Blad V digit*l back, anyone, at £8700?
« on: July 22, 2014, 08:23:17 PM »
I have 500 quids (£) worth of Blad 501c/m with chrome 80 & 120 lenses and I love it. It's been lightly used & I expect it to outlive me (I'm 54). But Blad has just announced a 50mp back called the CFV-50c which, for £8700, I can stick on the back of my £500 kit and never need to buy a roll of film again. Thinks - I could sell my two film backs for, perhaps, £75 and reduce the new back to a bargain £8625.

Or perhaps not. I bought the Blad 4 years ago because I love to waste film. That's why I bought it rather than a second-hand DSLR for a similar price. So why would I want to drop the best part of 9 grand on a digital back? I just dont get it. Yet chatter on the net has decided that it's a fair to good price for what it offers.

I sort of get the H series of digital cameras, if one is either very affluent (they are £20k+) or makes a living out of commercial photography where a client 'needs' to instantly assess tethered images. But putting the price of a used luxury car onto the backside of my existing V? I don't think so. Perhaps the market will prove me wrong. Or perhaps with Blad's latest pimped-up Sony re-badged cameras and megapixel chasing numbers, people will look back on the simple, robust workhorse of the V series and think "ah - those were the days". And - for £500 - what a bargain they are.

At the risk of being called a heretic and burned on a pyre of expired Tri-X, I have to disagree to some extent....

As much as I love using wasting film, I don't have a problem with digital.  There are times when I would love to have the option of a digital back for my 500c/m and be able to shoot 50 to 800 ISO and take a load of photos - without having to change backs.  It's even square format.  And you get to use existing lenses. And it's even in-keeping with the look of the A-series backs.

Yes, the price is steep - relatively - but not when compared to the original digital backs which were up to £30k - had to be tethered to a laptop / the national grid and were pretty crap into the bargain. If I had £8,700 burning a hole in my pocket right now, I wouldn't hesitate. But I wouldn't dispose of my film backs as you'd then have the best of both worlds - and you don't even need to buy a new body. In relative terms, it's not much more expensive than a Nikon D4s or Canon 1Dx

Sorry, I know this is really meant to be about film but am I the only 500 series user on here who would love to have one of these in the bag??

Hi Paul

As always, you reasoning & argument is pretty flawless. Maybe it's just different strokes...

And a great opening line, too! The "Tri-X pyre" is priceless. Unlike the back, which is simply pricey  ;D

It's odd that the are reviving the Hasselblad V series... when it was discontinued last year. I was not expecting new V products. They don't even have a current product to mount the back on.

I guess that they realized that they have millions of 500 series cameras floating around and they had better grab those customers back before they switched to Mamiya or Pentax.

It's even square format.
It's a 43.8 x 32.9 mm "digital 645" sensor.

Yes, the sensor is 6:45.  However, if you check the data sheet, it has two shooting formats - one of which is square:
