Topic: Pinhole contraption epic failure

Has anyone ever thought "well... that was a lot of work for nothing" ?

This is just what my world pinhole photography day experiment turned out to be. I had calculated everything, took great care into the crafting of my camera to ensure no light leaks and no contrast robbing internal reflections, made sights, tripod mounts, everything... and then the film came back.
This is the only print where we can remotely recognize anything in the image... I know they were rhododendron flowers in the neighbor's yard taken from about 70 feet... but that's about all.

Note to self: long focal length pinholes simply don't work.

You've got to take risks to learn and set yourself apart. Kudos to you Francois for trying something and new. Its not a failure, its a learning experience!

Well yes, just yesterday in fact. Made a set of bellows for a DIY MF camera, and they didn´t turn out very well, used maybe 6 or 7 hours on them. Too thick, didn´t compress enough, too stiff, the list goes on. But as TinTin said, I´ve learned a tonne from it. Next bellows will be better, maybe not good, but better.

If it´s any consolation, my DIY 4x5 pinhole camera that has been working very well up until WPPD, has developed a crack in the woodwork and as a result a light leak. All my images from Sunday are tainted.

Like all kids, I wanted to have the biggest toy in the store. Do you think a 1.81 meter long about 6 inch diameter cardboard tube was overkill?
All the inside was painted flat black except for the tube for the camera mount.

And Leon, those worms are actually the fibers from the black felt I used inside the mount's ABS tube. I didn't expect that to turn out so in focus!

Now, I can't figure out one thing: why the heck this didn't work in such a bad way?

François, every forum needs a mad professor and you are ours.

I'm sorry that you failed, but, I know you will bounce back with something longer and better. I don't sense that failure is in your immediate vocabulary and to be honest, I'm amazed that it failed.

No... just bad design...

Next one will be more normal. Not making a working pinhole is pretty low for me 

Though I did discover that soup can lids are incredibly thin and super resistant.

I can't quite picture it from the description.

As Tin Tin said, it's a learning experience.  You never know until you try.

I'd like to post a picture of the whole thing but it didn't survive well being transported... now, it's pretty much in pieces.
I could post some close-ups of the leftovers... but it wouldn't do the camera justice.

Not hard, it looked just like a concrete pouring tube that's a bit taller than I am.
