So all going to plan, I expect to have three or four days in the Home Counties late July. Any locals up for a pint? Almost certainly arriving 29 Jul and leaving 2 Aug.

Always happy to meet our friends from across the water (from whatever direction). If you're up for a "meet" please let me know where you're likely to be staying and where you want to visit and I'll see if I can get a day off.

It always amazes me that the only place visitors ever seem to head for is London. OK, it's our nation's capital but there are oh so many more beautiful and interesting places around this small isle and it's such a pity that, with a limited time frame, London is seen as the best way to "cram" in as many sights as possible.

Anyway, I'd be delighted.

I feel your pain! But I lived in London for a while and have several friends there (still) who I will want to catch up with. If I can, I'm hoping to organize a day trip up to Leeds and another outing to Cambridge. Four days are already looking a bit short...

Well, I live about the same distance from Cambridge as I do from London and, if you already have plans / an idea of what you need to do in London, I could always meet you in Cambridge. Much more civilised place and plenty of historical interest, places to get a bite to eat and things to see and do. There's even a decent camera shop that sells loads of second-hand film gear.....

It wasn't pointed at anyone in particular, Deborah. The UK is a small but extremely diverse place (geographically, geologically and culturally) and yet, despite having great connections from the likes of Manchester, Glasgow and Birminghamto major cities around the world, the world seems to head for London.

Ironically, the one thing I think London isn't typical of is being British. It's a big, multi-cultural melting pot, it has a lot of art and entertainment on-tap but I've never regarded it as quintessentially British. Probably because I doubt there isn't any such place. Being British is more of a mind-set.

Well, if you guys would just drive on the right side of the road we could leave London and head for all the other places we want to see! But I do believe that LOndon is actually a great place to come to understand the British. In fact, after being there for about 4 days I started to understand why the British hate the French!

A bit of delay getting things in order, but it looks like the 31st (July) and/or 1st (Aug) are good days for London rendezvous. I'll be going up to Cambridge on the 30th for a dinner date with an old friend, but planning to make a day trip of it, so could meet there in the afternoon. Does that work for anybody?

Hi Terry. The 31st and the 1st are both work days for me and although I live in London I'm currently working in another town, so I'm not sure I'll be able to get home and then out again in time to join in unless you're going to be staying out for dinner/drinks in the evening too.

This doesn't mean 100% that I won't be able to meet up, but I'm going to have to leave it to others to make arrangements and then I'll piggy back on them depending on my availability. My current work project is due to finish "at the end of July" (although it's uncertain what that will actually translate to in Project Manager speak because no firm dates have been given), so there's always the chance that I'll be a completely free agent during your stay, but it's all up in the air.

If you're able to stay out for the evening then perhaps the unofficial Filmwasters London Clubhouse (a.k.a. The Globe pub at Moorgate) would be a good place to meet. It's worked well in the past.

Great stuff gents. If it's the evening then I'm in. Sausage & mash with some London Pride & a select group of Filmwasters? What's not to like (other than Ken's demonstration of what exactly constitutes veggie banging in his book!!). Be afraid!

So, shall we commit? Of the two nights Thursday 1st is slightly better for me, but I'm easy. If we can agree one of the two nights ASAP I'll post a new topic and 'sticky' it (again, that's NOTHING to do with Ken's veggie banging) and will let Miller know etc.
