Topic: Your plans for 2013

I normally don't to new years resolutions as I never really keep them. On the other hand makes for such a nice clean start (even though it's still totally arbitrary when a year starts).

So for 2013 I decided to shoot one roll a week through my Yashica Mat (or maybe through Late Developer's Rolleiflex? ) and only use Fomapan 100 as the film and Rodinal as the developer. Who knows. If I manage to pull this off I might have a nice coherent set of images by the end of the year (further details here: http://urbanhafnerphotography.com/blog/2012/12/5/vv8b3i8oqson8nee54jf6pgwr62gxp). Also, if anybody wants to join we could turn this into a collaboration and maybe end up with enough material by the end of the year.

I am moving house in early 2013, I need more room so i can set up a small darkroom and studio space for my collodion work that I want to explore further next year. Plan to do some trips afar again (hopefully Japan!) and just generally, waste more film

I'll be starting a new life basically. New job (hopefully), new apartment as I'm still at my parents until it gets sorted (which hopefully it'llby the end of December). Photographic wise... I want to get the collodion running once I'm settled.

Not so much New Year resolutions - more like lifestyle changes......

I need to lose a shedload of weight so that my knees begin to function properly again (or at least don't keep refusing to carry me up steep hills and cause me so much excruciating pain). 2013 is about improving my quality of life and, hopefully, extending it.

In photographic terms, I'm in the process of paring down the amount of kit I own so that I have nothing sitting around that I don't use regularly. My 35mm kit will be based around a Nikon F3HP but the majority of what I will be shooting will be MF (Hassy 500c/m and Mamiya 7).

Also, I've got a box of all sorts of 35mm and 120 film in the fridge. Again, I want to get this down to 2 or 3 films that I use to the virtual exclusion of all else. FP4+, XP2 Super and Portra 400 look favourite at present.

I want my life to be simpler and these are a few small steps....

Healthier usually translates to happier!

Experimenting with lith printing is my other goal for 2013.  I would really like to wade neck deep into that!

I know life everywhere is mostly a slog but I find the daily grind of getting to and from London a bit real pain. Its incredible to imagine but most of my contemporaries seem hell-bent on self-destruction chasing after a fortune that just isn't there to be had these days. I'm not sure that many who work in the City really appreciate what life is like in the real world away from the rat race.

I too hope my health improves. Though in no way life threatening, my ailments keep me from doing things I would like to do, photography somewhat down the list, below keeping up with my kids, being able to drive a car etc.

Photography wise I really want to build that darkroom. I´ve been telling myself this for the last five years.

I'm so inspired by Urban's resolution!  I would love to try to work up the nerve to shoot more people, though I find that often when I ask, people get curious and want to know...  do you have a card? a website? .  So next year, I'd love to work on a website... just something small I can direct folks to when asked.

i dont know what I'll be doing photo wise next year, hopefully try and put
my long term project on derelict fuel pumps to bed?

i know i'll be shooting film and hopefully more than this year.

nice project by urban -it would be great if we all could shoot at least 1 roll of film per week next year...
and maybe pass it on to another on a list for double exposures and if there were 52 participants,
everyone would get 1 roll of double exposurised film

This has been my first year back in film (started again in early spring after getting sidetracked by DSLRs for quite few years) so it is nice to be able to look back at my nice full binder of negs from this year!
I was going to say I want to at least shoot a roll a week but I know that sometimes my life gets too busy, like this week. I am going to make at least a print a week next year. Firstly I can always find the time to make a print, and secondly I usually forget to, so having it as a 'resolution' will help haha.

I am also going to buy less cameras next year and buy more film!

Speaking of film, I have been a kid in a candy store this year, experimenting with a lot of films. I want to keep experimenting but i also want to settle on a few films for the year and really get to know them vs jumping around (foma 100 and PanF+ are likely candidates)

Pull finger out and develop film.
Pull finger out and take more photos close to where I live.
Pull finger out and use the Linhof
Pull finger out and get rid of cameras that aren't used

As a fellow slave in the City chasing a fortune I don't need, don't really care about and that isn't there anyway I do find the journey into work a real drag too.  Next year is not going to be an easy year for me, but one positive thing I am hoping to do is a charity cycle ride from London to Paris in 24 hours ( )  for a charity supporting a 4 year old girl with a terrible degenerative disease.  Compared with what she  and her parents will suffer in a few years nothing I go through will come even close to being as bad so I can't complain about my lot.

With regards photography.......actually maybe I should take fewer photographs.  We'll see.

Ann - if you have some hosting I would recommend Berta, that's what I use and really simple to set up. Otherwise you can use their hosting for 19.99 Euro for a year. It won't be as fully featured as Squarespace but a good budget option if you want to try something.

I must admit I feel really fortunate that I have a job (web developer) that I can do from home. Two years ago I spent 1.5-2h a day commuting. It's so much better when you can just get up and walk a few meters and there you are

Charles, you've hit the nail on the head. Ironically, I really enjoy what I do, the company I work for and most of the people with whom I work. If I didn't, I'd be suicidal. My industry son ever allow me to get rich (but that's never been an attraction too me). I just want enough not to have to worry about living about bills and to allow Lara and me to have a holiday once a year.
I'm so sorry to hear about that little girl. Please send your sponsorship details to me as I will happily support such a worthy cause. As you say, nothing we're going through gets remotely close. Our lives have only minor irritations by comparison.

Some day I hope to work in the community where I live, no matter where that happens to be. It's been over a decade now that I've had an hour commute each direction, and now that it's in Alaska some times of the year it can easily be double that.

I recently read that the average age of a professional female photographer is 32, but the average age of a professional male photographer is 50. Immediately I thought YES! Seven more years to get good! Let's see, ten thousand hours divided by seven years, that's four hours a day every day, minus the time I've already put in, hmm....

I guess I had better keep a hand free for other things. 

...and don't forget to wash.

In general, with my wife's illness (now thankfully over), we're ready to write off 2012 and move on. Grateful for what we have, a fresh perspective on what's important, and anxious for a little bit of peace.

But, to try to stay on topic, for the new year I'd like to have more cohesion to my photographic work, I'd like to simplify my gear and workflow, I'd like to come closer to figuring who I am as a photographer, and hell, I'd like to just have some decent work. Ed's killing me with the Best Of collaboration. I feel like I'm looking for my Least Mediocre!

Nope - nothing that formal. Just go onto Main Forum and set up a "new topic". You might do a search and find on old thread to tag onto the bottom of but no harm in setting up a new one.

The search facility is really good. Most camera / format / film / lens types will probably have been discussed and there's a good smattering of philosophical  debates on various subjects. Posting photos is encouraged - so long as the photo was taken on film originally. Longest side of any posting needs to be around 630 / 650 pixels to get it onto the page and there's a maximum file size of 200kb.

Digital images are allowed only to "illustrate" (i.e. if someone is showing a piece of kit on the forum, etc). I don't think anyone here is what you'd call "anti" digital at all - it's just that this site is intended to promote film usage / wastage.

Oh, and don't forget to look at other parts of the site than just the forum. There are some great guest galleries and collaborations. Don't be afraid to shout out any questions on the forum as someone is likely to know the answer or at least be able to point you in the right direction....

Funny you should mention Square Space. I planning to offer a workshop with them in the B&H Event Space to teach photographers how to create their own websites.

In addition to honing my gum printing skills (I'm hooked!), I'll be taking a year-long self-portraiture class online. This will be my last year of my 30's and I want to document it and maybe learn a thing or two about myself. At the very least, maybe feel comfortable in front of the camera.
