You can always tell when Christmas is approaching. In early October, supermarkets and department stores begin stocking their shelves with things no-one in their right minds would buy at any other time of year, the London Underground becomes so packed it's virtually impossible to get on or off the Central Line anywhere between Holborn and Bond Street and the TV schedules are released - enticing us to watch the umpteenth re-run of the "Only Fools and Horses" Christmas specials, "Jason and the Argonauts" and "Oliver". By mid-November, you may even spot the odd Easter Egg in the shops.

All this aside, most of us can look forward to receiving presents from our kith and kin. Sometimes a nice surprise but often, something we've been after all year - or even longer - and we've put on our wish list.

So, what photography-themed things are we all hoping to receive this year?

(Incidentally, I'm not being Christian-centric. Anyone of any denomination is very welcome to join in - even if your festivities aren't due for a while yet).

This is the time of year I avoid shopping malls or anywhere there are Holiday crowds. The only thing I want is to get some great shots of family and friends. I will likely be using my View-Master camera, and 8mm cine camera and Polaroid Pack film.

1. Some quality time to spend thinking about what I want to do (photographically) and then the time to actually do it - without distractions.

2. Ragnar Axelsson's "Faces of the North" (it's on order)

3. Some comfy, waterproof walking shoes.

Any (or all) of the above would be fantastic.

This year is me waiting for some New 55 film under my tree.

Some more chrome films and a E6 kit. That would be awesome.

Looking forward taking family photos and for snow.

Get my Mojo back. After back surgery a few weeks ago I am out of whack, looking forward to getting back on my feet.

And as I tell my my children every X-mas, when they want to know what I want from St. Nicholas, "Well behaved children", which doesn't go down well.

I’ve driven my long suffering wife mad with my particular lists so often that I’ve opted to not give her one this year (which might drive her more mad). But like Peter and Bryan above, more time and the chance to enjoy family & friends is what I’m aiming for this holiday season.

However, saying that, I think a View master camera (which I didn’t know existed) under the tree sounds awesome…

There are a few varieties, these are the two I have:

View-Master Stereo Color (Mark II) by bac1967, on Flickr

View-Master Personal Stereo Camera by bac1967, on Flickr

The second one is the best but it only takes bulbs for flash. The Mark II does have X and M flash. You will also need a View-Master film cutter and blank reels. There is also a Soviet camera that I don't know much about. I'm always on the hunt for blank reels and flash bulbs but I have a pretty good stash now.

They are a bit of a pain at first but once you get the hang of it it's not bad. There are instructions that you need to follow to get them in the correct direction. This is a great resource for View-Master:

I take a very practical approach to ensuring I get what I want for Xmas - basically I buy the item then give it to my wife to wrap it up.

This year I have already won an eBay auction for a Fuji GA645Zi at a reasonable price and it's gone in the Xmas pile. I've learnt from previous experience though to run a film through straight after purchase in case you need to send it back.

A relevant (to my education) job would be nice, then a boss who understands the need to wander off with a camera every now an then, a ticket by sea to the Faroe islands to see where parts of the family comes from would be nice. That and a wet printing workshop and some bravery pills so I can finish a cupel of projects I`m working on but feel is a bit to personal to publish.

I am really trying to fight the old Gear Acquisition Syndrome. Given I was at an awesome camera show and came away from it with only film and a camera bag for my daughter, I think I am doing OK.

I am trying to fight off the desire for a TLR. Having a good camera that shoots square format is the main cause for this desire (maybe I should just shoot with my danged holga!!). I still want a 1.9 lens for my M645 but feel that I need to further explore my Macro 80mm before one of these arrives in the house.

The only thing I really want these days is strong but light tripod. Probably a travel tripod, as it needs to be portaged and I am lazy

I will second what limr said, I would love to get a winning powerball ticket. Then I could have a house with a darkroom. But while I'm waiting for that dream to come true, the only thing I want for the holidays is the reissue of Henri Cartier Bresson's The Decisive Moment. I've got enough gear already, but wouldn't say no to a decent Nikon with a 50mm lens.

I'd be happy if I were able to clean out the spare room so that it's at least empty. And while we're at it, some money to buy the supplies to turn it into a darkroom.

I have a room in the cellar like that. Been working at clearing it out in readiness for a darkroom for 9 years, but somehow it fills up again with the other household members' paraphernalia in no time.

I'm thinking either a Rolleiflex or a Yashica Mat before I send my Rolleicord to a CLA - but I am also tempted to get one of those nicely made panoramic pinhole cameras - now that I have means to enlarge long negs - can't decide between 6x12 - 6x14 - 6x17 formats though..

Right now, a lens for the Minolta Dynax 5 is what I'm craving the most. As I don't want to buy anything right now, I keep researching all the possible options. If I find the cash I'll see if the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art works on that camera, otherwise I'll just go for a cheap 50mm.

What a lovely little book. Made even more so for me, by the half dozen or so pictures from my home town. Immediately recognisable and bringing memories flooding back, especially the little shop that I lived opposite through the entire 1990s.

Since Polaroids are so small and usually have a border that is worth seeing, I tend to just stick a small square of foam core on the back and mount them shadow style in a thick frame. Easy to do and looks so professional.

You'll enjoy The Non-Conformists, the book is well printed and the images are wonderful. For some reason it is the only book by Parr in the public library here (capital city of an english speaking G8 country...) but I'm glad they at least have this one.

jack - I'd use a copy though and not the original else it'll fade... unless you have a frame with special UV glass etc...
