I´m a film DUMBO!
« on: October 19, 2012, 09:50:09 AM »
Few weeks ago I grabbed one of my cameras, a 35mm, and opened it. I opened it and saw that there was film already inside (what a surprise). I quickly (very quickly : ) closed the lid; then I though that only few frames would be useless. Nothing new to many filmwasters here, I know. I kept shooting for the last month with this camera, photo here, photo there, then I realised that I was over the 36 exposures with my 36 film roll. Something was not right. I tried to rewind the roll before opening the camera again and something was not right, it ran too smooth. Finally I opened the camera and to my surprise there was no film inside! Somehow I was tricked and thought there was a roll inside (I swear I saw it) when there was none!! This it is what I call a film DUMBO!!  >:(

Ooooohhh - "Phantom Film"....!!  :o

That's a new one on me. Still, no film was wasted - but did you take any "photos" that you were really looking forward to seeing had there actually been any film in the camera. That would be a bummer.....

There's more to this photography thing than meets the eye.

Of course, of course, still it was 35mm, not willing to derision 35mm film users, but when I shoot with 35mm I kinda shoot family pics, and tend to forget what I shot.

Pretty sure I have blown through entire rolls of 35mm without it being threaded properly so all the film stays in the canister and i'm capturing nothing. My more recent "shit!" moments are from my Bronica C which has an annoying double exposure switch that gives you little indication that you aren't advancing the film if you accidentally have it on, resulting in 12 shots in one! really sucks when it is 200 miles of driving and photo taking and all those shots are one.

I did once spend over an hour shooting an old drive-in, in Texas only to find before I left the back was empty. I bit my lip, loaded up and tried to shoot it again. The shots were shite.

Or maybe it was a roll of 32x10^6 ISO film, so sensitive that if you don't load and unload it in a darkroom it just vanishes.

I don't know what's worse... shooting only to discover there was no film to be had, or shooting and then somehow ruining the film before development.  I suppose they're equally as bad.  FWIW, I think we've all been there.   ;-p

I really like the second shot, in blue - a lucky accident perhaps

In my time I've made just about every mistake with shooting and developing film that it is possible to make. A year ago when stumbling around some rocks with a Yashicamat attached to a tripod, the camera back opened and it took 20 seconds to get it shut ... yet I only lost half a frame (and in fact the remaining half a frame worked by itself really well)

On the other hand, last week I accidentally took the lid off a jobo developing tank to pour the chemicals in. Well, my excuse is that with a Patterson tank, you can and do take the lid off because the internal funnel forms a light seal, but not with a Jobo ! Remembering my Yashicamat experience, I covered up the tank asap and decided to develop the film anyway ... needless to say it was a waste of time and chemicals as all the images were ruined.

Yes, I guess you can make a big list of things that were not supposed to happen.

I was holding my Rollei and almost fell out of my hands. One of the screws of the strap holder was missing and the back of the camera slightly opened, still it did not fall to the ground, something that has not happened yet...  :'(

Kevin (et al),

The strap on my Rolleiflex snapped while I was using it whilst on holiday in Marrakesh. I am not, as many who have met me will confirm, the most agile or nimble of individuals (to say the least). However, I do have good reactions and leapt, gazelle-like  :o managing just to grab the little bugger by the winding-on crank just before we both hit terra firma. No harm done, aside from a bruised ego. Aside from the amusement I must have provided for the locals, however, I almost had a catastrophic wardrobe malfunction.

I won't be buying a contemporary replacement leather strap - however nice they look. I'm going to see if I can find something a bit more robust than leather and sod the aesthetics.

I was teaching a friend to print.

My darkroom was my bedroom (in my parents house), with a large shelf fixed on adjustable brackets, fixed to the wall.  Three 20x16 trays filled with fluid.

Unfortunately he chose to lean on the shelf, the fixings at the back gave way and the shelf pivoted on the front of the brackets throwing every thing over the carpeted floor.

I had to lift the carpet and throw it away and lived with bare floorboards for a while, and he gave up learning to print.

Still was useful to include in my best man's speech when he got married and was a surprise for his parents because he hadn't told them.

I'm getting better with the cameras. though in the darkroom I can be a real "dumbo"!
just today did I shoot some film for a 9 frame test. 3 series of varied exposures, over, under and normal. then develop these with differening development times. anywhoo... I had cut a mask to measure up the right amount of film for cutting in the dark and I had a black plastic bag that I put them in. just too bad that I left it open when putting on the lights to prepare the chems >_<
