It's a bit strange but I've always been more amazed by the cameras than the pictures.
They look so icky that I wonder if I would even try and touch them... let alone bring them to my face to use them!

I dunno, how small is the space between a hermit with no means looking for models, and someone who takes a bath and can afford to hire them to do the same things?
I find his work interesting in that "found" kind of way, I guess if you take enough photos and develop them in a garbagy enough environment they're always going to seem mysterious. Hence Lomography.
I wouldn't want to touch his camera either but I find it genius that he was able to put together a lensed camera out of garbage.
And he was crafty as a fox.  The article doesn't mention that once he became famous people were lining up to pose for him, and that quote of his is priceless:  “If you want to be famous, you must do something more badly than anybody in the entire world.”

Can't help but admire his audacity in (a) building a working camera from stuff I wouldn't normally touch and (b) producing photos with it. Maybe the models were sufficiently intrigued and, perhaps, sympathetic towards him? Maybe he was a real charmer or just a bit weird and kinky?

I dind't know about this guy until Ed mentioned him in a post sometime ago. I think he's a master to built such equipment out of trash and still be able to take really great pictures (in my opinion...) and yet developd the material himself.

I wonder what developer he used? Vodkanol?
I also wonder how much a roll of film used to cost in those days?

Is it bad that I'm now entertaining thoughts about building my own lenses with plastic elements ground with toothpaste and ash?
Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.

As long as you won't hide in the bush and try getting pictures of ladies sunbathing I think it's perfectly normal... ;D

Vodkanol  ;D ;D ;D

When I first saw a picture of him it reminded me straigh away one of the caracters from the "Amores Perros", first movie ( and what a movie!!!) of Alejandro Inarritu... he also  directed 21 Grams, Babel and "Biutiful", all highly recommended movies!

Love his work, but, I'm not sure those cameras are hygienic!

I've known about this guy for some time. I missed his Paris exhibition by a day (I live in the UK). He also took photos of women on the television, which is an interesting idea. There is a German artist (name escapes me at the mo) who sells his work for a fortune and he 'just' photos other peoples' porn on his computer monitor. In some ways, the ideas are similar. Although Tichy had more taste.

I think that (unlike many contemporary artists) he was sincere, dedicated (in his own way) and true to his interest. And I applaud that. The world needs more individual artists and Tichy was nothing if not an individual. He also acted for his own creative fulfilment, rather than to become rich, famous or both.

Quite true. Proof is that he was completely unstoppable in his pursuit and never tried to sell anything for profit.

a little bit a mix of both. mastering the art of photography through repetitious shots of women.
