Good news indeed, Paul. I never minded wasting film it was the wasting of money that left a nasty taste ;D

Things are looking much, much better. Time to dig out the SX-70 and who knows, I may even treat it to a new skin!

Hi Paul.

Thanks for that, it looks brill....!!

Must get some pronto as there won't be many days left in 2012 where the UK ambient temperature is 55 degrees Fahrenheit, let alone 82.........

Just a thought; I wonder if the sharp detail, brighter colours and less buggering about / requiring an extra limb will come as a disappointment to those who liked the early stuff.......?

I just shot 30 shots of the new Sx70 stuff, will scan next week.

I was in spain, it was 30 degrees and bright sun, and I didn't do anything apart from just turn the photo over to develop, and the majoprity of them came out amazingly! it just works as it should, and I am very pleased :-)

will add some pics when I have the chance

LD you raise a good point about the temp in the uk! was going to wait a few weeks before I bought some. currently most of my wage packet is paying off this beautiful guitar I recently purchased so not had much money for film let alone TIP stuff :-( ahh well, may have to bite the bullet and fork out for at least one pack.

I have always loved TIP film, I have enjoyed joining them on the journey to perfection and it seems they are getting pretty close. I do hope they make some of the older formulas again with the new opacification layer tho, the first PX680 beta test film had such a cool colour palette.

Their timing on this is perfect. Hipsters wont want to shield or mess around with their films when they use their daylab. They just want their photo as easy as possible. Because that's what being a counter cultural writer/artist/creative/barista is all about.

Part 1:
Great news indeed! It looks like they may actually have a rock solid product by the time the rest of the world runs out of 100 series peel apart...thus forcing me to 'go integral' and buy 600 film compatible camera. I'm genuinely pleased that there will still be an instant option for me in the future (not forgetting New55 film too of course).

Part 2:
If they could tie this into a 50% price reduction I'd be ecstatic. £17 for 8 pictures is still crazy, crazy, crazy prices, people! Even with price hikes for film pretty much across the board this is a shocker. I'm only commenting because this is the first time I've ever checked the TIP site for pricing info. I had prepared myself for something like £1 per shot, but whoah, Nellie....£17 for an 8 pack has astonished me.

ed: hopefully on part 2; their future removal of the battery from the film pack might make the price per pack a little more reasonable. that or we can look forward to ten shots per pack again :)

Pricing discussion aside (I agree that I'd be able to/want to buy a lot more if it was a little cheaper), this stuff is great.

no need to worry about shielding, great colours, really fun to use and much more stable.  these were all taken in very bright sun in hot temps... and I haven't been to careful with the scanning, they look even better in your hand.

Colors are really nice. Their opacifying layer seems to work. This definitely looks like their best offering yet!

Just a quick question. Apologies if I'm missing something important but I'm fairly new to the SX-70....

If they take the battery out of the film pack, how will the camera fire / eject the photos? Where would the battery go?

impossible have 2 new prototype cameras , a pinhole and a viewfinder so the battery my be
a part of the camera, going forward!

which will mean that their batteryless film will not be campatible with polaroid cameras  ???

Alan, I think the writing's on the wall for 100 series I'm afraid. There's still a decent amount of out dated Pola stock available through evilBay and Fujifilm are still manufacturing a reduced set of their FP 100 series compatible films, but we've had too many rumours recently of Fujifilm getting out of peel apart all together for me to think it's going to be around much longer.

As to TIP making peel apart in that size....well, the word on that from TIP themselves has always been "No" (due to the fact that the factory that they bought didn't have the facilities to manufacture that type of film), but a conversation that Miles and I had with Alex from Mr Cad at Photografica in May left me wondering whether this was still the case. He was definitely hinting that we might see some peel apart production start up in the medium term from a quarter other than Fujifilm. Who knows?

Personally, I'm assuming the worst for now.

B***ards...!!  >:(

So, they make stupendously expensive, cruddy film from which the images vanish - but which will work with Polaroid cameras.  Then, when it looks like they've finally cracked the formula for colour, black and white and image permanence, they drop the battery from the film pack and start hawking a new range of cameras - thus finally rendering Polaroid SX-70 and 600 kit redundant forever.....?

No wonder they (and the Photographers' Gallery) are flogging SX-70's for £300 a pop while they can.  >:(

No doubt the new cameras will either look very much like the old Polaroid ones (in a trendy, hipsterish way) or be some rainbow coloured pig of a thing with the build quality of a Holga, leaking light like a lace curtain and have a lens like a boiled sweet. I doubt they'll be cheap, either...

oh thanks ed - now that is worrying - FFS  ???

LD - im not sure this is going to happen though
its all speculation at the mo'.

i didnt know that they were moving to removing
the battery from the packs.

I do know that they have a bettery return service
where they will give you a credit of €15 for 10 batteries.
so does that mean the batteries are hugely expensive
to produce? podssibly.

and im sure there would be mods for the polaroid
cameras for external battery packs available  :D

hopefully IP will make films both with and without batteries - I can't imagine they would kill all the existing polaroid cameras by stopping making packs containing batteries.

and as for peel apart, I fear the worst too, so I am stockpiling as much fuji peel apart, and any of the less expired polaroid film, as I can... same as all of it I guess, keep buying it from fuji and hope they keep making it...

Hi Alan.

At £20 a pack, that's £12 back for buying £200 of film. That equates to 6% (give or take). Postage for 10 used SX-70 packs will probably be a good few quid from the UK, so I doubt I'll be recycling the batteries.

To be honest, I'm not really into Polaroid. It's a nice distraction and something I'd dabble with if the film's stable and the price is right. It's an interesting suggestion but no way would I walk around with some off-board battery pack for an SX-70. The whole thing is either simple, cheap and convenient with decent quality or it's not for me.

However, my demands are insignificant as there are people on here and other websites who adore Polaroid / TiP instant photography and it just seems to be "one step forward and two steps back" all the time.

Personally, I always found that throwing out a perfectly good battery every 10 shots was a total waste.
Engineering wise, I'm thinking of a very slim battery (possibly rechargeable) that would fit under a slimmed-down film pack.
That way, there would be no need for a camera mod and a protruding battery pack.

Ive thought about this a little bit. My idea is similar to Francois'. Heres how i could see it being done really smart.

Impossible eventually would offer two versions of film pack. one with battery one without battery but a few extra frames in its place.

The camera would be able to take both battery pack films and extra exposure packs. The battery itself would be the exact same battery that comes in filmpacks now. Adding a smaller second compartment to the bottom of the camera for the battery pack to slide into. This way users could buy the camera with a "starter pack" that comes with the impossible film as we know it now. The buyer can opt to purchase another pack (say 10 frame pack for example purposes). When the user is done shooting with the "starter pack" they can dismantle the cartridge, remove the battery and insert it into the battery compartment in the camera, load up their 10 frame pack and continue until the battery dies.

This would be a smart way for impossible to keep making and fully using their batteries to help the environment and give users options to have 10 frame packs like traditional SX-70 films.

Thoughts?
