Camera PORN contained within!! Lock up your credit card!!
« on: March 23, 2012, 02:24:20 PM »
This is this weeks:

GRATUITOUS PORN!

One of my all time favourite cameras

Its key feature over its Nikon and Canon rivals at the time was - Built in TTL flash metering (oh God that feels so nice to type)

You can also take of the film back and attach a digital back if you want to soil your good name on this forum ;-)

The accompanying flash is one of my all time preferred top mount flashes, nothing gives more consistency in power delivery and "white" delivery than a Metz.

Oh well back to my FM2n's

I often feel the Leica R are often too much underrated. There's no cheaper way to get that Leica goodness than a nice Leica R.

I have a special publication they released to show what could be done in fashion photography with an R7. Simply gorgeous.

Oh yer, I'd love me a Lieca R.

I know a guy who shot F1 with an R system. The Canon guys would say "But there is no on track backup for your brand" the dude would be just like " and ?....... I don't need it, how much in field backup do you think a NG journo gets out in the boonies with their M cameras? This is why they use them."

He shot E6 while most the others shot C41

We were working the media centre for Kodak and got to see all the results come through.

The local hacks would have 2-4 compositions per roll

The really high level guys would have 18 compositions per roll

This guy would have 36 compositions per roll

I was so in awe of this dude.

I've recently traded an R3 Mot + 28mm/f2.8, 50mm/f2 and 90mm/f2 for an M4-P and a couple of other bits and bobs of M-series kit.

The R3 Mot is a nice camera (for a re-engineered Minolta). What set it aside, though, were the lenses. The 28mm was a Minolta design but Leica glass and I've never seen better. The 50mm and 90mm Summicrons were also superb. However, what I really wanted was an additional M body. The R-series kit was just too heavy as an accompaniment to an M6TTL, 28/35/50 and 90 set. R-series also depreciate faster than Greek government bonds.....so I decided to get what I could for the kit I had, given that  I hadn't paid top dollar for it in the first place - and it was mint.

The nicest R-series body, IMO, is the R6.2 which is light, reliable, sturdy and pretty well specified. The R8 and R9 have a better specification but I couldn't get them to sit happily in my hands (and I already have a DSLR).

If you really want R-series gear, now is the best time as there's some great kit out there for reasonable money compared to when new.

That's definitely true, though the R lens prices may already be going up.  Fortunately, the lesser prized lenses of R family are the real underrated jewels.  I own a few lenses but an early R 35/2 is my go-to for BW.  It renders tones that's unique and special to my eyes.   It's heavy, a bit awkward (on an R6),  and doesn't seem to be in as much demand.

BTW, 24/2.8 is the Minolta derived one.  28/2.8 is Leica all the way.
