Urban requested I do a piece on my DIY 6x17 camera.

I had long been looking to make one. At first I thought of getting hold of two old Moskvas and chopping them up, and fusing the two longer halves together, rather like the Roger Hicks Longfellow. But I have an aversion for ruining old cameras, working ones at least - and one of them had to be if I were to have a lens and shutter. I then got sidetracked and built a 4x5 P+S out of a plant pot, with a Fuji 90mm on a helicoid. I used it for 6x12 mostly. The lens is stellar.

After a year or so the itch grew again. I like the idea of using an existing box of some sort as a starting point (ref the 4x5 P+S). After a glass of expensive Cognac I looked at the case it came in. Ran off and found a 120 spool and checked the inside dimensions. Yes, there would be room for spool holders top and bottom. Yes the case was long enough to give a 6x17 frame. This looked promising.

Problem is of course the sliding lid. This was in clear plastic. Wait a minute, I had another bottle of Cognac, and it had wooden lid. The logo was stamped in gold lettering on the lid: A E Dor. Hence the name of the camera.

Now how to build it? What lens to use? Well I could reuse the 90mm Fuji, I knew it was good, it had a helicoid, I had a finder for it, and most importantly it would cover 6x17. Building it posed quite an ordeal. The sliding lid would have to function as the back. This meant the pressure plate could not be fixed to the back. Also, even if there would be room for spool holders there was practically no room left either side. I could not get film in or out, my fingers were not small enough. This meant I had to make a chambre noir with film gate and rollers in one piece, and it had to come out when loading and unloading film.

The Cognac case was of pressed cellulose. Not very sturdy. So this needed to be clad for protection and to stiffen the camera. I found a piece of oak floorboard for the job. Stained in mahogany.

To say I was anxious of light leaks would be an understatement. But there were, and still are none. It works a treat. 400 speed film, f8 to f16, scale focusing, and it is super sharp. Not much distortion either. No need for a centre filter, vignetting is next to nothing. Very happy.

marvelous! I could only imagine how it would feel to hold a neg that size~ slide film would be awesome!

okay, I've shot 4x5 but still! this is wide stuff :)

Thank you all.

It does give me some satisfaction knowing I designed and built this camera from scratch, and that it turned out as good as it did. I´ve done comparisons to my 2.8E2 Planar Rollei, and my Kowa Super 66 85mm F2.8, both super sharp, and this is not far off, certainly better than most of my other MF stuff. To think that the neg is three times as wide is mind boggling. Even on my lowly V500 scanner at 2000dpi I get 200+ MB 16bit TIFF files.

Sandeha, It does indeed have a faint odour of Cognac. But only because I hydrate it with Cognac now and then so it does not dry out and warp. (It doesn´t anyway, the oak sees to that, but you can´t be to cautious! ;) )

Yes I try to shoot it handheld, mostly with 400 ASA film, f16 to f22, 1/125s, normally gives good results.

Will be taking it out tomorrow evening for a stroll in the city, and will use Acros and a tripod. Acros is faster than most 400 speed films when exposures are in the 5-10 seconds and longer league. Reciprocity sets in at around 2 minutes (2 seconds). Meaning it is a fast night time film.

Haha I just realized you are using caffenol - OK cognac and coffee... The film you are using is living the high life - that is why they look so good!

Took her for a night stroll in our capital city. Thought I had ruined the first roll as it had not wound tightly onto the take up spool, a fact I found out whilst unloading it under a street lamp. It would seem Acros backing paper and film base are thinner than the Kodak stuff I´ve been using so far. But it turned out well none the less.

This is really excellent! I mean the camera as well as the images!
 Only last week I've been thinking about about something similar - as a cheap way into 6x17 format... Now I have to find a suitable bottle (and box) of cognac... and empty it to get some inspiration :)

I am curious what kind of lens you used, and what the focal length is for your camera..I have a wooden wine box that I am thinking may work for something similar  to this..As you can prolly tell I am intrigued with your beautiful creation.

I would consider the camera a rough prototype. I can Live with the not so few idiosyncrasies, but I would hesitate a guess that a buying customer would not. For me to make a sellable camera would need a rethink. But I may consider it in the future.

@Diane, regarding the lens et al. It's a Fuji SW 90/f8 large format lens in a rather recent Copal shutter. 1-1/500s, B and T. Covers 6x17 quite well, though I do see a bit of falloff between f8 and f11. It is mounted on a Chinese made focusing helicoid, which again is mounted on a standard Linhof lens board.

Ezzie, you would be surprised at what some of us would put up with to get the images we want....

As long as I do not need to hold my breath more than a minute, nor hop around in a circle six times on one foot, I am pretty open to idiosyncrasies.  (Does cutting sheet film to size, because there is no more roll film for an old camera count?  I try to have at least one representative image from every camera I own.)

I am considering ripping out the guts of the camera and making an new insert comprising of not just the chambre noir with film gate, but also the spool holders etc (rather like a Box Brownie). Might make it easier to (re-)construct from scratch, if I ever do give it another go, or make drawings.

I have also discovered that a Nikkor 75mm f4.5, Grandagon N 75mm f4.5 and the Super Angulon XL 72 f5.6 on Linhof boards may fit the camera without adaptation. The camera flange back distance is approx 81.5mm (from front of lens board), meaning all these stopped down to f16 may work in hyperfocal mode. Though the two former may vignette slightly. I may borrow a Nikkor and try it out. (The reason a Fuji SW 90mm f8 works at the moment, is that it is mounted on a helical, which adds almost 20mm to the flange to film distance).

I picked up a rather nice DIY 6x17 on Fleabay a couple of years ago, and although built like a tank, it took some amazing images. I ended up selling it to a fellow in Switzerland. Then the itch came back!

I normally shoot 4x5 and 6x12, but I missed the 6x17 format. So, I ended up buying a custom conversion kit that uses a Plaubel Peco Jr. as its foundation and I haven't look back. This current model is based on Plaubel's 6x9 view camera format, and I couldn't be happier. A full range of movements is much better than a fixed focus.

Wish I could show you a picture, but I am not sure how to post one?

I picked up a rather nice DIY 6x17 on Fleabay a couple of years ago, and although built like a tank, it took some amazing images. I ended up selling it to a fellow in Switzerland. Then the itch came back!

I normally shoot 4x5 and 6x12, but I missed the 6x17 format. So, I ended up buying a custom conversion kit that uses a Plaubel Peco Jr. as its foundation and I haven't look back. This current model is based on Plaubel's 6x9 view camera format, and I couldn't be happier. A full range of movements is much better than a fixed focus.
