Anyone try ReraPan 127 film?
« on: July 31, 2014, 10:44:12 AM »
Anyone try the new EZOX of Japan's Kawauso-shoten's ReraPan 127 film? Been hearing about this film since Feb, strange coming from a agricultural machine, machine parts, bicycle company. It seems to be available in the USA now.

I haven't tried it, but I suppose anyone can buy a Coater machine. I mean, Kodak has one on eBay.

forgive me if i'm incorrect, I always thought that Kodak's equipment for 127 film was from the Fotokemia plant, with which produced ADOX and later Efke branded product.

Oh I haven't a clue what size it is. I believe it all starts as a MAMMOTH sheet and gets cut down from there. But they have a Coater of some sort for sale. (Local pick up I might add it the size of a pole barn)

That's exactly how all films get coated.
They coat the large sheet using a pressure coating machine and then send it through a big chiller to harden the emulsion. It gets rolled up and sent to the cutting machines that trim it to the proper width and roll it once again. It then gets sent to the proper machine that prints the border, punches the sprockets, cut the length to size and loads it all in the cassette (or puts the backing paper on and rolls it all on the spool).

Shot a test roll this afternoon:

ReraPan 1 par Terry B, on ipernity

ReraPan 2 par Terry B, on ipernity

I don't think I like it as well as Efke 100, but at least it's available...

How did you process it Terry?  I've got my first roll in the camera now.

TK, I don't see the nice smooth falloff in the midtones that I like in Efke and in FP4.  The blacks are nice and dark and the detail is good if not superb.  I scanned the negs at both 2400 and 4800dpi and it didn't seem to improve at the higher res (i.e., the film itself may be a bit grainy).  I'll have to shoot some more; this roll was shot in bright sun

Peter, I followed Freestyle's recommendation and souped in RO9 1+50 for 16.5 minutes

Just posted some results in the 5 September thread. Here's one of them.

. by ridgeway photographer, on Flickr

Processed 9 minutes in Aculux 3. Had some problems scanning it (using Vuescan) but finally came up with some settings that worked. Still needed some editing though. Doesn't seem that sharp to me but could be my scanning as I had to put it on the glass. I need to do some experimenting.

Peter,
I like the range of tones you got (looking at all three shots).  Like you, I'm not sure I like the detail/sharpness rendering as well as I might.  I'm comparing it to Efke, though, which I suspect has a higher silver content.  Maybe we need to experiment with developers too; Freestyle lists D76 as their first choice for this film.

From Macodirect:
•ISO 100, Supergrain,  1+12, 6 Min., 20°C (68°F).
•ISO 100, R09/Rodinal, 1+25, 9 Min., 20°C (68°F).
•ISO 100, Microphen, Stock, 9 Min., 20°C (68°F).
•ISO 100, D-76, Stock, 9 Min., 20°C (68°F).

I've rescanned some and putting the neg on the glass has reduced the sharpness for me. I previously worked out I need the neg about 2mm above the glass for best sharpness so I've knocked up a holder and it's definitely better. Bearing in mind the neg is smaller anyway I think sharpness is OK (also, as this was my first roll through the Rolleiflex 4x4 I'm not yet familiar with what the camera can produce).

Grain is acceptable for me. See the 100% crop below. The Aculux definitely helps with that.

I've also sorted my scanning problems. Not sure why I was finding it so difficult. I started again with my normal b&w film scanning settings and the results are fine.

So overall, I'm happy with it.

First pic below is using my homemade holder with suitably ragged edges.

Final thought. I figured out the dev time by using Maco's times and finding a film in the Massive Dev Chart that matched then looking for a dev time for that film in Aculux. The only film that matched all of Maco's times/dilutions was Agfa APX 100... Hmmm.

Peter,
That's looking pretty good.  I have a home-made neg carrier made out of black polystyrene (with equally ragged edges) that gives me generally good results.  I've been scanning my LF negs flat on the glass--maybe I should cobble together some holders for them too.  It would be an empirical test I suppose.  Let me know if you want a roll or two of Frugal Photographer's respooled Portra.  It looks very good in 4x4.

Thanks Terry but I'll stick with the b&w for now.

Does it resemble any Chinese films like Lucky or Shanghai?

The "manufacturer" is mostly an importer/exporter and seems to sell a lot of Chinese products. I'm thinking they're just spooling and packaging film rather than coating it.
