What is that black 'scratch'?
« on: October 27, 2013, 05:57:54 PM »
Pulled out my Granddaddy's No2 Brownie boxcam for World Camera day.  I've never used it before and every frame has the same black 'scratch' on the right hand side.  (OK... so light is not reaching the film right there...) What should I be looking for?

If it's printing black, that suggests that it might be a scratch on the neg (particularly if it's in such sharp focus). As it appears on other photos it might be something in the camera. It's something right on the film plane - perhaps check the pressure plate in the camera to see if it's a hair or something that's got into the camera?

Sometimes you get loose stuff like that that eventually gets ripped out by the film transport and is only visible on one frame.

From memory, the Box No.2 doesn't have felt seals... but it sure does look like some sort of textile.
Hair tend to be slim and smooth... unless you have a really bad perm  ;D

I'm hoping it's some wayward fiber!  It's in the EXACT position on EVERY frame on the roll.... so maybe it was across the back of the camera lens?

Come to think of it (and after reviewing the picture above), I notice that the fiber looks similar to the roughness along the left hand edge of the frame.  I wonder if there is a scuffed up surface inside the camera and that may be to blame.  Time to get out the flashlight...
