Latest addition to my camera collection is..
« on: May 22, 2013, 09:43:05 PM »
... a Olympus IS-1000 (IS-1). The camera has an extraordinary lens  according to camerapedia:

"The lens is a multi-coated 35-135mm f4.5/5.6 lens with 16 elements in 12 groups and including
an ED (Extraordinary Dispersion) objective lens element, providing sharp and contrasty images of
a quality approaching that of Nikon prime-lenses. "

Here is a picture of the camera and a photo from the first roll.

OK, but what does the "Z" stand for in that acronym?

Zoom? You're probably right. They say  a picture is worth thousand words so probably  there are
two flashes on top of the camera. (i'm at work now so can't confirm it).

The two flashes are for redeye reduction.
And yes, it is a Zoom Lens Reflex camera :)

Or what I usually call an SLR with no removable lenses.

You don't need removable lenses with the range from 35mm to 135mm in one lens.  ;)

Kind of reminds me of my Yashica Samurai Z: somewhat similar form factor and features (mine is a 12 element in 10 group 25-75mm (35-105mm full-frame equivalent) zoom, though of course mine is half-frame as well (as if it wasn't weird enough). The 1980s were an odd time....

Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.

I have enriched my collection with another ZLR - Ricoh Mirai 135. Lens has 15 elements in 13 groups
and shutter speeds range from 32/1 to 1/2000,  simmilar as Oly IS-1.

The yashica samurai was a strange beast. It was also sold under the Kyocera brand (who used to make Yashica) and came in both leftie and rightie versions for some models. Also, it's got vertical film transport making all the images horizontal by default.

Lots of design experiments went on during the 80's. Some of it was fantastic while other times were the worse. But still, it was a pretty awesome time.

Fluminian, all you need now is a canon photura and chinon genesis!

That's my intention, tkmedia. I've got Minolta Riva Zoom 105i, Olympus IS-1000 and Ricoh Mirai 135 for the time being, but I see the
others in my future soon. All bridge cameras will be mine. Bwahahaha!  ;D

This reminds me, I really must get hold of a battery for my Yashica Samurai and run a film through it.

That and some of the other cameras mentioned here do remind me of a time when camera manufacturers were willing to experiment with form.

Thanks , Urban. 35mm cameras are half the fun of having photography as a hobby. The big cameras are pretentious and their size is  prohibiting,
though this 35mm camera (Mirai) is bigger than some medium format cameras.  ;D

My scanning software (came with the Canon Canoscan 9000f) shows me previews before scanning "for real". Too bad for your Fujica, but you can  get it repaired.

I guess I could try myself one day. After all I only paid 1€ for it. But it's actually not that bad that I have less cameras to use now. I will get to know each one better and will have results faster as I don't shoot with a different camera each day.

Interesting. I don't have a camera I haven't shot with and I would definitely shoot with different cameras on the same day,

I have two small kids and I work from home. So I a) don't have much time for photography and b) don't get the chance to get out of the use very much. So it's hard to find the time to do much photography. I'm lucky if I find the time to shoot 1 roll of 120 a week.

Oh, I have one of those IS-1000s - I went through a phase of buying old 80s/90s/early 2000s 35mm stuff that was posh in its day but which nobody wants now. This one cost me about ten pounds on eBay. I was playing with it this morning actually.

I didn't realise it was supposed to have such a good lens - I've only put one roll through it and that was some cheap consumer colour film. Maybe I'll stick some T-Max in it and take it out for a walk.

It has all sorts of cunning features, like the portrait mode which automatically zooms in and out for different types of portrait once you lock on, and I've been told the AF is really good in the dark. Thing is that the lens is really slow.

You don't give up, do you?  ;D But don't fear I won't be giving up 35mm after all (what a surprise). A Minolta Dynax 7 (with vertical grip) or a Dynax 9 are high on my list. And to go with it a 50mm f/2.8 macro lens, because I can never get close enough with other lenses. And maybe some Provia 400X for kicks.

At last! I thought you'll never succumb to the charms of the 35mm let alone to non-rectangular format.  ;D
Minolta Dynax 9 is a great choice!  If I weren't such a Pentaxian I would get that camera too.

because I never used it, I guess? I liked it well enough when using it but I generally like wider lenses and/or more compact bodies for my 35mm. so off to someone more willing to use it went :)

I have one sitting on my desk.  I haven't shot with it yet.  It is suffering from the sticky plastic covering disease.  The cushioned part of the casing has a sticky/tacky feel.  Need to clean it, or find a way to remove the stickiness.

So partly based on this thread I got a Yashica Samurai X3.0 in the post yesterday... £22.50 + P&P + new battery which wasn't very much, so maybe £30 total. I put in a roll of expired Neopan 400 and took it out into the sun. It's a very different sort of beast to the IS-1000, being basically an high performance snaps camera with barely any manual features, but it's a lot of fun to use - I burned through the whole roll during a day when I was technically at work.

The vertical grip is pretty secure - it's one of the few film cameras I'd use one-handed, and with your other hand on top it's very solid indeed. The AF is... well, okay in the daylight anyway, not great in poor light, but it seems to have worked fine. And while I've not finished scanning the roll yet it appears that, even on 10+ year expired film and in half frame, it's given me surprisingly sharp pictures. WOULD FILMWASTE WITH AGAIN.

Being a die-hard Pentaxian didn't help me a bit when I was offered a Minolta Dynax 9xi body in 10/10 state for 60$.
Needless to say I bought it immediately and am now looking for a suitable lens.  I'm about to buy a 28-105mm 3.5-4.5
locally and am bidding for 50mm 1.7 on evilbay.   :)

Here is an image I took with the Minolta 9xi and the Minolta 28-105mm 3.5-4.5 lens.
