Old envelopes
« on: October 25, 2014, 09:06:13 PM »
Today, I went to a garage sale and got a bunch of really old film processing envelopes.
I thought you might enjoy their graphical qualities so I started scanning them.

Enjoy :)

What I wonder is why they stopped doing stuff like this?

This one's rather funny because they offered a hand coloring option, something you don't think ever existed. You can even change the color of the drapes if you want :)

Those are great. A roll of ANSCO film I bought at the camera show had a nice metal outer canister and a self-sticking label inside. The canister is just a bit bigger than a modern one. You were supposed to cram wrap the film with some cash into the canister and fill out the label and wrap it around the canister (using the label to seal the canister). I will take a pic.

I did not know you could mail such a small and difficult package. It would be marginally better than mailing a large marble!

Well, the postal service is not what it used to be... but you can still mail a coconut with just a label stuck to it (they tested it on Mythbusters).

Lets just say I'd really love to see that can! I'm expecting a round tube a bit like the old aspirin and alka-seltzer tubes...

Hi Francois

Here is the can and the label that you are supposed to wrap around it once you have put your $1.60 in the tube for processing  ;)

The can is a fair bit bigger than a normal cannister (not how much room there is around the film to wedge your cash), and also note that the screw on lid has a rubber gasket around its rim to provide moisture protection. My daughter has already called dibs  ;)

I like how it tells the "Postmaster" that it is safety film and not dangerous and that it can be opened to inspect if necessary.

To go OT, but suggestions on what I should rate this 100 ASA film as (that was best before 1960)?? A stop a decade (3 ASA???)? And what about BW processing? I am thinking 7min in HC110 dil b (a random suggestion I found out on the web)

You should be able to get something out of it at EI 3.
7 minutes in HC-110(B), should also help bring what's available on the film back to life...

When it comes to long expired film, what to do is really anyone's guess. I could go all Ansel on this one and recommend sensitometric testing but I never think it's worth all that trouble.

I could also recommend processing in PQ Universal 1+9 for 10 minutes like I do for my color film... That definitely gets all that silver developed.

Try convincing a modern phoneographer today that "all" they need to take pictures at night in addition to their eyePhone is a couple of photoflood lamps :D

Well, it does work very well. As a bonus, your subjects even get a free tan from all the heat these generate which enhance their look considerably  :P

I like how good old 32asa panatomic x is said to "have all the speed necessary for normal needs".

" Panatomic X"is my all time fav film name. It sounds like a weapon of a super hero. "Super takumar" is my fav lens name for similar reasons.

That was back in the good old days before the ISO wars :D Also, I agree that Panatomic-X is the best film name ever. I hear that Marvel is planning to release a movie in 2019 featuring Panatomic-X  ;D

I don't know ... I played with Public Enemy once in the early oughts and there wasn't a Pan-X on the gig ... maybe he just couldn't make it that night?

Keeping some of the best for the last stretch, here are parts of the envelopes for a company called Photographic Stores.
They have a lot of illustrations and pictures on their envelopes.
I wonder if the Camera club of Ottawa will still accept those 3$ yearly memberships!

No, it's from Ottawa.
It's just one of those invented words created for marketing purposes. Larja -> Large-a -> Large....

Or how a Bostonian naturally pronounces Larger :D Or technically I guess it'd be "Laaja"

I thought it was either New York Italian or a remnant of the 1990's alternative music scene where every letter E seemed to be pronounced as an A

I'm 100% with everybody on the Super Hero film and lens names. Could I also add (the slightly more understated) UK camera comic hero, Coronet Commander, to the gang?

Actually (sorry, I'm a bit too into language), dropping the r's came from the aristocratic British accent at the time of the original 13 colonies. Uppity colonists would emulate that accent, and eventually it became the way all the colonies spoke. EXCEPT, Philadelphia. Even early on, they hated the crown and didn't want to speak like them. So even to this day, you'll hear that most of the northeast, especially New England, drops their r's, but Pennsylvanians do not.

You're welcome.
It's true when you think about it that there are so many camera related names that could relate to superheroes or names in manga comics.

Oh! Look Elmar! Here comes the evil Summicron!
