Not New York in 1969 but Leeds in the 1970's
« on: July 17, 2013, 09:35:19 AM »
Perhaps not as glamorous as New York in 1969 but this is a wonderful series of images made by a local lorry driver Peter Mitchell (no relation!) in an effort to record a rapidly disappearing urban landscape.

I must admit this appealed to me more than the NYC set. Many a photographer would have made far worse work of it too.

Very much enjoyed these photos although I notice from some of the comments that Mr Mitchell went on to be a "typography tutor at Leeds College of Art & Design in 1995"...so the whole 'lorry driver' schtick is the newspapers putting their own spin on things. Leaving that minor gripe aside, I absolutely love the colour and the detail in these photos. Wonderful.

......so, I see Leeds hasn't changed much, then!!  ;D

It's great to see the proper north of England - even though Leeds is on the wrong side of the Pennines.  The similarities to Manchester, Stockport, Bury and many of the places I frequented as a teenager at the time these photos were taken is amazing.  Up to that point, there were still entire streets and estates which had been mostly cleared but were remnants of WW2 bombing raids that had never been rebuilt.

Places like those portrayed were my playgrounds as a child. I found the shot of the fish shop particularly poignant as there were dozens of small, independent traders like these, everywhere you looked. Little by little, though, the likes of Tesco and other supermarket chains stole their business from under them.  The only shops like these that still exist are in areas too remote for supermarkets / chain stores to find commercially viable.

Great find and a wonderful view back down memory lane.

Ditto that, LD; I like the way he's posed the shopkeepers in their respective doorways.  And my favorite is the two women in the fish shop--there's a kind of sad resignation in their faces, I think.  My first experience of England was  Yorkshire in 1976, and I loved it.  Largely gone now, isn't it?

Hi Terry.

1976 has definitely gone - but Yorkshire's still there  ;)

My ex came from Bradford and, until a couple of years ago, there were still nooks and crannies of Bradford and the surrounding area that bore a striking resemblence to the places in these photos.  Unfortunately, the north of England has had a bad press for the last 30-odd years because it fought back when it was expected to lie down and die when heavy industry disappeared.  Political parties of all persuasions have over-promised and under-delivered when it comes to giving the worst affected areas a helping hand.

It's always sunnier east of the Pennines... and that's a fact!  ;D

No problem. Very often, people who only know me from my online postings assume I'm a gay man. I take that as a compliment.

This is one of those postings I may live to regret but, even before we met in London, I don't think I could conjure a view of you as a gay man (not that I have any issue with gay men, I hasten to add) from your postings or your online moniker.  In fact, other than for those who use their real names, I've often wondered from whence our online names emanate.

When I handwrite my name 'Paul' it is often mistaken as 'Pam' so quite often receive notes back with 'Dear Miss Mitchell'.  :-*
