Beach Bypass
« on: January 20, 2014, 09:24:13 PM »
My first attempt at bleach bypass. I thought it would be more dramatic effect, based on the instahipstagramatic fakes that I see. However, looking around Flickr for actual bleach bypass processing, it seems normal.

Here was my process:
Olympus XA with Agfa vista plus 200 shot at 400ASA
3:15 develop (100F)
0:30 blix (100F)
5:00 fix (Ilford rapidfix) RT
1:00 stab RT
rinse

Next time I'll try going directly to fix and literally bypass the bleach.

Oh, these were taken in Asbury Park, where I was playing a gig with Bruce Springsteen (really!). So I'm calling this set "Beach Bypass" :)

quite subtle. Good to know that you can regulate it.
I'll be looking forward to your next roll :)

The one thing that did happen dramatically was the overexposure. Remember that these were shot a stop faster than the film is rated, and they still came out a bit overexposed in normal development (in a good way, of course). Also, very grainy (I guess the two go together?) Anyways, I'm looking forward to my next roll too :) I may do a second "beach bypass" at Coney Island :)

Some very nice shots, and another interesting way to develop film.

I recently almost did a developer bypass, by accident of course, managed to stop myself before i poured the bleach in first :p

Next you´ll be telling us you were playing with Southside Johnny ;)

Seriously though, I liked the set.

Yes it is! I'm in Jesse's band. The Boss was sitting in with us at the Light of Day benefit.

And now, partly to get back into Damion's good graces ;) , I present to you BEACH BYPASS II: Son of a Beach

This time, I completely skipped the blix and went straight to fix, BUT I used the same fix I used last time, which means there was a little blix contamination. I didn't figure it would matter all that much, but next time I'll mix up new fixer. I must say, I'm quite liking BEACH bypass and it may turn into my regular C41 development method :) (I wonder what E6 film would look xpro'd AND bleach bypassed?)

All pictures are Olympus XA/Agfa Vista Plus 200 rated at 400. Maybe a different filmstock will give me different results?

And finally, I present to you BEACH BYPASS III: Mystery Science Bypass 800 (so named because it's a "science" experiment on using different filmstock than I used the last 2 times [Fuji as opposed to Agfa], it's a "mystery" whether it will actually look any different, and I rated the 400ASA film at 800). Conclusion? Filmstock makes no difference, bleach bypass is bleach bypass :) I still love the look, and it is officially my "normal" C41 development :)

Ok, final (??) experiment (maybe this should now be moved to articles or something?): Cross-processing AND bleach bypassing. This is Velvia 100F processed in tetenal with a bleach bypass. Conclusion: there's definitely a little bit of Velvia's characteristic redshift, but mostly it just looks bleach-bypassed. Not cool-looking enough to waste another roll of Velvia on.

I like the look, and it saves you the longest step in the process. Great job on these. I think I am inspired to try this with some slide film I have laying around.
