Summer Postcard Swap
« on: May 09, 2012, 05:48:16 PM »
Announcing a new postcard exchange, "The Summer Postcard Swap"

The rules are the same but if you're new here, this is how it goes:

1)   Sign up by May 31 if you want to play.
PM me your name and address with country and e-mail.
I need your e-mail address to contact you since the forum only allows two private messages an hour.  If you don't send me your e-mail, it will take a LOT longer to get your list of names.

2)   Names will be sorted on June 3.
Since we have Filmwasters from around the globe, I'll sort and divide the collected names into manageable groups (about 12 per group) to keep the cost of printing and postage at a manageable level.
Next I'll make a list of the sorted names and addresses and send them to everyone that signed up by June 3.

3)   Postcards should be sent out by June 30.
Cards can be printed in the darkroom or with inkjet printers on any paper (6x4 or 5x7 inches)
The important thing is the negative used to make the print must be a film capture.

The subject matter is entirely up to you and it's not a competition either, so have fun with it!

You can send the same print to everyone on your list, or you can make different prints for each person, it's up to you.

Details about the image such as location, camera and film type written on the back with a short message are appreciated but not required.

Stamp, address and then sign the card so we know who it's from and drop it in the mail and then wait for amazing cards to arrive in your post box.

This is always a lot of fun, so don't miss out.

Once again the important dates to remember are:

May 31= last day to sign up.
June 3=names sorted into groups and sent to participants.
June 30= deadline to send out cards.

Thanks!
astrobeck, your humble postcard wrangler.

I'm in this time ;D
The important thing is the negative used to make the print must be a film capture.

I've been playing around with Cyanotypes lately, the thing is I'm scanning 135 or 120 film to create an enlarged digital negative, does this still count?

As long as the original capture was with film, you're good.

So far we have 19 fabulous Filmwasters on the sign-up list for the exchange.

Just remember we're splitting the group to keep the cost down so everyone gets a chance to receive some amazing cards!!!!

I don't see a problem with your generous offer Diane.

If anyone else wants to send to the entire list, just let me know.

Just be cool with not getting a card from the 'extra' names that are not on your exchange list.

The list is still growing and will grow a bit more before May 31, the final day to add names.
Currently the name count is 22.

Hi Jack!  I have used a local printer at least 4 times and they do excellent work! I also tried MOO once and they were also very good, and within my budget!

Jack and others....

You can also have them printed at a one hour lab, then use adhesive to stick them to watercolor or some other art type paper to make cards.

Have fun!

I always drymount or spraymount some real photos (rubber glue can also be used). I find that for low volumes like that, it's worth it.
I checked out my local Staples last year and their postcard stock was so thin it probably wouldn't have survived through the mail.

I find that prints done with instant printers that use a dry process don't like being rubbed during shipping. A bit of abrasion makes some colors disappear in some spots and the image looks weird. Inkjet is fine as long as it doesn't get rained on. From what I've heard, my Fuji Crystal Archive prints survived pretty good last year.

I was thinking of ordering some postcards from moo.com - I've got business cards from them before and their quality has been pretty good. Minimum order is 20, but then I'm sure I can always find a use for some extra postcards. Has anybody used them for this?

Ordinal, I have used them a few times and the quality of the cards is great.

For those with an iphone you might take a look at hugmail or hugmail.com - I think that you can only use it from the UK, but, you can basically upload a photo which is then printed and posted for you. You can buy credits that include the postage to anywhere in the world very a VERY reasonable price. I have tetsted the service a few times to the UK and once to Crete and it seems to work fine.

Sending postcards from US to Canada or Mexico is $0.85. Maybe that's why the USPS is loosing tons of money? Canada Post... I hate Canada Post. ;D They have lost so many of my packages, it's unbelievable.

I'm thinking about doing a different card size for the domestic US as it could be up to 6 x 11 inch for $0.45 shipped... Maybe I should think more about producing a decent photo instead of logistics.  :'(
