What photo book is on your wish list for Christmas?
« on: December 07, 2013, 03:30:16 AM »
I know we've talked about books before, but I need some ideas for gifting...

Stephen Shore's   "Uncommon Places" is my go to book...

What's your favorite?

Hiya Becky.....!!

I have a few.  In no particular order of preference:

Shinan - Michael Kenna
Faces of the North - Ragnar Axelsson
Behind the Mountains - Ragnar Axelsson
Iconic Images - Steve McCurry
Here Far Away - Pentti Sammallahti
Route 66 - Shannon Richardson

If I had to choose but one, it would be "Shinan" but I would love to get my hands on "Faces of the North" as well....

I'm not really much of a photo book reader/viewer/collector, but I've read good things about Magnum Contact Sheets, so I've got that on my list.
Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.

Thanks for the list.

The Shannon Richardson-Route 66 book is fun!

I planned to have RAX's Behind the Mountains under the tree (I won't put it there since it is already unpacked), but then i stumbled upon a new copy of 1st ed. Japan by Kenna for a great price and couldn't resist... Looks like merry christmas indeed.

PS: Nice list, Paul, I'd defitinely push the Penti Sammalahti's book somewhere to the first places of the list - FANTASTIC book, one that I come back to very often... Beautiful images and a very well crafted book.

I`m keeping my fingers crossed for Lars Tunbjörk "I love borås" under the tree.
Being realistic I also have a back up, Anders Petersen “Cafe Lemitz”  :)

Try 50 Sheds of Grey.  I think it's about darkrooms.

I already have mine!

I met up with my good friends Tony & Eva Worobiec at the weekend. About 10 years ago they published a book called 'Ghosts in the Wilderness - Abandoned America' which is now sadly out of print otherwise I would have had a copy adorning my bookshelf. They had a call from their publisher a few weeks ago saying that they had found a few copies languishing in their archives and would they like them. After a bit of haggling I am now the proud owner of a brand new copy! For those who are not aware of this book I urge you to seek out a copy as it is a seminal piece of work that is becoming more collectable as every year passes.

I've taken your advice.  I don't know Tony or Eva but I've seen some of their work previously.  Given that we've recently returned from Route 66 and have a desire to return to explore some of the lesser known "abandoned" places in the USA, this should be a great read.

You weren't kidding about the prices!! I've gone for a "very good" option off Amazon that's being shipped in from USA - hopefully some time between 20th December 2013 and mid-January 2014.

Paul.

Hi Becky,

I don't have any photo gear or books on the list this year, but these three have been read more than the others in '13.  I might have added the recent Vivian Meier too, but really these three are it.

We have a one gift from all the family thing going on, so I'm hoping for Yann Arthus-Bertrand's Earth from Space, and I've been a good boy (in the main) ;)

I'm hoping for the "here far away" one. It was sugessted earlier and it fits my state of mind in photography right now.  Thanks!

well I purchased my Christmas present (to me) book today
the Stephen Bulger Gallery, here in Toronto, was having their 50% off sale this week so I went to browse
purchased Bruce Davidson's  "England & Scotland 1960"
what a wonderful book, what a wonderful photographer
street photography has certainly changed since those days

Congrats, Paul. It's a beautiful book - and your's was a steal. I bought an italian edition for even less a few months back, but it was then a quarter of the price of the few remaining english exanokes from the first printing.
