these are awesome. Is there any obvious reason why it looks like some of the colored layers dont line up. Could it be uneven coating of the dye layers? I would assume that back in 1910 they didnt have perfect machinery yet.

Actually I think it's due to the fact that he did three exposures one after the other and if there was movement in between then you would get those artefacts.

From the article:

"He used a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images. "

Ah, good old Prokudin-Gorskii, these aren't so much pictures as a small window back in time.

It's hard to imagine just how ground-breaking these shots must have been when they were originally made, and they're still quite astonishing to look at today.

There's more at the Library of Congress site.

He used a trichrome camera.
There are still people who use them, but more for artistic purposes.

Wonderful. How the world was so different then. And, with hindsight, seeing these knowing what was about to come and how the world would change in the following decades..

The Bermpohl looks wonderful.

This, by comparison, is a very silly 'multitemporal'.  Small, because I've never tried it on film ...
