the unpredictable
« on: September 07, 2013, 10:56:41 AM »
Sometimes something goes wrong. After all the result turns out really good. Sometimes. Here I held the IR filter with my hand in front of the Olympus XA and there are reflections between the case and the rear surface of the filter.

Show your most interesting picture(s) of the unwanted, unintended, unpredicted.

good idea for a thread!

my latest happy encounter with the unpredictable would have to be this shot. used a small pringles can with expired photographic paper in it.
I had no idea that the distortions would be THIS trippy~
I'm quite happy with how it ended up :)

This happy accident came about when I opened the back of my K1000 to load film into it and realized it already had film in it. I slammed the back shut, figured I'd lost a couple of frames but went ahead and shot the rest of the roll. The whole roll came out kinda funky and cool. This was the best of the bunch.

Fantastic thread!

My Ricoh 500G disables the light meter if you leave the shutter in bulb. Sometimes I forget to take it back out:

On one of the first rolls with my Vito II I forgot to focus and ended up with a completely out of focus shot. I kinda like it!

Leonore: how come the time the latch on my Nikon broke, I didn't end-up with anything this cool?

My lightning-quick reflexes and mad skillz? And by 'mad skillz' I mean 'blind luck'? ;)

(The back really was open for just a fraction of a second, and I was shading it from the light anyway to load.)

I rather liked this one. The shutter on my Kowa 85mm f2.8 (leaf shuttered) lens decided to develop arthritis. I measured the shutter speed afterwards, approximately of course. And it was 6 stops off. So this is overexposed in the extreme. Yet I managed to scan it. You'll never see grain like this from Acros:

Pinhole in the rain. Shanghai 100 (4x5) has hopeless reciprocity characteristics (rather like FP4+) and this 150s exposure was doomed once it started raining and a drop inevitably dribbled over the pinhole.

I have had my share of mishaps. Here's another:

The self timer switch on the leaf shuttered lens got engaged without me noticing. Once I thought I had the shot in the bag (the mirror swinging up makes a loud kaaawhuump) and I started to walk away I heard the dreadful sound of the timer clockwork. I rushed back and reframed blind (the mirror was still up of course, obscuring the view, so why am I looking into the viewfinder?). And better framing than this is difficult even with finder. Missed the focus by a foot though. So now my reflection is more in focus than I had hoped. Ah well, that´s Sod´s law I suppose.

Taken handheld in Birmingham on a Yashica Mat with some Kodak film that expired in 1999. Totally messed up the exposure time, but I like it anyway!

I feel like I'm going to get something strange pretty soon! My Lomo Konstruktor tells me that I've shot more than 36 exposures on my roll of 24. And it ain't over yet... :o

Mine was the same, although I couldn't tell how many exposures I ended up with until the roll was done because the counter never really worked. Not enough friction I guess? But for the first roll, the film would sometimes advance all the way and other times, it would only advance a little bit. I ended up with some overlapping frames and also some larger gaps between frames. It resulted in this inadvertent "pano" shot. Lomo redscale 100. I think I posted this in another thread. Can't remember. Brain is tired. Here it is again anyway. Kind of a cool accident.
