stock agencies
« on: March 15, 2007, 12:40:09 AM »
Just wondering if any of you filmwasters submit your stuff to stock agencies? If so which ones are good and how much can one expect to make from such an endeavor? I am more interested in the arty farty variety and have been approached by a few but I am not sure how it works. I know a few people who use shutterstock BUT that seems such a mixed bag ( I have an account for work and although there is some good stuff, its mostly not so much....) anyways, any advice would be helpful :)

I was recently accepted at Trevillion Images based in London.  www.trevillion.com  It is a smaller agency focusing on fine art photography and represents several photographers whose work I admire (Joy Goldkind, and Andrew Sanderson to name a few).  I found out about the agency via the UK Black & White Photography magazine.  I really don't have much advise since this is a new adventure for me, and I will be interested in what others have to say about stock agencies.  Do submit as your work is wonderful!!

I've not as of yet, but have several names that Swanny gave me.
I'll look them up in my notes and send them your way.

Aline Smithson does stock---worth asking her also?

Let's just say I have an agency, but I sell nothing...in some ways, you really have to gear
your images to that world, which I haven't done...bright, shiny photos of families are always winners...
and you are competing with sites where photographers basically give away their images.

Aline-Thanks for the frank answer, that is good to know :) I have been accepted to a few and it seems like a lot of work, I just wanted to know if anyone makes a good return. If I do it I am going to have to scan in lots of negs at a really high resolution and I am not sure how much time I have to do this. I might submit  a few  just to see what happens but I have been doing some reading and it seems like the world is a changing.... :) I have an account with shutterstock for work ( as a subscriber, not a contributor) and at  $0.25 a download I think you would have to put in a LOT of images to even make their minimum.....
and as for bright shiny people photos, lets just say that might not be my thang :) hahahaha

I was recently accepted at Trevillion Images based in London.  www.trevillion.com

A book was published with pictures from Trevillion photographers  by Eddie Ephraums some time back.  It  might be worth checking to give you an idea of the type of work they publish  and the type of photographers they use.  Each photographer answers a number of questions about their craft and their attiitude and working style. The work is used in book publishing mainly and as you would expect the work is really creative.
