Opinions on Portrait Sought
« on: April 20, 2007, 01:30:52 PM »
I recently took some photos of a family friend and would like to print one of them up for her parents but I can't decide which.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Camera: Rolleicord with close-up lens
Film: Fuji Acros 100

Thanks
Janet

Personally I would go with the first one. I don't have any real concrete reason I could give you, perhaps the child seems a little less guarded in that one? Also in the last two I get distracted by the fine hair in front of her left (on our right) eye. I just keep wanting to brush it away from her face! (is that a parent thing?)

I like the first one also.
There's something about the directness of it that my eye keeps going back to.

I  go  for the  first one also mainly because the eyes are brightest and rhe expression is best.  Can  i  suggest it  be  printed  down  slightly  to  give  a softer image,  a  cream  warm toned paper might suit,or  a textured art paper  might also work. Hope  it works out and your friend is pleased.

I agree. Go with No. 1. She looks at ease.

All great shots but I find the top one the more engaging.

Janet, I think the subject is possibly at her best in #1, but the composition bugs me slightly. I could do with more forehead (actually, not me personally....I could do with way less forehead and more hair!! ;D)...where was I? Oh yeah, so I'm slightly irrigated (sic) by that and also the rather dead-centred nature of the shot gets slightly more annoying every time I look at it....and if we're talking "nice print for mummy to hang on the wall" then looking at it is what's going to happen to this image - a lot.

Where I'm going with all of this is that although it's a close-run thing because #1 is indeed quite lovely, #3 would be my final pick.

I don't want to go 50/50 or call a friend, Chris. I'm going with #3. That's my final decision.

Thanks guys. I like #1 too, so I think that's the one I'll go for.

Ed: I was thinking a closer crop would balance out the lack of forehead issue in #1 - I like her expression in it.
