WEEKEND December 5th - 7th
« on: December 04, 2014, 08:35:06 PM »
It's Friday morning in Saipan, "Where Americas Day Begins", so this is a rare opportunity for me to start the weekend thread.  Sorry, no pictures from Saipan yet, but don't worry I will bore you with them in the next few weeks.  These are some objects from home with my Mamiya C3 with Mamiya-Sekor 1:2.8 80mm lens using Kodak Ektar 100.

About as close as I could focus.

I'm having a really hard time deciding between two photos this week. I'm going to try to stick with my self-imposed one photo rule - I really am - but it's difficult. Voigtländer Perkeo II, Fomapan 200@100, semi-stand in Caffenol C-L.

It's a Color Skopar (Tessar formula) 80/3.5, shot at f/4 and focused almost as close as possible. It doesn't always produce that sort of OOF look, but in this case the light, busy background combined with the vignette it produces at large apertures made it happen.

Our contract with the U.S. EPA covers the Pacific Territories.  I've been working out here off and on for a few years now, mostly to clean-up the power plants.  They made quite a mess with PCB's, lube oil and fuel oil.  If we finish early I'll get more time to waste film, I did bring the Rolleiflex and 4 rolls of Ektar.  I have already shot 35mm and 8mm here on other trips.

BAC: You certainly have some nice toys

Thanks Zapsnaps, I've been using and collecting 8mm cameras for years and did go a bit overboard, kind of like I'm doing with still cameras now.  I used the tube tester to repair a few old radios, picked it up cheap at a garage sale.

Thanks Mike and Mcduff, I do shoot with it but not as often as I should.  The problem with that camera is it's not very portable, I have some very nice cameras that are much smaller and easier to take on trips.  That is more of a tripod camera.

I've got 5 rolls of color for developing that I'm hoping to get done and scanned today and tomorrow. If there's nothing good on 5 rolls of film, I don't deserve a camera anymore ;)

But I had to say, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, Dave is just killing it with these pond shots! I could stare at that rowboat for hours.

And Fluminian's water pup shot gives me a big smile too  :D

Inspired by Ezzie's stuff last month I borrowed my daughter's instax. It is a lot of fun.

Fuji Instax 3
by mcduff!, on Flickr

The frames on this pack of film (random neon) more often than not worked with the images that happened to be recorded on them.

BTW, I had a hell of a time with Newton's rings. I did not want to prop the images a bit of the screen as I wanted to scan the whole frame. Ezzie (or other instant users) any suggestions (other than buying a nice expensive and big sheet of anti-newton glass)??

Oh yeah, these can definitely be addictive.
As for Newton's rings, using AN glass will reduce contrast a bit, something we definitely don't want.
But I had an idea... use a sheet of very thin plexiglass with a window cut in its center the exact same size as the print image.
If all the dimensions are exact (including the exterior), you should get a perfect image while keeping the frame visible...
Maybe get it laser cut at Ponoko...

Very nice Sandeha, Manuel, Dave and Don

@Don: I too have had trouble with Newton rings when scanning Instax. I took black cardboard 1mm thick (or so) cut to the size of the scanner bed. Cut out frames ever so slightly smaller than the Instax prints. Then cut another sheet, same size and cut out frames to the size of the prints (matching placment to the first sheet) and glued them together. That way I can drop the prints into shallow trays elevated 1mm above the bed. Added another sheet of white cardboard to flip over the top when all trays loaded. Not perfected yet, need to make a better effort of it, but it has potential.

My contribution this week, pack film instant this time. Need time to re-adapt to regular film evidently. FP100C from the DUO, semi macro.

Some really nice work on this thread so far.

I recently acquired an Olympus OM2n and couple of lenses and had taken it with me on a business trip to see if I could spot something worth shooting.  This was from the first "test" roll taken. I was in an hotel room, out of town / business park location, mid-week, cold and miserable with the square root of bugger all to do - so I decided to try to make a photo out of nothing.

Olympus OM2n, Zuiko Auto-S 50mm f1.4, Kodak Portra 400.

Thanks a lot for the kind comments!

Love the blurryness of Sandeha's shot, the colour combination in mcduff's and the subject and deapth of field in Ezzie's shot.
Dave's boat is also fantastic. Hope to see more pond shots coming.

These are from our mini-Filmwasters meet at the London Olympic Park. It was a classically London winters day with an almost uniform grey sky which was a little drab. These from my Hassy, Portra 400.

Loads of inspiring stuff (again) this weekend.
The weekend threads never fail to impress, and it's a real pleasure to share this space with such a talented bunch...

Really tough to pick a favourite from the posts so far. Dave's pond series is really drawing me in... Sandeha's lovely soft nude study... Manuel's trees... Fluminian's wet dog... Everything coming out of the Olympic park meet... Superb stuff all..!

My effort this week is the Blackfriars (Dominican) Priory, by the River Stour in Canterbury.
