New ONDU Kickstart
« on: May 18, 2015, 08:20:26 AM »
The new and improved MKII versions now on Kickstarter

As far as I can see these are useful improvements to the existing design. And a couple of new formats. I can't remember there being a curved plan 6x17, a 5x7, a trifocus 4x5, or an 8x10 sheet film version last time around.

I might go for a 6x12 multiformat this time.

I would too, but I already have one I made myself. I also already have an ONDU 6x6 MKI, and Vermeer 6x17 curved film plane, and a DIY 6x24 curved film plane camera. 6x9 and 6x12 would be nice.

Brilliant.

I think these people really deserve any and all success in their endeavours. The last time around, the major issue was not if they delivered, but when. The Kickstart was so successful they really had their hands full fulfilling the deliveries. But deliver they did, and only marginally delayed.

Oooh, I think I'm going to get a 6x6. I got a 135 last time and I really like it, though my main complaint is that it's still really hard to advance and rewind, and the film will get scratched as a result. For that reason, I haven't used it as much as I thought, but I'm going to try a few fixes for it so I can use it more often.

After the first one, I was kicking myself (*groan* no pun intended!) for not getting the 6x6 so now's my chance :)

Yes, I am a backer there too, and they have no end of trouble. Admittedly a more complex and risky project.

Aha, and I see these are some of the exact issues they have addressed (at least in the 120 - not sure about the 135):

"The 120mm cameras now run much smoother while winding, thanks to a guide pin that holds the film in place. This alleviates the tension and prevents scratches on the film. The viewing ports for the 120mm film have also been enlarged and chamfered to make frame counting a breeze!"

I have the 6x6, and just love it. See my Jomfruland - one subject - one roll essay for the last roll that went through it a few weeks back.

I agree, it is easy to scratch the film. But one of the improvements on the new version is meant to mitigate that.

P.s. I have avoided scratches on my old one by two handed winding, it helps.

Oh yeah, those trees and the beach? I just adored those pictures!

I've been doing the two-hand winding as well on the 135. I'm also going to try a piece of tape on the surfaces that the film touches to protect it from the wood. I just put another roll through and am bringing it to the lab today, so I'll see if I did any better avoiding scratches this time.

Aaaaaaand, I just pledged. The 6x6 is mine  ;D

For the film scratches, it might be worth adding some slippery low friction tape.
I had a similar problem with my hand made 6x14 but only on the edges. In the end I just scraped a lot of candle wax on the rails and that took care of the problem.

I'm considering pledging for the 135 pocket. I've never tried my hand at pinhole before, but I love the results. This seems like an easy way for me to get into it without having to make something by hand (which never ends well for me).

OPTION 8: I've been thinking about instant film, too. I have a plan. Load a single sheet of the Polaroid or Impossible film into a specially modified 5x4 holder so the Pola is held centrally in the frame. Expose in the Ondu. Unload the slide in a changing bag and load it into the appropriate Polaroid camera. Either closing the camera or pressing the exposure button (still in the bag) will send the film through the rollers and there you are. I hope... But I can't see why it wouldnt work.

And this is also the first kickstarter I finance!

When I showed it to mom, she said "Since it's your birthday, I'm paying half of it!"

So yeah, I got an earlybird 6x6 coming my way... quite happy :)

Happy Birthday Francois!

If it weren't for the logistics involved it would be cool to have a Filmwasters Ondu Camera Photowalk once we all receive our cameras. I suppose we'll have to go it on our own and be happy with a thread of resulting images.

We could sort of synchronize it, or at least set a day after we've all gotten our cameras when we'll all take some shots. Instead of an annual Worldwide Pinhole Day, we could have an Annual Filmwasters ONDU Pinhole Day :D

You can't, in theory. Kickstarter doesn't allow it. So you are stuck with the bundles they make, OR you pledge your primary reward, and add the sum for the second camera when going to payment. Then mail Elvis and ask him if he can fulfill them both. If he doesn't respond with a positive answer, you still have 28 days to adjust your pledge, pledged amount etc.

Apparently Zero Imaging have been posting on social media suggesting that the people at ONDU have been stealing all their ideas. The pinhole fitting, the three section 5x4 to name a few. I remember they did the same with NOON and Bob Rigby pinhole camera's...

They'll have to sue an awful lot of people, because there are just so many ways to build a pinhole camera. It's not exactly rocket science.

I'd jump at one of these if I could use an instant back with any of them. As it is, I'll have to refrain from getting involved; much as I'd love to. Am so glad so many of you were able to support the campaign though. Very cool!

Stretch goals and Pictures from the ONDURAMA 6x17!
Posted by ONDU

Hi photon catchers, some exciting news here! We still have 24 days left on our campaign and you can contribute reaching the new goals by pressing the almighty share button, to get the word out to as many people that have been waiting for that elusive ONDU their whole lives:)

We are now already past the $60,000 mark and effectively the ONDU T-shits and Hoodies are now available as a reward too! They are available from sizes S to XL in blue and brown color!

If we reach the $80,000 mark we will add extra laser markings on the cameras for ease of vertical composing.

A lot of people asked us if we will make the 4x5" cameras compatible with the Polaroid 545 Holder, we thought about that, called some numbers, made some prototypes and it works! So the $100,000 mark will upgrade all 4x5" cameras to accept the Polaroid back!

Some of you expressed the wish to have a dual pinhole medium format camera. The $120,000 will give the camera models, 6x9, 6x12 and 6x17 the option to order them with a dual pinhole and shutter. This will enable you to shot amazing pictures with a 1/3 shift above or bellow. Why is this so nice you ask, well it offers you to take pictures with the horizon on the upper or lower 1/3 of the image. Remember those basics of photo composing?

And to make those super steady exposures with style, we'll bring you a range of ONDU tripods, yes that's right, we are about to start creating tripods that match your cameras! $140,000 mark will enable us to do prepare the manufacturing process for these beauties! And they will be ready for preorder after the campaign ends via our website.

Let's look at some ONDURAMA's now!

We talked about some sample pictures of the ONDU 6x17 well as promised, we took the ONDURAMA on a stroll trough the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana! It was actually quite an experience with more time spent talking about the camera than taking pictures, the tourists were all over it:)

We are super excited to present you with a project that we immediately backed, that our friends and colleagues at ZuckerIm have been working on - the GEKKOPOD! Click here to check out their campaign! Don't they make a lovely couple with the ONDU?

If you are interested in other cool photography gadgets on Kickstarter check out Radian. This team is making a time lapse device that is wirelessly programmed from your phone and makes advanced time-lapse accessible to photographers of all levels. It has some pretty cool feature as well like image preview on your phone and complete camera control (shutter speed, aperture, and ISO). Check out their campaign here!

And another Slovenian Kickstarter project that you should know, called LEANO! it's a simple lightweight comfortable chair that also uses Slovenian wood! We supported LEANO the moment we saw it, and now LEANO will support our backs for years to come!
