Hi all,

Today is the day (& we're very excited!) Shannon will be giving his talk at the B&H Event Space at 1PM today. The talk is free and he'll be doing a book signing afterwards. There are still seats available so if you're in the New York area just come on down. The Event Space is on the 2nd floor of B&H, at the corner of 9th Avenue & 34th Street in NYC.

And BTW, Shannon drove here from Texas just to speak and do his book signing.

Also coming up in the Event Space: I've been able to book a few iconic photographers to speak here over the next couple of months. On the schedule so far, Harry Benson on October 21, LIFE Magazine shooting, Bill Eppridge on October 14, and rock & roll photographer Henry Diltz on November 18. All three have got many iconic images to their credit, and I'm really excited to get them in here. All of the talks are FREE.

Fantastic!!

Ok, several comments:

1. It's awesome to really get to know the person behind the 'online buddy'!
2. I was blown away that he's never officially copyrighted his beautiful work!
3. 'Scanning negatives as positives (and inverting in PS) preserves highlight and shadow detail more than scanning negs as negs'?  Really? Can anyone verify this? Hmmm... should I change my workflow...

Hi Ann.

I got put onto this when reading some stuff about how to get the best scans out of VueScan. If I can manage to remember which website / article, I'll send you the link.

For about the last 6 months - maybe longer - I've been scanning to RAW file and inverting in PS CS3. I get very "flat" scans which I use PS "levels", "curves", "brightness / contrast" and "exposure" to achieve the result I want.

I'm not suggesting that I'm any sort of expert with these things. There's no doubt a lot better exponents of the art on here and other website. However, I won't be going back to the way I used to scan / process any-time soon. The only downside I can think of is that the scanned files can be a lot bigger than scanning as JPEGs. However, the detail available seems so much greater.

The negative for this shot was as flat as a pancake but I'm quite pleased with the result. (Mamiya 7, 43mm lens, I think, using Ilford XP2 Super) :

I've been a big fan of Shannon's work for a long time.

I enjoyed the talk very much as it's been something that I have been trying to drag my lazy ass to do for some years. It was timely as I was about to re-look at the whole thing!

The scanning of black & white as positives sounds interesting - I'll give it a go on my next scanning outing!

A great watch and like Ann said, always good to see the man behind the lens.

Oh, Paul - the image is popping!
