Fighting an urge to buy another camera....
« on: January 15, 2013, 09:59:55 AM »
I have no idea why but just over the last few days Ive decided that the one thing im missing in my life is a nice Canon Autofocus SLR for the lazy days when I cant be bothered to think.

The top of the range A1 things looks lovely, yet over my budget  (which is a very vague -as cheap as I can get it for....)

Can anybody recommend any of the others, there appears to be many EOS XXX for £20 on ebay but which are the better ones?

I used Canons for many years !

they are broken down into 3 main groups:

single digit units are the PRO models [EOS1, 3, 5] alloy bodies, metal lens mounts
Double digit units are the PRO/Amateur models [EOS30 etc] alloy or plastic bodies, metal lens mounts
Triple and quad digit units are the consumer models [EOS300, 1000 etc] plastic bodies, plastic lens mounts

I have had a lot in the past - EOS1, 3, 5, 30, 300, 650, 1000 . . .

have you got Canon lenses?

I'm stuck with MF AE-1 and F1 and the FD range, which are excellent, cheap but MF, I looked at doing the same as you, but the newer lens mounts were expensive

Cheers Both.

I have the AE1-P so good point about the lenses...well worth checking out, depiste my bravado.. im still a bit skint and the wife wants a new kitchen so if lenses are pricey it could kill it,  I presumed that given the sheer volume of lenses out there It would be baragins ahoy on ebay.

Ill price up a few pro/semi pro things i think...

I have couple of Canons myself, A1 and F1-n. I would say that the prices of the fd lenses have raised lately because they are being bought for digital 3/4 cameras. If you go for a 50mm lens I dare to say the 1.8 lens is the best deal right now.

correct carlos, lens prices even on the previously redundant FD mounts
have increased because of the 4/3 cameras.

there will be a mountain of budget EF lenses on the market but the
special lenses or high end ones will be expensive!

oh you probably know but you will not be able to use EF-S lenses on
the older EOS film cameras !

It was a lot simpler and cheaper back before digital.  You just went and bought a few rolls of film to upgrade your sensor.

I wanted something "point and shoot" to bring along to festivals etc. The possibility to fully manually control the thing was essential.  Ended up with a  £15 "EOS Rebel X" - plastic all the way - hence super light! to carry around. Taken maybe 20 rolls with it, light meter is spot on and really nothing else to complain about except that it´s obviously pretty uninspiring to work with.
