Forum Handle Amnesty
« on: March 15, 2012, 12:57:11 AM »
This evening it suddenly struck me that my forum name was "ed.wenn" for some obscure reason and not "Ed Wenn" which is, after all, my real name. Now as forum handles go, "ed.wenn" is pretty transparent, but the more I looked at it, the more the full stop really bothered me....so I resolved to change it. Once I'd done just that, I thought others may want to do the same so I thought I'd jot down the process. I'll leave it here for a week or so and then more it to the Housekeeping board.

1. Click on your name in any forum post.
2. This takes you to the Profile Info page.
3. Under the Modify Profile heading click on Account Related Settings.
4. In the Name: This is the displayed name that people will see. section right at the top of the page you can change your name (not your username).
5. You then need to scroll to the bottom of the page, enter your password, click on Change profile and you're done.

Well, the fact that you're now "Andrea." isn't confusing at all. However, your post explaining what you've done and why is pretty confusing  ;D

I tried to change my name to 'themovementofairfromanareaofhighpressuretoanareaoflowpressure-y' but it has too many characters - can you sort it for me please, mods?

I've gone for 'Ian' instead but will probably be Mr Windy again before the day's out ;)

I changed my moniker to charles binns  - simple but effective. I thought about changing it to "long haired love god"  but that would be a lie.  I've got short hair.

I found some really swell ascii art of a camel that has to pee like right now, but I can't seem to change my name to that, so instead I decided my name was enough.

So, my real name is Jack Johnson, and depending on your age and nation of origin, I'm either a boxer or a Hawaiian musician. Either way, I'm effectively invisible on the Internet. Thus the "knapjack" handle I usually use everywhere.

Now I only get mistaken for a Swedish rucksack. Apparently Google thinks I need to work out.

What's wrong with Debbie?
Nothing dumb about it in my book...
Even rather lovely sounding through my French ears.

Now, if your name was Offer Shlomi, I'd be worried ;)

(Now all my excuses to the real Offer Shlomi. While I find your name incredibly weird, I think you'd find mine just as strange. Lets just call this being on even ground :) )

Here's a link to his wiki page, I'm sure you already know him ;)

thanks Phil, I actually want to upload a photo. Does it only work by grabbing an image elsewhere on the net? Or have I missed a step and I can upload directly from my hard drive? If I can't upload I guess I'll post my smiling face on the net and then come back for the link up through the interface here.

Jan

update: I've uploaded a shot to flickr with my image. I've cut and pasted the link into the url for the photo image here at filmwasters and nothing is happening... I'm missing something I'm sure. I pasted the link then hit the 'save changes'. The changes seem to have taken a second or two but when I come back to this page no avatar is visible.

Hi Jan. Here's how you do it:

  • Click on "Profile" from the menu list near the top of this page (right under the FW logo).
  • That should open your Profile page. In the "Modify Profile" section click on the "Forum Profile Information" option.
  • In amongst the various options available on the right side of your screen you should see the two that relate to changing your forum avatar.
  • And remember to then scroll right down to the bottom of the page and confirm your changes. This is the bit some people miss!

You can upload a photo, or point to one which is on the 'Net already.
