolled up a few rolls are ready and I'm not sure if tape them both side. I guess once I get up to the 30 count I should advanced slowly to the next frame so I don't snap it again.

Thing is, with tape on only one side it can simply roll off the spool. With tape on both sides, it really prevents unrolling by redirecting the pulling direction in a direction that can't go nowhere.

Oh that makes sense.

Thanks.

Surprisingly it only looks like about 10 or 12 exposures got ruined but the rest seems fine I'll wait to tomorrow to scan them.

how do you guys fit the tape? I usually do like this with one piece around the spool and let the film have a little playroom against the spool but still within the area of the light shields

I've only had troubles when realoading with the same bit of tape repeatedly and in combination with summer heat

For the price of tape, I just use it once.

I always use new tape, I have some artists tape. I got it from FPP who knows how long ago.

I tape like jonas does. Both sides. Ive only had one snap, and thats because I was shooting in -30c.

I have successfully retrieved broken film from an M body. It's not easy but can be done with some forceps in a dark bag. Just be patient.

To make things easier, I usually apply one tape on one side, fold the film spool at a sharp angle and apply a second bit of tape to the other side.
I also usually take the wide masking tape and cut two bits to the right width so that I get maximum surface adhesion.

I just stick them on the side of the counter by a corner until I'm ready.

I use the notch in the spool, but I cut the film long, then tape that down to the emulsion side with a thin cloth tape (like you'd use for a gauze bandage). Since I started doing that, no issues.

But now I've gone and jinxed it.

Actually I have seen this tape fixing for portra and ektar canisters too.
Seems there is a machine for it!
I have noted that day it looks like handmade thing.
